page 4 of 8 a taste of outer space right here in creighton know which package contained the seeds from the space station until after their results were sent to tomatosphere tomatoes were chosen for this experiment for several reasons first and foremost they are an excellent source of nourishment by studying the page 5 of 8 effect of outer space on plants several questions may be answered these being 1 how to supply personel with necessities of life 2 ways of consuming carbon dioxide produce by staff through photosynthesis 3 what grows fast in limited space the students planted and recorded the time it took to germinate and how many of the seeds actually grew the results were then electronically sent to tomatoshpere mr gray then received a certificate documenting the type of seeds given and a report of findings for the whole program each participating student will receive a copy of this certificate the students can also take their research home and eat tomatoes that have been in outer space so our residents can brag they have grown tomatoes underground as well as grown them from seeds that spent time in outer space have you ever imagined being apart of the space program it is safe to say that just about every child and probably many adults have dreamt about outer space it could be dreaming of being an astronaut or being apart of the research team well the grade 3 h and 3 w and the grade 9 students under the supervision of mr gray were able to do just that they had the opportunity this year to actually take part in an award winning research program tomatosphere tomatosphere is an educational outreach project approximately eight years old and has been introduced as part of the science curriculum in more than 11,000 classrooms in canada and in the united states this project has a dual purpose 1 educate and inspire students 2 expand space research especially in long term travel mr gray applied to be a part of this program and they was accepted the grade 3 students planted seed provided by tomatosphere under the watchful eye of the grade 9 students these tomato seeds are unique in the fact they were taken to the international space station by canadian astronaut julie payette they remained on board the space station for two months and then made the long trip back home the potential seeds were exposed to elements that normal seeds would not be exposed to such as 1 pressure of launch and re-entry to earth s atmosphere 2 changes in gravity aboard the space station 3 length of time in outer space mr gray received two packages of heinz tomato seeds and each package contained 30 seeds as this was a blind study mr gray and the students did not library news continued grade 8 to 12 students and staff may go to a blog linked to the creighton school website to record their reading and chat with other readers we are going to keep the reading fires burning all summer long in september each postcard and blog entry will equal one ballot in a draw for awesome prizes 6 readers will win $50 worth of books of their choice to keep plus they will choose 3 titles they would really like to have in the library collection during the 2009-2010 school year 1,040 new books have been added to our collection of almost 14,000 books and out-dated or unused material has been weeded out we are happy to report that 10,800 or so books were signed out during the year our library is a well-used much loved part of our school have a wonderful summer of reading!
