issue 8 june 2010 welcome welcome to the eighth edition of the mfl sunderland primary newsletter the aim of the newsletter is to keep all primary school mfl teachers informed of the latest developments in primary language teaching nationally regionally and within the local authority previous editions of the newsletter can be found on the mfl sunderland website at www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/primary-newsletters.htm i would love to hear your comments and feedback about the newsletters please email them to clare.seccombe@gmail.com the future of primary languages following uncertainty amongst language professionals over the future of languages in ks2 ruth churchill chief executive of cilt the national centre for languages issued the following statement a couple of weeks ago key stage 2 languages do not currently have the legal status to become statutory in september 2011 however the entitlement to learn a foreign language in key stage 2 still stands having come into effect this year as many of you are aware reforming the primary curriculum was one of the key provisions removed from the children schools and families bill during consideration of lords amendments in april 2010 the introduction of statutory languages in key stage 2 from september 2011 was part of the proposed new primary curriculum and therefore was also removed from the bill the future shape of the primary curriculum and the statutory status of languages will depend on the policies of the new government cilt is in close contact with baroness coussins and others in a position of influence through the all-party parliamentary group on modern languages and we are very grateful to her for raising this issue so prominently we will continue to work together to encourage this dialogue and to promote the further development of language teaching in the primary school while we await further news please take full advantage of the services and resources which we make available free to support you as you embed language learning in your curriculum you will find a free scheme of work for ks2 french on the website as well as a scheme for eyfs and ks1 see below for news of podcasts for helping your teachers to improve their french and news of free french language assistants will be coming soon www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/resources pr fr.htm french lessons for teachers the mfl sunderland primary french podcasts have over 500 subscribers are you one of them learn french by listening to short lessons on your mp3 player in the car in your classroom on the computer the podcasts complement the sunderland scheme of work for primary french and will enable you to use french more confidently and correctly during your lessons in school you could also use them for training in a staff meeting learn french together www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland/resources-pr-fr-podcasts.htm
