senior school news year13morningtea the year has got off to a very positive start with a good feel amongst the students in the senior school and the year 13 group in particular in recognition of the ongoing efforts that this year group displays the staff held a morning tea as a means of showing their appreciation for the mature and determined approach they have adopted in their time in the college the leadership they demonstrate as a group is top rate and it was very appropriate that this morning tea followed the visit of the rugby world cup where neil sorensen nzrfu spoke to the boys about how important leadership was in the all black culture indicating that it was not enough to just be a top rugby player in order to be a part of their environment they need to be a `good person as well it has been tremendously encouraging to see this new initiative get under way this year there is a growing body of evidence of the effectiveness of peer learning support and so to have a system developing in the college is heartening and it is interesting to note that the universities in nz are adopting these peer leader programs in support of the learning in their institutions about twenty six year 13 students have voluntarily set aside one of their study lessons during their week to be available for tutoring supporting and leading younger students in the college with their learning they will sit alongside these students in one of their classes each week and `trouble shoot their difficulties allowing the students to more quickly take their next learning steps already there are nearly ten students actively tutoring others in this way and as we get further in to the year it is expected this will grow further if as a parent you feel that your son is having particular difficulties in an area of study and would benefit from this assistance then please feel free to contact me mrs mayes or mr allen academictutorsyear13 progressreports these will be with you shortly if not included in this mail out this will give you a good indication as to how your son has started this important academic year in ncea there is little doubt that the majority of students at the college have an abundance of grades in the 3 s 4 s and 5 s if you son has grades lower than this it would be recommended to have a discussion with them about these and if necessary get in touch with his teacher his dean or myself to discuss these it is very encouraging to see the quality of the vast majority of these reports mrrossbarry assistantrectorseniorschool stuart curran will represent lindisfarne college at the 2012 biology olympiad as one of a final 20 students to take part at auckland and waikato universities scholarship winners 2011 the2011scholarshipresultssaw7studentsearnatotalof 8subjectscholarships,onewithoutstanding last s year runner up to dux connor ennis has won through to the final 20 who will compete in the nz international chemistry olympiad in auckland jontybirrellcompetingatohakuneinthe seniormensmx2class.theschoolhasfour ridersenteredattheupcomingwestern heightshighschoolsmxtournamentonthe 30thmarch.jamiebull15-18yrs250cc lochiebirrell13-14yrs125cc dougal morice13-16yrs85ccandjontybirrell1518yrs250cc michel gaveau michael lo connor ennis jason hursthouse best performance connor ennis french statistics modelling calculus economics connor ennis james strickland sam wallace george nelson chemistry outstanding statistics modelling media studies economics 2 scholarships attained and one chemistry with outstanding 4

prefects column the year of 2012 is going to be a positive one for lindisfarne college a team of 16 prefects have been chosen to lead the student body of the school this team has a very different range of personalities and skills displayed by the members in it crossing all 4 cornerstones of the school and exceeding successes in many areas however having large success as an individual is not what makes a good leader/prefect all members of the 2012 prefects know and display many attributes that are essential in leadership respect loyalty fairness creativeness and considering everyone s opinions are just a few in their own specific roles each prefect has their own important responsibilities allowing the unique styles of each prefects leadership to shine whether this be seen from the head and deputy head of each house or the leaders of kapa haka service and arts just to name a few the opportunities for the prefects to thrive in an environment that holds a variety of new challenges cameron pease andrew mcnair that guarantee to be beneficial for us is huge with the two big events of athletics and swimming sports having been a huge success along with the college gala 2012 is shaping up to be a very successful year for the college at these events it was obvious to all that spirit and camaraderie were high among the students the creativeness of costumes and chants to support the separate house added to the competitive atmosphere on the day however the smooth running of these days was largely due to the behind the scenes work of prefects matt taylor sports prefect and heads and deputy heads of houses liam murphy hamish boult sam wake jahmayne robin sam godwin george collin and tim cadwallader hendrick mufana they all had very busy weeks leading up to swimming sports and athletics with other large college events coming up on the calendar our 2012 team of prefects continues to grow stronger as a group and are learning more about how to handle individual responsibilities as each of us begin to mould into our roles for the year we continue to look forward to the challenges that we are to face in the year ahead jahmayne robin senior relay cameronpease headprefect liam murphy breaking the javelin record 5 2012 prefects

from the chaplain i have been reflecting in chapel services over recent weeks on the importance of experiencing the presence of god in our lives the reality is religion was never meant to be formally studied it was meant to be experienced and it is only through experience that religion becomes meaningful and relevant to us so in essence one s religion one s faith is something that should be lived out in our daily lives service is one avenue by which this can happen at year 10 the year when most of our students turn 14 students are encouraged to become involved in the duke of edinburgh s hillary award programme where service is one aspect that is emphasised the programme has three levels bronze silver and gold so at bronze level what is involved silver and gold awards it is also important for students to take ownership of their involvement and responsibility for seeing that they fulfil the requirements of the respective levels support from parents in this is always greatly appreciated service is an integral part of what we do as a school and is a way of giving practical expression to the faith we see as being important some comments have been made that we do not indicate where each term s sunday chapel offerings are being directed in our second sunday chapel this term i focussed on our support of children in cambodia and some of the very simple everyday commodities they lack toothbrushes being one example mrs glen sutherland spoke of her recent visit to cambodia and the plight of young folk there term one s offering is to go in support of these children and the purchasing of toothbrushes once we have completed our chapels i intend to write to companies requesting they match what we have raised thus ensuring that what we send across makes a meaningful and lasting impact thesectionsare service choose one form of service and train and give practical service to others for example community service child care life saving care for animals there are heaps of options to choose from skill choose a hobby a topic to study or some other leisure interest follow it through regularly for the time listed and improve your skill or knowledge examples photography computing wood turning billiards and snooker aquarium keeping again there are heaps to choose from physical recreation take up a physical activity for the time listed and reach a given standard or show improvement examples rugby netball swimming aerobics orienteering there are many to choose from adventurous journey after basic training including practice journeys plan and carry out a venture that includes camping expedition undertake a journey with a purpose in wild country on foot exploration complete an approved study or other activity in wild or open country including at least 10 hours journeying other adventurous project complete some other adventurous project of an equally or more demanding nature in each case there should be an average number of hours planned activity each day comparable ventures on horseback or by cycle boat or canoe are also acceptable for the service skills and physical recreation sections two must be carried out for 3 month duration and one for six months as they move up to silver and gold the requirements become greater the real strength with the programme is that it is internationally recognised at any level and especially gold to date i have been encouraged at the number of year 10 students signing up for bronze the challenge always is of course to encourage students to continue through to their arequest i would be keen to hear from anyone who might have a set of bagpipes gathering dust in a cupboard at home and who might be prepared to loan these to the chaplain i am currently using a school set of pipes which are needed for students due to the increase in interest in learning the pipes if you do and would be happy to loan them please contact me rev warren fortune school 8731136 ext 7019 or home 8783116 be assured i would look after them as if they were my own as term one races on every good wish to you and yours rev.warrenfortune chaplain 6

the first few weeks have been very much about preparation for the new year and initiating new players into the many ensembles that play on a regular basis for the school and local community however things rarely go according to plan and it is testament to the quality of our school musicians that they are able to adapt very quickly and perform at a very good level so early in the new year this was evident in the accompanying of the hymns for sir rodney gallen s funeral service and performing other repertoire at the school gala music a highlight during these first few weeks was the opportunity our concord band members had of working with a number of musicians from the central band of the royal new zealand air force squadron leader owen clarke took the band through some of their pieces and it was amazing to hear the sound our band was able to generate with a little help from their new friends a number of our musicians are into solid preparation for their auditions to become members of the national youth orchestra while marcus jackson and harry grieg are looking forward to their week with the new zealand secondary students orchestra during the holidays we wish marcus harry and new year 12 student joshua white every success with their endeavours we offer our congratulations to charles louisson and messrs menzies and leigh our bagpipe tutors who competed with the city of hastings pipe band in the national pipe band championships last weekend they came third in the grade 3 section this is a very good result and just reward for many hours of practice and preparation the year has started particularly well for the bands and we look forward to our school and public performances as the year progresses mrjohnsnowling directorofperformancemusic hastings mayor lawrence yule enjoying a latte and keeping an eye on harry mcleod and stuart curran at the gala mr ian parsons and mrs michelle flint from st paul s collegiate music dept hamilton with director of music mr john snowling harry dent on euphonium playing the solo line of `senor cadera with the concert band the concord symphonic band workshop with squandron leader owen clarke and members of the central band of the royal new zealand airforce charles yule signals the opening of the gala 9
