102 srontesporthtnrlnc 26 time rip van winkle many years ago there lived a man called rip van winkle there was nothing he enjoyed more than settling down in a corner and having a good sleep his poor wife had to do all the work for him cleaning the house and caring for his children despite his faults rip was a kind man always ready to help anyone who was in trouble he was a great friend to children and would always mend any broken toys for them but rip s wife could not see his good side she was always scolding him for being so lazy but it didn t do any good whenever his wife began to grumble rip would call his dog and go for a walk in the woods one day rip and his dog went for a long walk up a high mountain rip had never been this way before it was a warm day so he lay down rip under an old tree to rest suddenly he heard a voice calling him rip come and help me rip looked down the mountainsideand saw a little old man with a long beard the little man was staggering along rip rip come and help me with a barrel on his back again he called oh dear thought rip what should i do rip went down to help the little man and lifted the barrel onto his own follow me said the man and he led the way up to the shoulders mountain top once there rip saw twenty more little men they were bowling great wooden balls at a line of skittles making a noise like rumbling thunder rip put the barrel down and soon the little men were emptying it into huge mugs the men drank in silence then went back to playing skittles rip was feeling rather thirsty himself so he picked up one of the men s mugs and tried a taste it was rather good so he kept on drinking until he had emptied several mugs soon his eyes began to feel heavy he tried to keep awake but he sank slowly to the ground and into a deep sleep when he woke rip found himself back under the old tree the day was bright and he rubbed his eyes sleepily oh dear he thought l should never have touched that strong drink i must have slept all night what on earth am i going to tell my wife he
