inspiring innovation mohammad saidullah motihari district bihar the amphibious bicycle and other technological contributions a life-long passion for innovation since childhood saidullah has had an interest in mechanical things he was always busy solving problems by putting forward innovative solutions in the form of inventions the state of bihar is prone to floods and in 1975 there was a big flood in champaran which lasted for about three weeks and saidullah had to cross the river to get provisions to cross the river he used a boat and in the city he used a bicycle then it struck him that if he could make the bicycle float on water as well as move on land it would save money within three days he had developed such a bicycle this amphibious bicycle is also known as noor bicycle using this cycle he crossed the ganga from pahelaghat to mahendrughat patna initially he spent rs.6000 on the development of the floating bicycle but now he says he will be able to build it at a cost of rs 3000 mohammad mehtar hussain and mustaq ahamad assam looking for a low-cost alternative to pump water in the fields for the winter crops mohammad mehtar hussain 32 and his younger brother mushtaq 28 devised this simple windmill made up of bamboo and tin sheets though the water table is not too deep but drawing water is not easy since electricity supply is erratic and most small farmers can not afford other means also both of them then started building a windmill unit using locally available materials such as bamboo wood strips of old tyres pieces of iron etc although they had never seen a windmill before they were able to develop the windmill in no time and the first prototype became functional in only four days with the help of a local carpenter this was possible because the brothers had constructively debated long on the form that they wanted for the turbine and had put down everything on paper sandeep kumar west champaran district of bihar sandeep kumar has done the incredible despite being physically challenged he built a folding bicycle when he was just 14 years old today he no longer needs to worry about standing in the long queues at a bus stop or get trampled by others he can carry the bicycle in his bag wherever he goes i would like to make modified versions of the cycle to help those who are physically challenged and also those who travel to work everyday without proper public transport they can easily carry the cycle and assemble it in just 30 seconds says 26-year old sandeep.

a story of appreciation a young academically excellent person went to apply for a managerial position a big company he passed the first interview the director did the last interview made the last decision the director discovered from the cv that the youth s academic achievements were excellent all the way from the secondary school until the postgraduate research never had a year when he did not score the director asked did you obtain any scholarships in school the youth answered none the director asked was it your father who paid for your school fees the youth answered my father passed away when i was one year old it was my mother who paid for my school fees the director asked where did your mother work the youth answered my mother worked as clothes cleaner the director requested the youth to show his hands the youth showed a pair of hands that were smooth and perfect the director asked have you ever helped your mother wash the clothes before the youth answered never my mother always wanted me to study and read more books furthermore my mother can wash clothes faster than me the director said i have a request when you go back today go and clean your mother s hands and then see me tomorrow morning the youth felt that his chance of landing the job was high when he went back he happily requested his mother to let him clean her hands his mother felt strange happy but with mixed feelings she showed her hands to the kid the youth cleaned his mother s hands slowly his tear fell as he did that it was the first time he noticed that his mother s hands were so wrinkled and there were so many bruises in her hands some bruises were so painful that his mother shivered when they were cleaned with water this was the first time the youth realized that it was this pair of hands that washed the clothes everyday to enable him to pay the school fee the bruises in the mother s hands were the price that the mother had to pay for his graduation academic excellence and his future after finishing the cleaning of his mother hands the youth quietly washed all the remaining clothes for his mother that night mother and son talked for a very long time next morning the youth went to the director s office the director noticed the tears in the youth s eyes asked can you tell me what have you done and learned yesterday in your house the youth answered i cleaned my mother s hand and also finished cleaning all the remaining clothes the director asked please tell me your feelings the youth said 1 i know now what is appreciation without my mother there would not the successful me today 2 by working together and helping my mother only i now realize how difficult and tough it is to get something done 3 i have come to appreciate the importance and value of family relationship the director said this is what i am looking for to be my manager i want to recruit a person -who can appreciate the help of others a person -who knows the sufferings of others to get things done -and a person who would not put money as his only goal in life you are hired later on this young person worked very hard and received the respect of his subordinates every employee worked diligently and as a team the company s performance improved tremendously a child who has been protected and habitually given whatever he wanted would develop entitlement mentality and would always put himself first he would be ignorant of his parent s efforts when he starts work he assumes that every person must listen to him and when he becomes a manager he would never know the sufferings of his employees and would always blame others for this kind of people who may be good academically may be successful for a while but eventually would not feel sense of achievement he will grumble and be full of hatred and fight for more if we are this kind of protective parents are we really showing love or are we destroying the kid instead you can let your kid live in a big house eat a good meal learn piano watch a big screen tv -but when you are cutting grass please let them experience it -after a meal let them wash their plates and bowls together with their brothers and sisters it is not because you do not have money to hire a maid but it is because you want to love them in a right way you want them to understand no matter how rich their parents are one day their hair will grow gray same as the mother of that young person the most important thing is your kid learns how to appreciate the effort and experience the difficulty and learns the ability to work with others to get things done life is something that happens when u are planning something else by aajay bundela

ibm scientists reveal 5 life-changing innovations for 2012 the gap between science fiction and science fact is narrowing daily here s a look at five emerging technologies and market and society trends that scientists at ibm s research lab think have the potential to change the way people work live and interact during the next five years power from the people anything that moves or produces heat has the potential to create energy that can be captured big blue s scientists said in their sixth annual ibm 5 in 5 look at what s in store for mankind in the near term walking jogging bicycling the heat from your computer or the water flowing through plumbing scientists believe that advances in renewable energy technology will allow individuals to collect this kinetic energy which now goes to waste and use it to help power homes offices and cities on a personal level while you re riding your bicycle to work devices on the spokes of your wheels could be recharging batteries you could later use to power some of the lights in your home on a larger scale ibm researchers in ireland are looking at ways to understand and minimize the environmental impact of converting ocean wave energy into electricity you are your password each person has a unique biological identity your biometric data facial definitions retina scans and voice files will be composited through software to build an individual s unique online password ibm researchers said referred to as multi-factor biometrics smarter systems will be able to use this information in real-time to safeguard your identity you will no longer need to create track or remember multiple passwords in the future ibm scientists said you will be able to walk up to an atm and securely withdraw money by simply speaking your name or looking into a tiny sensor that can recognize the unique patterns in the retina of your eye mind reading gets real mind reading may make the leap from science fiction to real life sooner than expected the researchers in armonk n.y said ibm scientists are among those researching how to link your brain to devices such as a computer or smartphone and be able to control inanimate objects by just thinking about it if you think about calling someone for example the smartphone would then dial that number scientists in the field of bioinformatics have designed headsets with advanced sensors to read electrical brain activity that can recognize facial expressions and the thoughts of a person ibm researchers believe that within five years we will begin early applications of this technology in the gaming and entertainment industry digital divide closes in five years ibm said the gap between information haves and have-nots will narrow considerably due to advances in mobile technology by then 80 percent of the current global population will have a mobile device this will empower people without a lot of spending power they believe in india ibm used speech technology and mobile devices to enable rural villagers who were illiterate to pass along information through recorded messages on their phones with access to information that was not there before villagers could check weather reports to help them decide when to fertilize crops to know when doctors were coming to town and to find the best prices for their crops or merchandise junk becomes gems in five years unsolicited advertisements may feel so personalized and relevant that you ll think spam is dead at the same time spam filters will be so precise that you ll never be bothered by unwanted sales pitches again.ibm said it is developing technology that uses real-time analytics to make sense and integrate data from across all the facets of your life such as your social networks and online preferences to present and recommend information that is useful only to you from news to sports to politics you ll trust the technology will know what you want so you can decide what to do with it.

idiot box ceases to be an idiot the last month witnessed major happenings on the idiot box yes i should stop using this name from a channel calling it quits suddenly to an established news channel ready to undergo a revamp there was enough action in the television industry not only this after heavy promotions of the dirty picture an i b ministry directive to sony tv initiated a big debate amongst filmmakers turner broadcast system announced last month that it s curtains down for their channel imagine tv the channel which was launched in 2008 was sold by ndtv in 2010 in fact many tv analysts believed that imagine did more harm than good to the entire ndtv group as their account books were all in red during that time cut to 2012 and things aren t rosy for the turner group however one truly believes that an indication or a warning beforehand would have helped the employees in preparing for the mental financial agony no doubt that the management is doing all that it can to place its staff members by hiring a placement consultancy a channel shutting down isn t good news anyways moving on to the larger picture in the television space star news will soon be re-christened as abp news the joint venture between star india anand bazaar patrika was called off after their 9 years association in few months time one will get to watch abp news star news abp majha star majha abp ananda star ananda abp group has a tough job ahead as star news is a well connected brand with the audience and hence the transition will not be an easy task but the curiosity arises here to know the real reason behind this divorce it varies from ego issues between the two networks to star s individual ambition to create its own news entity in india with more editorial control and the last shocker in the tv industry came in the form of a notice sent by the information broadcast ministry to sony tv the notice directed the channel to premiere the much hyped movie the dirty picture after 11 pm as it contained adult content several filmmakers launched protests against this dictatorship though the channel refused to speak on this issue the brains behind this film ekta kapoor milan luthria were visibly upset more so balaji telefilms as the satellite deal with the channel will have to be re-worked now so if the dirty picture was seen as a path breaking movie in bollywood it s going to be a rule changing one for television expect more drama on this other adult movies waiting to be premiered on tv in the coming days.

understanding innovation for a globalised india innovation and india share a awkwardly funny relationship nothing like what another i israel the startup nation does we have more of a rhetorical commitment to harp on innovation and how we spend pittance on it rather than the chutzpah way just do it in jewish culture thought and action primarily i consider some core reasons for our discomfort when it comes to innovating 1 lack read absence of vision of clarity on where innovation is required this is rooted in mediocrity in the education and training systems rendering the individual society enterprise unable to exploit processes technologies and innovations in the correct way we just fail to connect academics industry and innovation for utility by sustainable robust linkages 2 moral corruption in the chaos of market players where theres an acute deficit of trust/credibility if someone comes to you proposing and innovation or to sell an untried product consumer/machine/software/process/etc with what ease/conviction would you accept the proposal 3 immaturity of the innovation market lack of cultured patents regimes and reluctance of the regulatory authorities government to think and act globally were stuck in a medieval thought process of protecting our poor from cost escalations due to rise in innovation costs whereas were actually disguising our poor human/intellectual capital development systems our institutions 4 points 2 and 3 synthesize to how well the government the state complements and facilitates the efforts of public and private sector research development agencies in their exchanges with the global players regulations and consumers of innovations when decision/policy making by the countrys leadership is wobbly directionless and lackluster the innovation story cannot hope to take off the instability of the system makes it near impossible for innovators or aspirants to find capital/fundings finally every champion nation of innovation consider israel usa france now brazil by leaps and bounds is distinguished by its ability to envision its aspirations as one united people everyone agreeing to disagree on the peripherals but committing to a non-negotiable consensus on some core challenges and opportunities this despite the pot-boiling diversity we complain about our diversity and simultaneously abuse it by ignoring its ills and manipulating it on the other hand innovation is not something intangible its compatibility with the system depends on the concreteness of the socio-economic needs which it is meant to provide for lets not view innovation from an uninformed perception of western-pioneered ideals innovation has a philosophy as its backbone do we understand the philosophy maulik d mavani a civil service aspirant from mumbai worked in the field of public health and has been associated with the observer research foundation mumbai the views expressed are strictly personal and bear no allegiance to any organization.
