bolivar road school the address for success june 2012 from the principal s desk as the last month of the school year begins our focus continues to be teaching and learning with some special events intermingled all grade levels have been and will be taking part in field trips as well as participating in field day events and a school picnic fifth grade classes will celebrate the end of their mr merola three years at bolivar road school by participating in a send off party and a moving up celebration fourth and fifth grade chorus orchestra and band students performed in our spring concert on may 23 at the high school when we reflect on the events of the 2011-2012 school year we remember the continuing successes of our daily academic studies project c.a.r.e science fair music performances and school fair projects our student council accomplished many worthwhile projects school spirit day red ribbon week mismatch day to benefit office of the aging community day sullivan food cupboard food drive a fundraiser for the clearwater marine aquarium a school supplies drive to benefit the golisano children s hospital a toiletries drive for hunger and homeless awareness week a gently used toy drive for the salvation army and a bottle drive to help the lymphoma society our pta sponsored many successful events such as before and after school clubs book fairs p.a.m.p parents as math partners holiday crafts fundraisers family fun nights project c.a.r.e author visit and reading challenge 2012 thank you to our pta officers and committee chairpersons for your excellent leadership this year s officers were diane paul and margherita bertella co-presidents kelly erickson vice president amanda blaszkow secretary jackie penfield treasurer and diane paul membership the building planning team bpt facilitated several worthwhile projects including before and after school clubs volunteer recognition and around the world day we are grateful to all the teachers parents and community members who sponsored the 23 clubs that were offered this year thank you to the following bpt members for their dedication to school improvement parents cheri giancola traci mcintosh sharon schnauffer and melissa stanek teachers eric bonnier sandy athans brad williams and michelle wilson support staff kristine burleigh and community member mary lou champlin to all parents thank you for your ongoing support of not only these programs but especially your child s learning efforts children are more successful in life when the home-school partnership is positive cafeteria notice please remember to send your child with money each day or put money on your child s account to last for the remainder of the year any money remaining in your child s account will carry over to the next year no refunds are given if you have outstanding charges please pay them off asap thank you state testing schedule reminder­the following test will be administered in june grade 4 nys science test june 4 please encourage good attendance on this date it is important that your child is well rested eats a good breakfast and is on time thank you!

grade level news 3rd grade the end of the school year is approaching quickly june will be filled with many fun and exciting activities for the third graders to participate in some of these activities include a trip to cazenovia library around the world day super kids day and they will also be visited by the second graders from lake street we are very proud of our third graders and the many accomplishments that they have achieved throughout the year they have made great strides in both reading and writing in math concepts were learned to help them succeed in writing explanations of how word problems were solved additionally they have become more proficient in the speed and accuracy in which they solve math facts students have enjoyed using leveled readers to help them develop valuable reading skills we explored many different genres such as biographies folk tales fantasies plays and fictional and non-fictional stories students also enjoyed creating various types of writing pieces such as poems creative stories fairy tales autobiographies and letters third grade teachers and children have greatly appreciated and want to thank the many parents who have volunteered this year to help with various activities in the classrooms and throughout the school we hope that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer vacation we look forward to seeing each other again in the fall don t forget to continue to read read read this summer 4th grade it s not over `til it s over although we ve heard this before it s particularly true in fourth grade as we enter into our last month of the school year in addition to being an actionpacked month our last month is often considered by many to be our greatest here s why in science we will take the second part of the new york state science test in social studies we ll be continuing with our studies of immigration the erie canal and local history whether you re interested in l frank baum the chittenango landing canal boat museum chittenango pottery or chittenango falls the subjects we ll be learning about are sure to leave all students with a new admiration for our wonderful village in addition to our local history studies we will be visiting the chittenango landing canal boat museum this field trip will not soon be forgotten fasten your seat belt for a great time we will also enjoy a visit from our local historians who will present on gristmills and industry during chittenango s early days in math we ll be finishing our multiplication and division strategies in our unit packages and groups then we ll wrap up the year continuing to explore multiplication division and word problems in ela we ll continue to read a great selection of guided reading books as well as some wonderful trade books as we ll try to sneak in so much before the school year is over it s unquestionable that we ll have some great suggestions to get the students summer reading lists underway grade level news continued 5th grade june is an exciting month for the fifth grade as we close out our year and prepare for middle school in science class we continue our studies of wetlands and other ecosystems in math we will be tackling probability social studies likewise holds many adventures as we finish our studies of the united states and north america as writers students continue to apply and hone their skills in narratives poetry and essays please continue to encourage your child to read every night as the weather grows warmer we would like to remind students that they need appropriate clothes and shoes for recess outside on the playground special area classes students in art class have been working hard all year now as things come to an end we can look back at all the work students have accomplished fifth grade students explored many styles of art such as impressionism cubism and surrealism as always mr d s favorite project was the metallic relief sculpture students used a variety of materials to create a metal-looking relief sculpture based on their own self-interests fourth grade students learned about portrait drawing and figure sculpting this year they created 3-dimensional metal figure sculptures realistic and abstract portrait drawings lifesize musical figure murals and individual collage based band members it was exciting to see all of this displayed together at the art and ice cream social last may third grade students learned a lot about different artists while creating work based on their styles they explored mixed media collage watercolors and oil pastels mr d s favorites were the dogs and cats inspired by artist michel kecks great job to all the students for working hard and parents remember that artwork is still making its way back home ais/resource classes a well-deserved summer vacation will soon be here­time to engage in some favorite activities it is our hope that reading will be on the list research has shown that many students need to practice reading during the summer months or when they are away from school in order to maintain the growth that they made during the school year local libraries are excellent places to visit regularly during the summer months our local libraries often host summer events for children and our libraries can provide almost any title that your child would want to read a few suggestions to help encourage reading are as follows help children select books and other reading materials that interest them introduce audio books that can be listened to on trips make reading a family fun activity and read or listen to stories together there are also innumerable websites that can provide excellent titles for all ages one helpful site is www.teachersfirst.com this site provides a list of 100 best books with suggested ages have a great summer and happy reading with your family!

bolivar pta corner as we prepare to conclude another wonderful school year at bolivar road elementary the pta would like to thank all the parents families and community members along with the bre staff and chittenango businesses who enabled the success of our many events whether you voluntarily chaired an activity submitted box tops contributed to bakes sales or staff appreciation week scooped ice cream for the ice cream social dined at chicago uno grill bought your child s artwork masterpieces or flowers bulbs or cookie dough encouraged your child to read for the reading challenge or simply lent a helping hand in any number of ways our success is because of you people who share a passion for the ever changing adventure of education the goal of all of our events and fundraising efforts is to engage and stimulate students with fun and educational activities in and outside of the classroom field trips author visits family fun nights and creative new experiences like the brain show providing these special enrichment opportunities is part of our mission as the bre pta and a great way to invigorate a zeal for learning the whole community can be proud of thank you for all your support upcoming events at bolivar road elementary school around the world day ­ friday june 1 4 grade nys science test ­ monday june 4 lake street 2nd grade visits bolivar road ­ thurs june 7 5th gr family orientation cms ­ thurs june 14 at 6 pm 5th grade send off celebration ­ friday june 15 5th grade moving up ceremony chs ­ wed june 20 at 9:15 am early dismissal ­ wednesday june 20 at 11:15 am last day of school/early dis ­ thurs june 21 at 10:30 am th is your child missing a pair of boots or shoes a lunch box coat or sweatshirt we have many clothing items on our lost and found cart that have not been claimed there are just a few more weeks left of school to reclaim your belongings bolivar road student council ­ 2nd half the second half of student council is coming to a close the students did a remarkable job of promoting community service at bolivar road elementary their first job was to collect and count the money we raised for the clearwater marine aquarium the home of winter the dolphin then they helped out at bolivar road s annual drug free ­ way to be day they organized a school supplies drive for the school at golisano children s hospital they held a gently used toy drive to benefit the salvation army and finally they held a bottle drive to raise money for children and young adults with lymphoma overall the second half of student council at bolivar road was a wonderful success the students were caring and responsible and taught everyone the value of giving back to others thank you bolivar road student council a final note of gratitude to the 2011-2012 bolivar road elementary pta officers margherita bertella co-president diane paul co-president kelly erickson vice-president jackie penfield treasurer
