bryanston high school high times newsletter 2 of 2012 06/03/2012 very important governing body election information as you will have seen in the letter sent out to parents on 20th february our school governing body sgb elections will be taking place on monday 12th march between 18h00 and 19h30 which will include nominations and the election meeting nominations may submitted from 5th march all nomination forms must be placed in a sealed envelope and deposited in sandy de villiers office if further nominations or proxy forms are required please collect these from mrs de villiers dear parents once we reach march and we change over from summer sports to winter sports teachers always feel the greater urgency of preparing matrics for their finals and to finalise marks for the first term it has always been a positive tradition at bryanston high that we do not hand out reports at the end of the term but rather continue with a full assessment programme right to the end of the term and then reports for the first term are handed out at the beginning of the second term we believe this makes more of a positive end to the first term parents evenings will then follow we have had a very successful end to the summer sports season where there were many good cricket tennis and swimming results i am happy that we have sustained b teams in all sports although at times it was very frustrating when other schools don t have b teams to participate but it is also encouraging when our b teams end up playing many schools a teams i am also grateful that bryanston has a teaching staff who are prepared to commit so many hours to the extra mural programme the month of march ushers in the winter sports season and as we write hockey netball and rugby are having trials for the new season it has always been bryanston s policy that we would like every student at the school to be involved in an activity in the second term which ranges from the sports fields to cross country squash and the musical production we have chosen grease as our musical which has been done before but is timeless in its appeal to all generations and already the school is alive with all the wonderful songs from this production open day wednesday 7 march from 17h00 if you have family friends or neighbours with children in grade 7 please invite them to attend our open day where they ll get the opportunity to tour our extensive academic and sporting facilities watch an excerpt from our up-coming major production talk to our teachers and matric councillors and participate in a presentation by the principal bryanston high has been contributing academic sporting and cultural excellence to our local community for nearly 50 years a week ago we had the matric parents evening to give parents valuable information about the challenges of the matric year professor jansen s opinions on matric were often quoted as a guide for any matric parent who wanted the best for their son or daughter we are all concerned about the academic standards and at bryanston we are determined to achieve 100 pass a 65 average for all students 95 exemption rate and over 200 distinctions these have always been our basic aims and most years we come close to achieving them the teachers biggest concern about matric is not the quality of their teaching but the amount of effort and hard work the students are prepared to put in there is no doubt that a direct correlation exist between the marks achieved and the amount of study done by the student the other factor that was emphasized was that absenteeism in the matric year is totally unacceptable it is my theory that 40 of the matric final mark can be achieved by working with the teachers in the classroom and the other 60 is in direct proportion to the amount of effective studying and preparation that is done it is very concerning that the modern y generation child does not have the work ethic or the responsibility to study effectively at home the technologically wired child is hooked on instant gratification and does not have the patience and discipline to extend their minds by reading and studying grease is the word and this year s major production will be held from 22 to 25 may book tickets for your entire family now d robinson cheerleading and swimming two of the sports enjoyed at our school pics by kayla nobrega
