the honor has come yet another way to remember a hero for many years the effort had been made members of hancock plus many organizations lobbied now it is a reality the following was presented in 2000 and reflects the attention this man deserved national executive committee of the american legion indianapolis indiana october 18-19 2000 resolution no 22 the uss john w finn origin nc 2000 resolution no 232 washington submitted by internal affairs whereas the american legion is an organization of war veterans dedicated to preserve and perpetuate the memories and incidents of our associations in the great wars and whereas on december 7 1941 lieutenant john w finn then a chief aviation ordnance man on his own volition set up and manned a machine gun throughout the entire attack on the naval station at kaneohe hawaii returning fire to attacking japanese aircraft with telling effect and despite painful and numerous wounds from strafing fire continued to man his post until directly ordered to obtain medical attention and whereas lieutenant john w finn usn retired was awarded the congressional medal of honor for heroism and service above and beyond the call of duty by fleet admiral chester nimitz and whereas lieutenant john w finn is the last living survivor of fifteen medal of honor recipients for action at pearl harbor on december 7 1941 and whereas lieutenant john w finn s heroic actions are in fact fully documented in navy department historical records and whereas the american legion deems it fitting that a warship ship of the united states navy be named in honor of lieutenant john w finn when he is deceased in order to preserve and inspire present and future americans now therefore be it resolved by the national executive committee of the american legion in regular meeting assembled in indianapolis indiana october 18-19 2000 that the american legion petition the secretary of the navy to name a u.s naval vessel for medal of honor recipient lieutenant john w finn usn retired who was honored for heroism and service above and beyond the call of duty at pearl harbor on december 7 1941 on february 15 2012 navy secretary ray mabus announced that the next arleigh burke class guided-missile destroyer will be named the uss john finn ddg-113 mabus wanted to ensure john finn s service and sacrifice would be known by today s sailors and marines and honored for several decades to come by a new generation of americans and people from around the world who will come in contact with this fine ship the contract to build her was awarded to ingalls shipbuilding of pascagoula mississippi on june 15 2011 ingalls has been a subsidiary of northrop grumman ship systems since april 2001 prior to the award ingalls had constructed 28 arleigh burk class destroyers john finn will be the 63rd vessel in the arleigh burke class of destroyers the first of which uss arleigh burk was commissioned in july 1991 with 75 ships planned to be built in total the class has the longest production run for any u.s navy surface combatant as an arleigh burke-class ship john finn s roles include anti-aircraft antisubmarine and anti-surface warfare as well as strike operations during it long production run the class was built in three flights flight i ddg-51ddg-71 flight ii ddg-72ddg-78 and flight iia ddg-79 john finn will be a flight iia ship and as such will feature several improvements in terms of ballistic missile defense an embarked air wing two sh-60f light airborne multi-purpose systems helicopters and the inclusion of minedetecting ability this is also the first ship class in the u.s navy to include anti-nbc nuclear biological and chemical warfare protection this is truly a great honor for john said joe brunner the chairman of the annual veteran s day parade in san diego i just wish he had lived to see it 3

200 volunteers needed during the 2012 reunion a request for volunteers was posted of course we all have definite feelings about responding to these type of requests based on our past service experience well this time it s a good idea here s why for a number of years some members have asked about getting the hannah news via email rather than receiving a paper copy there have been good arguments for this and good arguments against this everyone has a preference please understand that we are not advocating the elimination of printing the hannah news also know that the hannah news is currently being delivered to our international members other navy related organizations interested in hancock and addresses where the us postal service has delivery problems yes this does happen for the past 3 years those who got our newsletter electronically have been pleased the added benefits of color pictures look better in color one click to activate hyperlinks and a file you can store on your computer have been well received by this limited electronic distribution group electronic delivery also means the hannah news gets to you sooner than the us postal service days if not a week earlier how does one `volunteer send an email to wayne erven our membership chairman oldsalt2@comcast.net with the subject line i want to volunteer this serves two purposes first wayne will update the email we have on file for you and second he will send you a verification email that you are on the list of volunteers if you don t receive a verification email from wayne it means he didn t receive your email remember only `current and lifetime members are eligible if your membership has or is about to expire submit your renewal to be eligible be sure to check your expiration date above your name in the address on 1st page remember our web site www.usshancockassociation.org and the facebook page http www.facebook.com/groups/128667737214096 are mediums used to exchange and share information with shipmates and friends of hancock photo credits for this issue there are many photographers who have submitted pictures for this issue they include larry olga jones tim cathy mullen max pate john hunter and countless others many pictures are also posted on the above mentioned facebook page facebook is an excellent source of photos ready to frame or to be used to blackmail shipmates i urge you to explore the many excellent submissions from those who attended the 2012 hancock reunion in chicago if you haven t done so already post your photos for all to see dan 6

yet another honor on march 26 2012 i had the pleasure to attend the ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony for the john w finn hall at naval base coronado the hall is part of the navy s homeport ashore initiative which is for single sailors to stay when their ship is in port no more living on the ship while in port imagine that upon entering the room there is a kitchenette with a microwave small stove and a stacked washer and dryer the bathroom also has a full tub so no more showers if you so please the small hallway branches out to two locked doors in each room are two beds and closets other amenities include a flat screen tv iron and ironing board and of course ac community centers are located on every floor with a terrace on the 7 floor overlooking a nice view of the ocean submitted by john hunter reflections on 2012 chicago what a fantastic gathering those in attendance really enjoyed themselves i saw shipmates i didn t expect to see shipmates who always attend shipmates that made chicago their first reunion and friends of shipmates and our association we are fortunate to have such terrific people in our association if you weren t there you missed it a chance to see the us navy today reflected in the great lakes recruit training center there were certainly some surprises one retired chief with our group summed up his reaction i worked hard to gain the privilege to wear khaki and now an e-2 gets the uniform out of boot camp yes uniforms were a topic of conversation dominated mostly by the `camo type our banquet guest speaker was tremendous needless to say his proud father has every right to be those who have served on us navy carriers are a breed apart very special people in a conversation with tom boring i stated i had relatives in chicago tom corrected me you have relatives everywhere truer words have never been said we are part of a large hancock family located in many towns cities and countries brothers shipmates all dan 7
