inner west whispers pssst pass on a whisper you ve heard to info@ciaomagazine.com.au we are c!ao latte leftie with class war breaking out across the nation latte leftie has executed a putsch against his nemesis righteous rightie and returned to the political fray dear ll i m a little confused as to which side i should be on in the class war on the one hand it s a rare treat to see the labor party departing from its trademark don t-frighten-thethoroughbred-horses timorousness on the other i like every other inner westie i know earn a six-figure income live in a house worth twenty times the average salary and was educated at a north shore private school just quietly i m also inclined to agree with tony abbott that the lower orders will splash their kiddies `schoolchild bonus up against the wall on a big night on the pokies at their local working man s club andrew annandale ll replies the tragedy of this poor excuse for a class war is that gillard and swan are waging it on behalf of a deluded lumpenproletariat who ve convinced themselves that being able to purchase a garish mcmansion a mere three-hour commute from civilisation is proof they re one pay rise away from joining the ruling class the real class conflict that s been tearing this country apart since that dulwich hill turncoat john howard assumed the leadership of the liberal party has been the unrelenting campaign waged against the creative class that s a bloody battle that s united everyone from grumpy old subscribers of the australian on the north shore to the vast armies of moronic daily telegraph readers in the west against we viciously persecuted inner-city elitists i m calling on newtown s tim freedman raised collaroy educated at shore law at sydney uni to marshall the left-leaning local businesses the inner west local business awards ended in triumph for all with some even managing to get lucky yes you know what i mean our roving eyes spotted more than one work colleague getting a little frisky after the elation of a big win l the biggest surprise of the night was in the seafood outlet category where longstanding winner ocean foods was ousted by newcomer joe bagnato s joe s catch of the day unfortunately joe wasn t there to claim the coveted trophy but he s very pleased to have won allegedly the owner of ocean foods who had won the award for 15 years running hasn t been sighted at the fish market in the last 10 years rumour has it however that he has been sighted at the blackjack table at the star in his own chair his shop has recently expanded perhaps doing whatever it can to recover from the scathing reviews on eatability having told this paper we are only a vw and he prefers to deal with porsches before rudely hanging up we can t help but think this king has lost his crown l if you thought there was a riot on norton st last weekend you are not alone the opening of cincotta chemist saw over 100 locals many of them italian pensioners waiting eagerly for the doors to open at 9am no one was prepared for the stampede it made the boxing day sales look lame fortunately arguments over who nabbed the bulk chewable vitamin c were eventually community life how do our local libraries rate anyone who still thinks libraries are stuffy poky places stocked with old books and dud cds needs to get out more some inner west ones are real gems all around the world libraries are embracing the digital era and becoming 21st century information hubs our local ones have had mixed success their fate really depends on how progressive their local council is some have fabulous new green buildings and become popular gathering places for all the community especially the young but others are struggling r oad test rant the inner west s mad men mad men s series five is finally underway to excitement of its fans they just can t get enough of that fabulous `60s style the suits the haircuts and the smoking but what fascinates so many devotees of the long-running series is its insight into what makes us who we are today put simply it sets the scene for our times all the tumultuous undercurrents which transformed the world we now live in were swirling away just beneath the surface in the early part of that decade feminism environmentalism consumerism gay rights and race equality are all expertly woven into the plot lines and the razor sharp dialogue only a few years later they would explode violently onto the streets and go on to define our politics right through to the present day set in the advertising world of manhattan these `mad men are the brightest smartest and most socially aware people of their time nowadays we are appalled at their sexism and racism and we gasp in amazement as don draper the lead character and his wife betty casually dump all their picnic litter on the ground at a local park rest assured in 50 years time people will be equally appalled by us don and betty live in the ultra respectable and affluent suburb of ossining a commute out of new york this is john cheever country land of the well-salaried but angst-ridden white professional midway through series three in a pivotal plot line for their our mad men have made marriage betty who is the inner west rich independently wealthy gets involved in a nimby campaign to save the neighbourhood from development her throw away line says it all they should just do it in newburgh it s already disgusting betty had a talent for marketing but don was too distracted to care though he s blindsided later by the rich politician who did take up betty s cause don don pay attention if betty were still alive she d be around the same age nearly 90 as one of balmain s still active resident campaigners today a coincidence sure but symbolic too for our very own mad men have defined and shaped the inner west s last 50 years wealthy media-savvy professionals have waged campaigns against a working waterfront balmain public housing mort bay public transport rozelle foreign uni students callan park a police station leichhardt a mall marrickville woolworths annandale and a leagues club rozelle the class bias is obvious but they re only the big ones there have been many more aimed at preventing additional housing and turning infill sites into spacious leafy parks as a result property prices have soared that s not a coincidence don a self-made man doesn t understand betty campaigning for free they should pay your for this he says political tragics will care designed by the same architectural team who did the astonishing new it s already do so if only for a coffee or lunch poky and dowdy but also apparently needs on the sunny balcony the café operator a dress code bare chests and skimpy clothing said business was awesome and it s not concord library is cooler than an apple store may cause offence i dutifully kept my shirt on hard to see why you could easily spend who use its spacious study areas attend the kids stylish space over two floors by far the best reading photographic exhibits after 4pm teens take over a spot in the inner west with a great view to boot incredibly helpful friendly and enthusiastic 2012 the sponsors congratulate the winners of the 2012 inner west local business awards major sponsor congratulations to all you dedicated local business people achieving excellence in your work life breakfast point is proud to be supportive in this and also to provide opportunity for excellence in your home and family lifestyle too kony who a couple of months ago i was chatting to someone in charge of the communications department of a major australian charity he said that if he had a dollar for every time someone had suggested you guys should really do a kony-type video he d never have to do any fundraising again even back in that initial flush of konymania he was sceptical that the clicktivist campaign would result in anything more than a bunch of middle-class westerners getting a feel-good buzz no doubt many gen y inner westies were among the 100 million odd people who were intoxicated by the possibility of righting one of the world s wrongs it would be easy to snigger at those who jumped on the bandwagon but were unable to maintain their rage about the fate of africa s child soldiers any longer than it takes to post a facebook status update broadcasting one s moral righteousness but the sad fact is that kony 2012 illustrates that even idealism has fallen victim to the narcissism that s engulfed first world societies once upon a time it was accepted that improving the lot of others might mean making personal sacrifices in the 30s the grandfathers of today s slacktivists fought franco s fascists in the spanish civil war by the time their parents took to the streets in the late 60s activism was already taking on onanistic overtones at the hands of the me generation but to give the boomers their due vietnam war protesters were still willing to run the risk of getting their skulls busted open by police batons but people don t do martyrdom any more they buy charity singles assuring them that they are the world clap along at u2 concerts when the tax-dodging bono calls on governments to spend more on foreign aid fire off a smart-arse tweets about gay marriage to q&a or flaunt a wristband or ribbon signalling their championing of the cause de jour ultimately the pop-cultural success of the kony video had nothing to do with our interest in africa and everything to do with our interest in selfesteem sugar hits once the kony campaign had recipes on the run pineapplecaramelsugar on monday night i shut my laptop with at least 10 more hours of work to get through it was 4:45pm and i had a heartbeat to get to the butchers before closing so away i flew two protesting kids in tow who had not stopped fighting the whole afternoon when i got there i realised that not only did i not care what i ate but i had no idea what to cook the boys would you please stop hitting your brother and tell me what you want for dinner i pleaded pineaplecarramelsugar for a second i contemplated giving it to them because then at least i could have some peace but good old-fashioned parental guilt kicked in and i realised that because i love my boys and their health is important to me that i had better give them something that would nourish them what did i cook pineapple caramel and sugar an instant hit below is a throw-together recipe with some other ingredients chucked in for good measure and it was a meal that lasted two days ingredients 1 rack lifestyle ask sal think green when renovating your bathroom a lot of us wish that we could do more for the environment and thinking green when renovating your bathroom is one of the easiest ways you can help out our planet here are a few things to consider in your own bathroom if you have an outdated toilet you could be using as much as 12 litres of water per flush even if you are not remodelling the entire bathroom think about replacing your toilet modern toilets usually use around 4.5 litres for a full flush and 3 litres for a half flush replacing your showerhead is another way to reduce your environmental footprint your old showerhead could be using as much as 25 litres a minute today s low flow showerheads usually range between 6 and 9 litres per minute they have been designed and engineered to do things like control droplet size and mix water with air to give you a good flow so while they do conserve water and energy they still have the feeling of an old full flow showerhead avoid vinyl shower curtains curtains made from either pvc-free plastic or even hemp are a better alternative although curtains seem like the most cost-effective option you might also want to consider installing a glass shower screen as these have a more contemporary look and are not as expensive as you may think if you opt for a glass screen use a squeegee to clean the glass after every shower this will help you to avoid using harsh chemicals remember keeping your bathroom environmentally friendly ultimately adds to the total value of your home n for more info call salvi messina owner of renovation boys tel 9519 5511 www.renovationboys.com.au running with ryhan get a yummy mummy body many new mums ask me how to lose the fat and get their pre-pregnancy body back there are many ways to achieve a `yummy mummy body but when to start exercising depends on how fit you were during pregnancy if you continued exercising right up to the due date then you can start light exercises straight after the baby is born if you didn t exercise or have never exercised at all then start slowly pelvic floor exercise helps tighten up the deep abdominal muscles that hold your core tight lie on your back on the floor with your knees bent using your breathing to control your core slowly inhale then exhale and try to hold your breath for 5-10 seconds now while holding your breath squeeze your tummy tight and hold that contraction then relax and wait 5 seconds to continue the exercise for 5-10 repetitions after mastering the above exercise move on to the swiss ball sit with feet planted on the ground and use the same breathing technique to tighten your core and lift one leg gently off the ground hold for 10 seconds relax and return leg back to ground perform 5-10 repetitions on each leg take a stroll with the stroller getting out for a walk will boost your mood and release feel-good chemicals in the brain help with weight loss and build stamina start with 10-20 mins a few days a week and increase as your fitness develops these basic exercises will help during the first six weeks of post-pregnancy after this try pilates yoga and swimming don t swim before six weeks to avoid infections don t do any aerobic or running for the first three months to allow your muscles and joints to recover fully it s important to listen to your body and not over-do things if you become tired you will be more likely to injure yourself pace yourself and your yummy mummy body will appear in good time n for more information email ryhan.v@gmail.com property of the week cottage oasis with cbd callagher estate agents be successful after a centenary particularly in such a competitive industry as real estate the award also recognises all our hard work and dedication i would think my great grandfather and callagher estate agents founder joseph callagher would be very proud you accepted the award with your young daughter do you hope one day she ll join the family business we were involved in the family business as young children at first just coming in after school then on weekends to lend a hand my brother david and i in particular took a shine to it and had a real passion for real estate from a young age we now co-own and manage the business attending auctions and going to industry nights is just part of how our family is especially with both my wife and i involved in the business anika asked to start an auction one day and it just went from there and now often will do the preannouncement on site there is no pressure for my daughter to come into the business at all if she has the passion and desire then that s great what is the secret to the business s longevity working hard having passion and a clear direction of what you want to achieve i run the business as if i was an employee of the company ideally doing what s best for the business overall and leading by example what s next for callagher estate agents we have over the past 10 years purchased several rent rolls other agencies within the inner west we will continue to grow our rental portfolio and buy other agencies where possible which will expand our property management division and naturally grow our sales division i think it s important for the industry to consolidate there are just too many agencies working this small inner west area we will see major changes to our industry over the
