what are the iowa tests of basic skills the itbs are norm-referenced assessments administered throughout the archdiocese of detroit and the united states the standardized tests primarily measure student achievement in the academic areas of reading including vocabulary word analysis reading comprehension and listening language mathematics social studies science understanding the scores a grade equivalent score is an estimate of the performance that an average group at a grade level is assumed to demonstrate on the test at a particular time in the school year for example a score of 5.8 represents a performance level typical of fifth-grade students in the eighth month april of the school year.

scores from key grade levels the following graphs show olr student achievement at the beginning of third fifth and eighth grades in the core subjects of reading language and math as well as a composite score the composite score includes social studies science and sources of information along with the core subjects the grade 3 scores give a snapshot of the strength of the olr primary program as the test was administered at the beginning of third grade the grade 5 scores demonstrate continued student improvement during the intermediate grades showing growth made during the third and fourth grades the grade 8 scores are an early indication of high school readiness as well as affirming that the longer a student remains at our lady of refuge school the better that student performs.
