detectors we have long been concerned that havelock might lose the priceless exhibits that we care for and the alarm system helps give us more security the third very pleasant occasion for the museum volunteers this month was an invitation by robin cox chairman of marlborough branch historic places trust and alison orchard to visit the pilot s house at wairau bar the reason for the invitation was that havelock museum had lent the society its leading light a nautical term for a guiding light in 2007 and with the pending dissolution of the branches of historic places trust the museum had resolved to lend the light to the orchard family for another five years robin suggested he arrange the tour and we didn t need asking twice for many of us this was our first visit to wairau bar and we were amazed by the work that alison and the other volunteers had done out there brambles and weeds have been cleared and alison was able to take us around and point out interesting places such as where wynen s second marlborough store was sited the burial area of children who had lived at the bar the positioning of te rauparaha s fortified pa the position of a midden and other interesting sites the bar is well worth a visit and alison brought out and explained a volume of very interesting photos which helped us realize the social importance of the area of course the views out to sea are great as well alison told us that work had started around the area in 2006 there is great anticipation at the moment as the builder is expected to start work on restoration of their pilot s house this month alison told us that the pilot s house is an iconic building as it is only one of three in the country which is still on its original site over the years visitors have left foreign coins in our donation box and while we appreciate any financial help we receive these coins cannot be changed into nz currency at any bank other than the reserve bank we have resolved the problem by parcelling up these coins and donating page 10 linden armstrong rita jacobson the leading light ian cameron all of the havelock museum with alison orchard wairau bar and robin cox marlborough historic society mauri ora na akoranga learning for life since 1861
