8 open door policy open door policy special programmes we welcome parents at all times and enjoy your involvement in our programmes if you would like to assist in your child s classroom please make arrangements beforehand with the class teacher you may have special skills hobbies or experiences which you are happy to share with the school regular functions are organised where parents are invited to the school assemblies sports days book displays and various class activities meetings are also organised on specific topics e.g curriculum areas and how you can work with your child at home to support the learning that is happening at school meet the teacher/parent evenings are held early in the year if you wish to discuss aspects of your child s progress with the teacher we would appreciate you making an appointment so the teacher is able to ensure they are available any serious complaint about an aspect of school life should be made to the principal in the first instance special programmes the high quality of the learning at leamington school is a feature we are very proud of we also encourage children to experience a range of extra curricula activities to allow them to become well rounded individuals new entrants/reception room new entrants have many adjustments to make in the transition from preschool to school the physical size of the school the large number of people a more structured day and the increased level of effort expended on learning because of this we operate a reception room as a transition to the more structured programme offered in the other classrooms we encourage children to stay at school until 2.55pm but if a child is obviously very tired early dismissal can be arranged after discussion between the parents and the class teacher 07 827 5747 07 827 9382 hall 027 7407 303 principal 07 827 8196 fax office@leamington.school.nz www.leamington.school.nz

9 special needs and special abilities we have an extensive special needs programme in place which includes reading recovery and individual small groups withdrawn for reading written oral language and mathematics we also utilise a range of agencies we have a special abilities teacher running a range of extension programmes through the school choir orchestra kapahaka children from the year 4 to 6 area of the school are given the chance to join the choir orchestra is an option for our year 5 and 6 pupils these are held during school time years 1 to 3 children can join the junior kapahaka group and years 4 and 6 can join the senior kapahaka group after school care the school runs an after school daycare centre each afternoon from 3.00 pm to 5.30 pm in the hall lounge children are able to attend the centre on a regular or occasional basis fees are very modest and help to pay for the supervisors children who attend the centre are provided with afternoon tea information may be obtained from the school office to contact the after school programme phone 827 9382 after 3.15pm physical education sport and swimming sport games and physical education are an integral part of the school programme our superb hall enables us to have indoor programmes please notify the school if your child needs to be exempt from physical education or sport for health reasons during the swimming season all children are expected to swim on every day assigned to their class unless the teacher has been notified by the childs parents caregivers the school has a number of sports teams including netball rugby hockey and water polo teams these teams are coached by parents local clubs outside school host soccer and rugby league and parents are kept informed of these opportunities the school hall is also used for basketball samba soccer gymnastics and kick boxing these can be accessed through the office and are on a user pays basis 07 827 5747 07 827 9382 hall 027 7407 303 principal special programmes 07 827 8196 fax office@leamington.school.nz www.leamington.school.nz

10 school facilities school facilities technology the school has a very clear philosophy that technology needs to be used to support and extend learning not drive learning to support the learning that takes place in class the school has an information technology room and has all class rooms networked with computers we also have laptops that are used in the classrooms all children get access to developing information technology skills i.e use of fax hall we have a very large hall that is used extensively by the children throughout the day the size of our hall allows the children to continue to be involved in physical activity during the winter months and participate in activities like gymnastics basketball indoor soccer unihoc etc our hall is available to community groups from 5.30pm each evening or at weekends bookings are available through the school office 827 5747 during school hours pool the school pool is open during the summer months the pool is heated to allow children to stay in the water for longer the pool also has separate sections to allow our children who are still cautious in the water to feel more secure while they are learning swimming skills playgrounds the school has many separate playground areas there is a modern playground area set aside specifically for our junior children we also have a playground for our middle and senior children as well as a confidence course we have a separate netball court area 2 large fields patter tennis courts and bumble puppy areas · · · · · · · · internet digital camera computer video scanner telephone photocopier 07 827 5747 07 827 9382 hall 027 7407 303 principal 07 827 8196 fax office@leamington.school.nz www.leamington.school.nz

15 general information general information absence notifications all absences from school should be notified either by a note prior to the absence to the classroom teachers or through a phone call to the school office you can leave a message on the answer phone prior to 8.30am the school will contact home for an explanation of an absence if we have not been previously notified accidents at school should your child have an accident at school we will make every effort to contact the home however if it is not possible to contact home a doctor will be consulted whenever the accident is considered to be potentially serious parents are asked to supply a contact number at which they can be reached through the day after school playing with friends children who wish to go and play with their friends after school must have arranged this activity with both sets of parents the day before they may not ring their parents from school for this purpose behaviour management leamington school is determined to have a safe and welcoming environment where children love to be and has no tolerance towards behaviour that compromises the learning and safety of other children we adopt a positive approach to behaviour management rules are kept to a minimum an d are generally con cerne d w ith safety and interacting with respect for one another children are aware of these rules and of the consequences of breaking them if children do make inappropriate choices we contact parents at an early stage in our attempts to improve behavior we welcome contact from parents about problems at home this enables us to develop consistent approaches 07 827 5747 07 827 9382 hall 027 7407 303 principal 07 827 8196 fax office@leamington.school.nz www.leamington.school.nz
