week 9 term 2 wednesday 16 june 2010 www.isleworth.school.nz kia ora koutou tama tu tama ora those who strive live fully three way conferences on 22 and 23 june we will be holding 3-way conferences which are also known as student-led conferences children will be talking with you about their learning telling you how they know they have learned something and what their next learning step will be they will also re-visit the goals set at the beginning of the year and evaluate whether or not these have been met some children may be ready to discuss and set new goals at this meeting teachers will also be informing you of your child s progress towards the national standards in maths reading and written language we strongly believe that children should be totally involved in the learning process and be able to discuss their learning which is why we involve them fully in these discussions however some of you may want to discuss other information without your child being present and we would encourage you to make a separate appointment with the class teacher for this purpose if you have not already made an appointment please send the form back or ring the school office teachers will also be contacting those families we haven t heard from yet these conferences are an important part of our reporting cycle and are also a way in which you can support your child s learning and show your pride in their achievements we really hope that all parents will be able to attend these conferences as the children really do enjoy sharing their learning with you and it gives them the message that learning is a partnership between home and school absences please let us know if your child is going to be away from or late to school please ring and leave a message as the winter illnesses are now in full swing it is taking karen up to an hour in the mornings to ring the families who have not let us know that a child is absent this means that other work in the office is not getting done and is especially difficult at the moment as judi is also away and karen is doing much of her work too please explain why your child is absent unexplained absences are considered as truancy when our roll is checked by the ministry of education our phone system works really well if you use the options before the recorded message cuts in you can press any of the following options firmly to get directly to where you want to go option 1 to record an absence option 2 to listen to messages and cancellations we will always try to put cancellations on here as soon as possible both for school events and sporting events which take place out of school time option 0 will take you straight to the office without listening to all the choices first we would appreciate it if you could especially use option 2 when you need to know if an event is still on as you can imagine answering numerous phone calls asking if an event is still on is very time consuming for our office staff with the threat of snow last week and possibly in the future the way the winter is shaping up it is timely to remind you that no decision can be made about closing school due to snow conditions until it is light enough to assess the situation please do not ring the school line option 2 until at least 7 45 am listen to the radio as we will endeavour to put a cancellation notice on newstalk zb as our first option and other radio stations if time allows closing the school has legal implications and we need to be very sure it is justified before we can do so we are required to have the school open a regulation number of days per year and if a closure is unjustified we would need to make that day up at the end of the year we therefore need to be very sure that children would not be able to attend school safely before the closure is made i realise that this is difficult if you need to make arrangements for children on the very rare occasions on which this happens children arriving early to school a reminder that children may arrive at school from 8.30 am and may go to their classrooms to keep warm we are concerned at the number of children arriving very early at school particularly some quite small children who are waiting outside the isleworth road gate this is not a safe option please ensure your children leave home to arrive at school by 8.30 if they are slightly early we ask that they come into the grounds and wait on the seat by the sandpit in the junior area this keeps them away from the road where they are vulnerable and allows us to keep an eye on them noho ora mai principal
