volume 7 june 17 2010 sponsors of the tauranga intermediate school sports academy school cross country dear students parents and caregivers one of the largest cross country events in new zealand will take place on friday 18 june at tauranga intermediate school we look forward to the turnout of parents uncles aunties and grandparents to come along and support our 1200 competitors all students will participate in the 3km event run on the school site and close surrounds the event will commence at 9.15 and conclude at 11.30 students are working hard in preparation for the event and are all looking forward to seeing which house will dominate the event congratulations to mr plummer and our mountain biking team who travelled to taupo on friday 28 may a tough day of competition with challenging weather however some pleasing results thank you to those parents who assisted with transporting students to and from the event your support is much appreciated the aims games are now just under 3 months away some of the squads are currently being finalised and my congratulations to those students that have been selected once teams are finalised we will publish them tauranga intermediate will be represented in the 14 sporting codes gareth scholes deputy principal

nzct aims games a record 101 schools have registered to compete at the 7th nzct aims games that s over 3,600 students coming to tauranga week 8 of term 3 we are currently finalising our team selections some individual sports have been named already week 1 of term 3 all students selected for this year s competition will bring home a newsletter detailing information on the event 14 sporting codes make up the 2010 aims games badminton basketball cross country football golf gymsports hockey multisport netball squash swimming tennis and waterpolo this year rubgy sevens is a new sport which is included check out the new website at www.nzaimsgames.co.nz sport bop amazing race 12 schools through out the region with 6 students from each competed in the amazing race on the 12th of may at memorial park the weather was not very suitable for running around in our team we had andrew robinson rm 20 luke robinson rm 19 aaron fredheim rm 39 ariana moffatt rm 19 sh!vaughn ririnui rm 11 and payton silvester rm 19 we had to decode our booklet which was wet and ripping to get our clues then we had to figure out where to go and run there do an activity to get our next clue we arrived at the finish first but our booklet was not quite as readable as the others overall it was very challenging day with some very testing activities payton silvester rm 19 pb/bop intermediate squash competition thursday may 21 at around 7:20am the t.i.s squash team set out to whakatane to play in the bop/pb intermediate squash champs the team consisted of 8 players luke cairns-nelson rm 30 olivia mconie rm 30 morgan amos rm 29 hinemairangi wilson rm 39 te maia brooks rm 12 zayne wallis rm 36 brad douglas and i it was a good start for t.i.s with all the team winning their first games the success continued for t.i.s with me getting 1st in yr7 boys te maia brooks getting 2nd in yr8 girls zayne wallis also getting 2nd in yr8 boys and olivia mconie getting 2nd in yr7 girls the good results kept coming when t.i.s was awarded the trophy for best intermediate school in bop/pb for the first time it was a great day and everyone had lots of fun we will be back next year to defend our title alex revington rm18 2

tis badminton champs 2010 2010 badminton championships were held last week at school all students were given the opportunity to enter and compete in this knock-out championship competition the boys competition was very close with year 7 boys showing some dominance boys tennis champion reuben white rm 4 beat top squash player jamie oakley rm 7 17/15 15/9 in a very skilled and competitive final both of these boys have older brothers that have previously won this title in a very close match for third place was andrew park rm 8 who beat ryan martin rm 6 18/17 16/14 the girls singles title also went to a year 7 jordan ross rm 30 defeated naomi stewart rm 36 15/7 15/4 in the final frances bernardino rm 30 had a close match against maddison mason rm 32 for third place winning 15/9 15/13 medals for placegetters and a trophy for the winners will be awarded at our end of year sports prizegiving in december girls winner jordan ross rm 30 runner naomi stewart rm 36 boys runner up jamie oakley rm 7 winner reuben white rm 4 pb/bop mountain biking competition rain poured down on a tragic morning in tauranga a damp yet excited mountain bike squad assembled at school ready to challenge for the bop poverty bay mountain bike championship to be hosted at the craters of the moon in taupo for many of the squad it was to be their first taste of cross country mountain bike racing upon arriving in taupo we found the skies overcast and cold but pleasently dry the track surface was well drained pumice hopefully leading to some fast track times the teams event placed our three squads in 8th 11th and 13th place 3

each of the individual races were fast and aggressive courtney williams rm 42 qualified 3rd in her heat finishing in 7th place in the girls final with many of our boys racing cross country for the first time it was an interesting experience many had excellent starts but suffered gear failure daniel munro rm 42 was a stand out by coming 3rd in his heat then finishing the final in 13th place thankyou very much to all the parents who helped with transport and supervision on the day jacob plummer teacher in charge tauranga ramblers cross country on saturday 5th june 22 students competed in the annual tauranga open cross country event overall our school finished in 3rd place individual results as follows u12 boys race our school got the trifecta with andrew robinson rm 20 winning justin mitchell rm 31 placing second and fergus kirk rm 7 getting third keeley grantham rm 4 finished 3rd in the u12 girls race argos gymsport championships our after-school gymnastics programme run by marie farrell of the gymnastics academy has been running since the begining of the year the annual argos gymsport competition gives these students an opportunity to perform and compete what they have been practising at this class on tuesday 15 june around 25 students competed in a wide range of events competitors were graded into flyers and twisters so that they all competed within their own ability groups each competitor performed three gym routines a floor routine vault and beam/mat for girls/boys students competed as a team of 3 or 4 with the top three scores counting toward the team result individual scores were also counted competitors won medals for first second and third with their scores being counted individually in the three apparatus and aggregated as a team result in gym routines and rhythmic routines leah nicholas twisters novice boys artistic 1st individual adam herbert 2nd team adam herbert jake raybould dean van niekirk open junior girls artistic 3rd individual tayla smith 6th individual jody pinkerton rm 19 rm 19 rm 5 rm 2 rm2 rm 41 4 dean van niekirk adam herbert jake raybould

twisters club girls artistic 1st individual leah nicholas rm 42 congratulations to adam jake tayla jody and leah who have qualified to compete at the bop regional gymsports competition on 17th august if you would like to receive a copy of this newsletter electronically via email please contact sabrina jackson at sabrinaj@tauranga-int.school.nz to be included on a mailing list girls rsa chess competition on thursday the 10th june a small group of girls laura harkness rm 41 jemma horne rm 41 helena jones rm 20 and lucy happe rm 20 went to the rsa for a girls chess competition there were primary and college students also at this competition but they had their own division there were 6 rounds and the aim was to win and earn points if you win you get a point if you get a stale mate you get half a point and if you loss you get 0 jemma finished in 3rd place the girls all had fun and they are going to continue playing laura harkness rm 41 pb/bop ultimate frisbee tournament heading down to gisborne after a tiring trip of four and a half hours the t.i.s frisbee team reach their destination arriving at gisborne intermediate we were feeling a a bit scared as well as excited as we waited to meet our billets the next morning we arrived at gisborne intermediate ready for the 2nd bop/pb ultimate frisbee tournament we played our first game against rotorua intermediate and lost 7-0 it was a bit of an eye opener for us we played 6 games winning 1 and drawing 1 finishing 9/12 we were happy enough with that result and really enjoyed the experience of what the tournament is like te puke intermediate won again cameron smith rm 1 was our team mvp with 6 of our 10 players year 7 we look forward to going back next year bigger stronger and knowing what to expect thanks to mrs hampton and miss hannay harry coulson charlie mcilwaine and rebecca sutton rm 22 5
