greenacres news camphill community greenacres volume 1 issue 1 by katri halme june 2010 greenagres history if i didn t know better i would say camphill community greenacres was born by accident n fact in the beginning it lydon.she had heard about the work distance the final touch in this was not meant to be cam camphill was doing and enquired urban oasis was the bleating of the i phill at all the old greenacres house on upper kilmacud road in dundrum south county dublin had been more or less idle for a while an order of nuns the religious of christian education had run it previously as a safe boarding house for young girls from the countryside who embarked on studies in the big city whether we would be interested to try out something in dublin curiosity got the better of some of the coworkers in the kilkenny area and we ventured to the big smoke to meet the nuns in early 2002 sheep next door there was dublin s only city farm just behind the hedge the house itself had eleven bedrooms three floors and an annex all the bedrooms were tiny and a bit bleak so we were happy to have the great outdoors to cheer us up the dining and living rooms were better they were spacious and lightfilled due to the big bay windows the best room was the chapel as soon as you entered it you felt peace and calm it had stained glass windows overlooking the garden and one could still feel the many prayers and meditations in the air the camphillers left the meeting with the nuns with an offer of a favourable lease arrangement and a wish not to miss the chance to bring camphill to dublin 11g however there was a problem all the co-workers were already happy and busy in their own communities so who would leave for dublin however the times were changing the nuns were getting older and the girls were not looking for such a degree of safety and supervision with regard to their living arrangements as with any house that is not being lived in the place was slowly falling into disrepair and dampness however while the hungry celtic tiger would have been happy to devour the site for hundreds of new apartments the nuns felt the house still had a social call and role to play one of the sisters rosemary alexander contacted patrick the house had seen better days before being a boarding house the house belonged to a doctor and his family the early days in the 1930s must have been days of glory for the house with endless afternoon teas on the sunny lawn the south facing garden a whole two and half acres of it was more like a private park with beautiful mature trees flowerbeds and a secret vegetable garden which we were able to discover underneath the brambles only after we moved in there was even a tennis court now uneven and overgrown and if you looked over the hedge at the far end of the garden you were able to see the dublin mountains in the far edition in this drama festival culture center flowers and leaves workshop airfield trust sport news interviews and much more the history of greenacres continues follow the story in our next edition.

i have been a fan of chelsea football club for the past two years that is why i love watching them on television they play their home games in london england at stamford bridge stadium a lot of my friends who play on the dundrum football team follow liverpool or manchester untied on the 9th may i went to the goat pub to watch chelsea play against wigan in the final match of the season which was a home game the best part was that i got to watch on a 3d screen so i wore funny glasses to watch the chelsea wons the final match of the season game chelsea had a good chance of winning the trophy because sports and dance my sport life by shane nolan they were just one point ahead of man utd so one tv screen was for man utd vs stoke and another screen was for chelsea vs wigan man utd and chelsea supporters were there to watch the drama unfold the game was nerve wracking at first then chelsea got a free kick in the wigan box from there nicolas anelka got the first of many chelsea goals of the day man utd scored 4 past stoke and chelsea won the game 8 0 carlo ancelotto in his first season as chelsea manger won the league by shane nolan i play five a side football every sunday with dundrum special olympics in ucd i am the goalkeeper for the dundrum rovers and the heroes are the second team the matches take place once a month in places like lusk or greenstones against others teams around the region the two teams play in different divisions but there is this tracksuit that we all wear to represent the club as one last july i got a phone call from one of the coaches to say that i was going to limerick in june to take part in the national games in five a side football not only to represent dundrum football club e very tuesday evening there is line dancing at naoibh olaf gaa club sandyford it starts at 8.00pm and finishes around 1 0 1 5 p m line dancing involves a lot of different movement for example everyone copies each other like an line dancing by shiobhán humphreys in and out movement and sideway directions the movement changes every time and it depends on what the teacher tells us to do at the line dancing place we wear line dancing boots at naoibh olaf we have an excellent instructor named carmel i heard about line dancing in naoibh olaf from a lady named noeleen berry who asked in greenacres if anyone was interested in line dancing so my partner shane and i decided that it would be a nice idea to go there we have been going for roughly a year to line dancing and we really enjoy it 3 greenacresnews

art time flower and leaves workshop d uring the month of may i am working on an art project with the greenacres camphill community which is part of the douglas hyde gallery s outreach program i was delighted when sheena malone asked me to hold these workshops as it is a great opportunity to get to know teach and learn from a new group of people this is significant as it is through these meetings with persons from different backgrounds that we learn about others and ourselves further it is also a chance to try out a new way of making the flowers and leaves i made my first flower and leaves the drama festival installation in 2008 and have since made four different versions each time the work has changed and it will be interesting to see how the work will evolve as the group makes it their own i plan to start the workshops by teaching how the pieces were made in the past the aim is to have this as the starting off point and that new ways of making leaves and flowers will be found by each person it is important that the work will be shown at an event already organised by greenacres as this celebrates the community rather than solely the artist or gallery involved by veronica forsgren biography veronica forsgren b 1980 sweden born in uppsala sweden i moved to ireland in 1999 and began studying art at ballyfermot college of further education in 2002 and graduated from national college of art and design with a joint honours ba in irish art history and sculpture in 2007 my work has been exhibited in various locations in ireland northern ireland wales and italy works are held in private collections in ireland england u.s.a and sweden.i am currently undertaking a ma course at iadt, dublin it s that time of year again and we are getting ready for our annual performance in airfield gardens w e have some new people in the group this year as well as the usual suspects and together we have been working hard to bring our own style of inclusive theatre to the stage the talented mischa o mahony is bringing her musical talents to the play again this year and we hope to thrill you with our musical numbers we have also moved our class from st teresa s in blackrock to the lab in foley st in dublin s city center and we are now called rhythm room this year the play is an interactive musical for kids and like 4 greenacresnews minded adults it s called tea the action takes place i n tina s tea shop where the audience are the customers the deadly duo thieving thelma and jackson brown are up to no good and the singing detective is on the look out for brave and fearless young recruits to help him catch them come and join us in airfield house on the 5th of june performances are on at 11.30 and 2pm places are limited so come early tea takes place as part of the camphill greenacres family festival.the festival is on from 11am 4.30pm there will be lots of fun games for all the family as well dressing up and face painting nicola kealy rhythmroom.

the camphill dublin culture center initiative bruder by noel camphill community greenacres is launching its plans to create a culture center in dublin s ince becoming established in dublin camphill has been endeavoring to make a wide range of cultural and artistic activities available to a broad spectrum of people this has gone far beyond the people living and working at greenacres indeed over the last few years we have foundthatactivitiesthatwehave begun at greenacres have had to moveelsewhereorstopaltogether because they could no longer be accommodated in our limited socialspace.inthefirstplacewe had imagined building a hall or community social space for our own use however in keeping with the changing times when we looked at our broader social agenda to become more active in wider society we realised that it wouldbepreferabletocreateapubliccenterforcultureandthearts -arts and crafts workshops this could include traditional day prgrammes like we already run public lessons and the possibility to have an open-access drop-in type space -exhibitions affording the opportunity for people to display their creations -seminars workshops and talks expanding the activities that already take place in greenacres and making the facility available to other groups -movement workshops such as yoga creative dance and eurythmy pe rformance space for drama we envisage a number of potential activities happening in the center these include the photo shows a mock-up of how these activities might be combined in a center all of these activities have in common an aim to promote participation and inclusion through community empowerment the culture center will be a genuine social enterprise providing work and social activities for people and a shopfront for camphill in ireland realising the dream w e propose to create an initiative group to oversee all aspects of the project a number of individuals have been approached and are very receptive to the idea some of these people will be asked to be on the initiative group others will be called on for advice and assistance as needed an initial step will be to find a suitable premises or piece of land and to convert this or build new to suit our purposes the location for the center should ideally be with in the stillorgan/dundrum locality so that it remains integrated with the lifesharing homes in the same neighbourhood there is no doubt that a fundraising drive will be needed to bring this vision into reality however given the current state of the property market finding a suitable premises might be as much about imaginative ideas as about purchasing on the open market we would be very glad to hear from any of you that have ideas that we can pursue and music -cafe/shop as a meeting place an income generator and a source of healthy organic local fairtrade produce -meeting place for our own use for camphill in ireland and for likeminded groups 5 greenacresnews
