the day would come the owners of the beach fairway golf range golf practice facility at victoria park and gerrard are hoping for an 11th hour solution after the city served notice that their lease would not be renewed after oct 31 this year owners kim holman and brian jacobsen set up shop on the land on the south side of the train tracks just east of victoria park avenue in the spring of 1999 and opened for business in august of that same year holman pointed out that the facility is the only one of its kind that is readily accessible by transit in the southern part of the city we re the last true green grass golf facility south of the 401 she said when holman and jacobsen signed a 10-year lease in 1999 they knew that the city would want to develop the land at some point in the future what they didn t necessarily expect was how much their customers who travel from parkdale downtown the beach and west scarborough to use the facility would come to rely on the range while it s no surprise to us that the city has desires to develop this land because we understand that it is valuable land the real problem is that we have over 60,000 visits each year and those people don t have a viable option to go to once this facility is closed said holman by no means did we ever think that this would be a forever program among those 60,000 visits in 2011 were users from 65 groups that get discounted rates including schools community centres day camps for kids variety village ontario visually impaired golfers and mental health groups the range employs seven adults and last summer employed 14 students and holman and jacobsen have made $25,000 in charitable donations on behalf of the range cont d on page 2 feathered friends six storeys approved by community council by jon muldoon despite months of growing opposition to the six storey condo proposal for 19601962 queen st e currently the home of a lick s restaurant toronto and east york community council voted unanimously on may 15 to allow the project to go ahead dozens of beach residents attended the community council meeting to voice their concerns about the project and the planning process itself along with a small handful of supporters of the condo development but at the end of a long day of presentations the project was approved and sent to full city council for a final vote in early june jason self a member of the friends of queen street residents organization and one of the 30-plus deputants at the community council hearing said many beach residents are feeling ignored by council and frustrated with inconsistencies in the whole planning process we feel that we ve been shut out of this process from the very beginning this was pre-determined he said so many of the issues that we ve raised still haven t been addressed and yet this has been rubber-stamped self and many other residents have been concerned about the precedent the new building will set at four or more metres taller than the current tallest residential building along queen street there were concerns raised in deputations about density about traffic issues and resultant ttc problems about the modern downtown design of the building about the lack of community consultation throughout the process and about inconsistency in applying various zoning by-laws and planning tools councillor mary-margaret mcmahon said there s no point to fighting the building that has been approved to do so at the ontario municipal board omb could result in an even taller building being approved she said beach residents are understandably upset and are passionate about retaining the small-town feel of the neighbourhood in a city seemingly overrun by condo development we re basically one of the only wards that s been left untouched she said mcmahon said she s focusing her energy towards a `visioning study that will take place over the summer and early fall with a goal of solidifying planning rules for queen street east i think we all want to work together to create the best plan for queen street she said self said the friends of queen street the greater beach neighbourhood association and other local groups all plan to be heavily involved in the visioning study all the residents groups that we work with are in agreement that we want to make damn sure that this isn t just a lipservice process he said we definitely plan to hold the planning and city staff accountable to make sure that residents concerns are addressed and although mcmahon is ready to move on with plans for the future self said the story of 1960-1962 queen st e is not over yet whether it s friends of queen or one of the other organizations we re still deciding but it s probably inevitable that someone s going to go to the omb he said encourage her neighbours to patronize businesses in her neighbourhood judging by the initial reaction from area residents kate tennier is not alone in wanting to support and promote local business in the gerrard and woodbine area i called this meeting and i thought 10 people were going to show up and 60 did she said the gerrard woodbine neighbourhood association is launching the i m a local initiative on june 9 with a neighbourhood celebration the project entails area residents purchasing a $20 membership card which entitles them to anything from discounts to special treatment at local businesses between bowmore in the west and devon in the east funds generated by card sales will be funnelled back into the community in the form of street beautification projects and other local improvement ideas tennier who has lived in the area for 16 years described the card as almost like a share in the neighbourhood she said she had been seeing new business come into the area and wanted to do her part to support it with all the work being done by grassroots organizations in the east end such as the gerrard east community association and the danforth east community association she thought the time was right to start something in her own local area it s a wonderful little almost hidden gem instead of complaining or saying we need to bring some amazing big thing in here and change the neighbourhood i m saying we have resources right here i just think they re underused she said there are a total of 38 businesses on the stretch of gerrard and tennier is hoping to get all of them involved the support from the community has been strong since the first meeting as well she said there seems to be a really overwhelmingly positive response to this the i m a local launch on obedience training class or private new classes starting every month call for scheduling and pricing soccer school caught up in politics by phil lameira it all appeared to be going well and the community would see a top soccer academy affiliated with the english premiership come to woodbine beach then it seems politics got in the way boardwalk place owner george foulidis and the restaurant s general manager of sales david valente were first contacted by premiership academy a british organization that sets up soccer camps around the globe in january the plan was to bring the premier league-affiliated group to woodbine beach where a temporary soccer pitch would be built from june 20 to july 7 the soccer camp was to coincide with the euro 2012 tournament tournaments were also planned for the venue with up to 60 teams from ontario quebec and united kingdom to attend the plan was to have their soccer program exposed to the community the gta and in fact to ontario said valente according to drawings in the official proposal an artificial turf field would be put in place southeast of the bathing station three giant screens would also be erected for the beach crowds to watch euro 2012 matches one of the screens would face south for the view of bathers and even boaters stands for the venue would be five rows high and would accommodate approximately 1,500 people they would also be open to the public on canada day to watch the fireworks display the planning of the site map was done with the parks department said valente who claims the parks department was initially on board with the idea and said he received constant positive feedback from them we didn t unilaterally design this we have had site visits and consultations [with parks said foulidis the proposal was first presented to the city of toronto parks and recreation on april 10 after a series of `backand-forth emails an official meeting took place on april 30 in the week beginning may 7 valente was informed by city officials that the plans were declined because they went against a city policy which was not specified to him ann ulusoy director management services at parks forestry and recreation at the city of toronto says the reason the event and venue construction is not permitted is because it does not conform with the intent of the use of park land this is a public beach and putting the turf on the public beach would take space and exclude public use of the beach said ulusoy june and canada day is a high-demand period also since premiership academy operates on a for-profit basis ulusoy says it falls outside of the city s scope of special event permitting foulidis insists there is no policy in place and that the city is making decisions based on politics and tensions generated over a recent incident that had foulidis try to recoup development fees for the addition to his restaurant officials of the premiership academy in england were told by the city that the event could take place just not in this location said foulidis ulusoy says the event in its current for-profit structure cannot take place on any city-owned property it is still for-profit and even if the premiership academy changed its event to not-for-profit where they wouldn t be charging kids we would still be having a hard time finding a soccer field suitable for them in a different part of the city all our sports fields permits are out and all the fields are booked said ulusoy premiership academy s gary o hare said in an email to beach metro news that the academy has invested significant time man hours sponsorship commitment staff logistics flights hotel bookings for staff [and 500 reserved hotel rooms for teams he said that the premiership academy is at the mercy of key stake holders in a community and it must work with all those involved the city [of toronto has offered to work with us on other venues and have simply expressed a concern that the event may not be best suited to that location and we have to respect that decision he wrote as of may 22 the premiership academy website continues to list the june 20 event in toronto and is accepting registrations cont d on page 34 6 beach metro news tuesday may 29 2012 celebrating 40 years serving the beach in my opinion looking past lick s to a new era of community input it s been a long and difficult haul but on may 15 the toronto east york community council voted unanimously in favour of approving the development application at 196062 queen east community residents were on hand at city hall to share their frustration with the planning and consultation process a frustration all members of the community council share and one which i hope to address with the upcoming visioning study the plan is to start on the afternoon of june 16 pending confirmation with our facilitation team the whole community will be invited to provide input at several workshops about what makes the beach distinct and also about what kind of development and design people can live with if you are unable to attend the first session there will be more public meetings and a survey during the summer months we will also be engaging with local community and service groups in smaller sessions there will be ample opportunity to share your creative ideas before we have it wrapped up and ratified by city council before year end at the same may 15 community council session we also passed a motion that asks the planning department to pause all future rezoning applications on queen until our visioning study is completed this is the next best thing to an interim control bylaw and acknowledges the need to take some time to breathe and think through the shape of future queen street east mary-margaret mcmahon ward 32 councillor development and intensification looking from the outside it seems almost impossible that a six storey condo development could provoke this kind of interest and outpouring but as you know beachers are passionate about our community for most the charm of this neighbourhood is the small town feel its front porch culture and a tree-lined walk down to the lake and so it s hard for us to give up on this special character and welcome new buildings that seem more downtown than the beach but we also understand that we live in a city and development is coming 145 condo buildings are going up across the city right now 100,000 people are arriving here each year and we ve all got to live somewhere preferably not in prime farmland and it turns out many of the buyers of these condos already live in the beach they just want to downsize and age in place to live near the neighbours and networks they ve nurtured over decades so there s a lot of good reasons to add housing in the beach the problem is how to do it properly and that s where it gets tricky first i want to set a few things straight the building proposed at 1960 queen east cannot be stopped there is simply no planning tool available to us to prevent the developers from building a six storey condo the precedent has already been set and the mid-rise guidelines are firmly in place on queen st east the official plan prevails and the guidelines are there to protect queen street from further height and density not inflict it as the local councillor voting no on this application was not an option without risking an expensive and dubious legal battle with the omb i simply refused to roll the dice on this neighbourhood and risk getting an even bigger building so this is the best we can do and relative to the rest of the city this is not a bad building cont d on page 35 beach metro community news published by ward 9 community news inc is a non-profit non-partisan community newspaper founded in 1972 and published 23 times a 15 2012 toronto and east york community council teycc meeting as the last to speak i said a few words in the hope of persuading the council to oppose the current design for 1960-1962 queen street east i suggested to the developer shelley fenton of reserve properties that it was not too late to redesign a building that would be appropriate for queen street the new building could be precedent setting perhaps award winning and he would be embraced by the community to develop the next project hopefully not another sterile glass building with the inevitable lack of interesting retail at street level but something special to fit the beach community a pipedream perhaps but without vision and creativity what are we left with the council voted unanimously in favour of allowing the re-zoning to proceed after all the impassioned pleas from community residents we were treated to a lecture from councillors about how lucky we are to have this condo development in the beach how they wished they could have such a great building in their wards although voting along with the rest of the council adam vaughan councillor for ward 20 trinity-spadina was most sympathetic to beach residents and stated succinctly that the building would stick out like a sore thumb the approved plan will now go to full city council on june 5 or 6 for final approval and with the endorsement of teycc and the city planning department it is certain that council will not reject their recommendation the re-zoning application was approved with a three foot step-back above the third floor and some other small changes but at the end of the day it is a six-storey glass tower that does not fit with the area it is a sad day for the beach and for the city when council is obliged to approve a building in which almost all the units were pre-sold before the developer had planning approval for his re-zoning among the councillors reasons to approve were the ontario municipal board will probably approve an even higher building how fast the city is growing and everyone needs somewhere to live it was a shameful display of democracy not working with an overwhelming majority of residents opposed to the six storey development jane jacobs we need you sharman wilson violet avenue it s hard to fathom for some dog owners but it s true so as responsible dog owners we must do our part to make sure our beach is accessible to everyone we expect visitors to the beach to follow beach etiquette so as dog owners turn the sand over to summer users it s equally important that dog owners continue to follow dog etiquette i reminded dog owners that you must have your dog on leash and that you need to be diligent in watching your dog at all times i continue to hear complaints from dog owners and non-dog owners that there are dogs running loose outside the dedicated off-leash parks i received a call last week from a dog owner who was attacked by a loose dog as she walked her own dog the owner of the attacking dog went on to say something like you re not from the beach are you this was totally unacceptable behaviour the beach is a public asset and is open to everyone we fought hard to get access to the beach during the winter months it was a tough fight but in the end we came up with a compromise since then we have worked closely with parks staff and the general public to ensure our beaches are maintained and accessible we want to keep it that way don t forget a new off-leash fence was built at the foot of leuty avenue for dogs to roam freely all it takes is one accident to change our beagle rescue founded by beach metro news pet of the month columnist marna gale around beach metro s 11 food provides an introduction to the stars by melinda drake when mike flaherty was 10 years old and helping his grandfather and uncles in the family-owned meca tavern little did he imagine he would one day be making shepherd s pie for keith richards or packing sandwich lunches for ken thomson today flaherty 45 is a chef at the air canada centre s platinum club but in the intervening years he has practically as bob dylan would put it dined with kings or at least made dinner for some rock and roll royalty a smattering of film stars and a few heads of state he s been dubbed by one co-worker as the chef beyond the velvet rope flaherty got his first taste for cooking when he worked alongside his grandfather and uncles george and alec in the meca tavern at the corner of queen street east and coxwell avenue they had me in there working on saturdays working in the kitchen said flaherty at a very early age i learned how to compromise i had to learn how to do things three different ways depending who was there he credits his grandfather with teaching him all the recipes he knows he was my walking cookbook until the day he died said flaherty during his high school years he graduated from the meca kitchen to the arcadian court in the downtown simpson s store here he had his first brush with fame newspaper magnate ken thomson ate lunch there regularly and flaherty would sometimes make and pack sandwiches in plastic containers for him flaherty moved back to the beach and began an apprenticeship at the toronto hunt club a venue he said was not only a great place to learn but also where he was one of the cooks who made 450 meals in one day for the economic summit in the late 1980s diners included brian mulroney u.s president ronald reagan and u.k prime minister margaret thatcher at one point during the dinner maggie thatcher just got up and decided to walk into the kitchen just to see what was going on said flaherty her handlers were all beside themselves saying what are you doing she came over and chatted with us i thought that was really nice photo submitted mike flaherty living the canadian dream with lord stanley s cup flaherty has brushed up with the famous many times in his career as a chef a brief stint in law took him out of the kitchen for a short while but after taking a few law courses he decided this really isn t me his next move was to answer an ad for film and concert catering one of the people doing the hiring turned out to be an old friend he said i know you want to work in the kitchens here but how would you like to go across north america with u2 flaherty recalls he went home and ran the proposal by his girlfriend julie the first thing out of her mouth was i think you should go because if you don t you ll be regretting it for the rest of your life and that s when i said that s the woman i m going to spend the rest of my life with in april of 1997 he went on tour with the band for three and a half months in september he went out again this time with the rolling stones one memorable event took place right here in the city when the stones minus mick jagger who was sidelined with laryngitis decided to rehearse in a space in the eglinton and warden neighbourhood it was keith charlie ron wood and a couple of the backup singers and it was impromptu just them a few back line guys and jeff another cook and myself cooking said flaherty flaherty has also catered on film locations and one of his favourite recollections was working on a set with james earl jones he s the nicest man i ve ever met he said i remember knocking on his trailer door and all i heard was come in and i m like oh my god it s darth vader flaherty no longer goes out on the road but he is still involved along with his chef job at the acc he is also a catering and production runner for live nation making sure bands get where they have to go on time and buying and sourcing all the food he s been sent out to buy 20 dozen roses the petals of which were subsequently scattered on a dressing room floor and to deliver a three-tier wedding cake to a dinner the following day he accomplished both flaherty is busy at home too with julie and their young daughter you life is made up of moments he mused it s what you do with those both provincial and municipal governments that meet some basic dental needs for those on social assistance and with disabilities however there are also many low income ontario families who unfortunately fall through this social safety net as a result there is a wide disparity in the level of oral health among the citizens of this province hopefully as ontario s economic outlook improves there will be the collective political will to improve the level of dental health for all ontarians.

swimming together nor could over quickly to being able to plan family activities that appeal i read them bedtime stories together i only had two years to both children the main benefit though the one i heard when the two girls were at the same elementary school and it over and over was that youngsters the same age provide was very tough on both of them when the older one headed each other with a built-in playmate which makes life easier out to university on the other hand i got to share bedtime for mom and dad provides more fun for the kids and might stories with my children for many many years and just when even lead to a strong life-long sibling relationship i can certhose memories of holding and nurturing a beautiful pudgy tainly attest to the veracity of this last point as i have witlittle baby were beginning to be old memories we got to do it nessed the very strong relationship between my husband and all over again with the second one and what a joy it has been his twin brother both times but do children need to be close in age to develop a strong families come in all shapes and sizes these days and all can bond surely not i can t imagine two children loving each oth be highly workable models often fate will deal us a hand we er more or enjoying each other s company more despite my did not expect but if you are one of the lucky ones who has the daughters eight-year age gap the strength of the relationship opportunity to plan your family consider the spaced-out modstems from the chemistry between the two children they re a el an option that can work beautifully for everyone involved friends and families of jenny houghton gathered at the balmy beach club in early may to celebrate at the 10th annual jenny s beach party the event grew from an neighbourhood it s the largest outdoor dog festival in north america the perfect venue for the best four-legged fugitives dog biscuits can buy to pull off the perfect crime of compassion paws up to our dogfather k9 rescue me since its start in 2004 this non-profit has been committed to representing reputable dog rescue groups across ontario there are close to 30 member rescue groups working under its umbrella raising awareness and funds for abandoned dogs in need of loving homes as captain renault said in casablanca round up the usual suspects first in the line-up is riley a.k.a `babyface of southern ontario animal rescue soar he s a backyard-bred rottweiler with a face that could rob you blind literally riley `babyface 9-year-old riley was rescued in december his people had ignored the glaucoma invading his eyes neglecting to provide even the most minimal care of daily eye drops soar s veterinarian says riley has essentially suffered a migraine for the last 6 years sadly one eye is kaput but there s hope to save the other with $5,000 of surgery riley is worth all that and a bag of toys he likes to play kissyface with his eye doctor during checkups when his mouth isn t already occupied with a toy or the tail of his pintsized pomeranian playmate he met in the waiting room next up is wyatt aka `the goof but don t be fooled by his alias he understands the concept of retrieving just not as it applies to him bosses don t have to wyatt `the goof play by the rules and he deserves to be boss at four years old this handsome golden retriever has had a ruff life battling epilepsy his people gave up on him after too many grand mal seizures but the golden folks at golden rescue had ymca we build strong kids strong families strong communities w no intention of giving up on wyatt together with their vet they sorted out the proper dosage of medication to help control his seizures he s living up to his nickname now finally being the goofy golden he was meant to be taking but not always giving back that squeaky ball or your heart one can t pull off a heist without an international dog of mystery whose last mission was kuwait meet brownie a 3 year old boxer in name only brownie `mr red he was found left for dead in the desert after some monsters had used him for dog fighting brownie may be a fighter but not that kind of fighter taken in by animal paws of kuwait he put up his dukes only to fight for his survival a volunteer at the kuwait shelter said brownie is one of the greatest dogs i ve ever met our friends at boxer rescue ontario couldn t agree more on may 11 they welcomed brownie to canada with open arms and a special donation from rens pet supply of oakville had he accepted a mission in hawaii he would have scored the traditional lei upon arrival when he touched down at pearson he scored even better a bright red leash collar and an i love canada bandana to complete the patriotic look brownie s nickname is mr red a good heist also requires a veteran of velocity for fleeing the scene goodman formerly known as `a few good men retired from his professional greyhound racing career last july after 55 races that cagoodman `lefty reer came with a cost his racing days were over but so it seemed were his walking days soon after turning his back on the track goodman became lame his rescuers at greyhounds in need of adoption feared the worst a soft tissue or bone injury left undetected to their relief goodman was diagnosed with corns thanks to a daily application of ointment on his tender tootsies and a protective boot for his rear left paw goodman is back on his feet we call him lefty now just like ocean s eleven our woofstock seven includes a pretty lady sunny doesn t need a nickname she s a shining star brightening every day for her entourage at boston terrier rescue canada since her transfer from a windsor shelter over a year ago you d think her chronic skin issues would make her as grumpy as a thunderstorm sounds but not a chance little miss sunshine is way too happy in her permanent foster home to cry over life s raindrops after all that s how rainbows are made brownie isn t the only interlittle miss sunshine national spy in on the heist of the year introducing calvin aka `chiweenie from taiwan calvin is a spicy combination of dachshund and chihuahua in the care of canadian dachshund rescue cdr each year cdr finds space to rescue a handful of purebred and mixed dachshunds from taiwan given the dire situation for stray dogs there calvin had a broken femur which calvin `chiweenie needed immediate attention with the help of cdr s partner group in taiwan calvin came to canada for his second chance thanks to a fabulous foster mom and her patient s pawsitive attitude calvin has made a full recovery now all he needs is for you to adopt him so he can apply for his canadian citizenship last but not least we need a bully to lead this brat pack mayor aka `muscles is just the hire to inspire this pitbull-type dog has been brushing up on his leadership skills by taking a few courses in his spare time he s dabbled in mayor `muscles dock-diving rally and agility but his favourite is weight-pulling despite his strength mayor has no intention of bullying anybody after a day of weight-pulling our mr mayor would much rather curl up into a small but muscular ball next to you on the couch that s what a real bully is to our friends at bullies in need so there s a peek at just a few of the top dogs in charge of the biggest heist of the summer i don t expect they ll do any time for this kind of crime they plan to steal your hearts so you ll keep saving theirs the k9 rescue me walkathon kicks off at 11:00am on sunday june 10th in the rescue me village at woofstock
