sporting parental advice heading in to a busy season of winter sport it is important that parents and supporters look to assist their children to have an enjoyable and successful season here are some handy reminders as to how this can be achieved the night before parents can help by discussing their child s plan for the competition day what time do you need to be there what might the game plan be what is one thing you hope to improve on from last week discuss or relive any times when your son or daughter has really performed well what were all the things that lead up to them playing so well and how did it feel for them this will help immensely with positive thoughts for the following day help them with time management do they have all the gear they need ready for the morning agree on what time they will need to get up to have breakfast and be ready to leave try to help them be relaxed and in a happy frame of mind in the car or van on the way to tournaments or games avoid saying you must do this you must do that comments should be more like have fun work hard support each other take turns do your bit and say thank you ask if there is anything you can do for them or the coach to help out as much as it may grate on your ears let them play their favourite music on the way there during the game affirm effort we want to be rewarders of good effort we value trying as a most special behaviour encourage our children look for situations to say well done and good effort and if you can add in specific comments about what was well done even better applaud supportive behaviour when our children do things that show they are supporting their team mates we really want to highlight it ignore the mistakes our children will inevitably make trust your coaches to pick the time to work on these negative comments are not welcome on our bench if you feel like saying it then remove yourself so that it is not said to or in front of our troops acknowledge that our body language sends clear messages so keep it positive attempt to ensure that our children include everyone in activities they may embark in on the sideline we all need to be monitors of good language 9
