approaching for several resident associations opposed to a six-storey development at 1960-1962 queen st e generally referred to as the `lick s development since the proposed building would take the place of the burger restaurant at queen and kenilworth the plans for 1960-1962 have been filed with the city s planning office and the zoning by-law amendment request will be heard by toronto and east york community council on tuesday may 15 the same community council meeting will consider a zoning by-law amendment for a proposal to build 30 semidetached and one detached houses on a property mounted unit officer joe da silva cautions a taxi driver for not stopping completely at a red light at coxwell and danforth on april 26 toronto police divisions 54 and 55 along with the mounted unit kicked off operation `intersection look out which targets drivers stopping improperly at red lights and failing to yield to pedestrians and bicycles cyclists are also being stopped by officers for violations the enforcement blitz occurred on danforth from victoria park to broadview city looks at building new ground inside by jon muldoon toronto city council recently passed a motion calling for an environmental assessment ea of possible new landforms on the city s waterfront the multiple projects in the ea would have the goals of building up land that will help improve water quality at sunnyside beach in the west end near the mouth of the humber river as well as building up land south of the ashbridges bay treatment plant abtp that will be used for a high-rate treatment facility for combined sewer overflows a stormwater wetland and land mass for projects by other parties with plans for the waterfront toronto water general manager lou di geronimo admitted most of the components of the ashbridges plan have already been looked at as parts of several previous plans all of those have been through different environmental assessments what we didn t complete was a more detailed environmental assessment on filling out that entire water lot he said here s an opportunity to take into account everything that s been looked at over the last few years the requested ea will be spearheaded by the toronto region conservation authority and funded by toronto water said di geronimo the plan will look to take advantage of a large amount of clean fill being generated by several toronto water projects as well as by other city infrastructure including ttc construction a triple bottom line approach is used in the ea process he said including the environmental social and financial implications of building a large land mass on the waterfront an ambitious plan for a city-wide park known as lake ontario park had called for a walking path connecting the leslie street spit with ashbridges bay park the land mass for the stormwater ponds and new treatment facility would also provide the opportunity to build that pathway at the same time the twinning of the coxwell sewer plans to deal with sewer overflows into the coatsworth cut and plans for a tunnel to deal with overflows in the don river will also all feed into the new facilities at abtp this is essentially the culmination of three or four different studies said di geronimo the abtp portion of the larger study is independent from the humber bay plan which has seen more attention due to the fact that a number of artificial islands may be created running into the lake from the river mouth we re just looking at the fact that both of them require lake infilling and landforms so it s the perfect opportunity to go forward as one ea said di geronimo work will begin in 2013 on the study he said that it will likely take several years of study and public consultation before any physical work begins 2016 would be the earliest any construction might begin there s a number of things that could slow it up but as we always said this is a long-term proposition said di geronimo roller derby crashes into east end see 6 beach metro news tuesday may 1 2012 celebrating 40 years serving the beach in my opinion good things really do grow in ontario with climate change upon us we have yet another reason to support our amazing ontario farmers thanks to the winter that wasn t this year maple syrup production has hit an all time low without snow cover there is added stress for overwintering crops like garlic ground water levels cannot be replenished to the regular healthy levels for the new growing season warmer and shorter winters also mean more harmful insects fungi weeds and other pests resulting in increased control costs for farmers that s the bad news the good news is that we have an array of farmers markets across the city to support see tfmn.ca we are even fortunate to have two spectacular markets in our ward east lynn park market my-market.ca is located amidst the rolling toboggan hill and glorious trees on the south side of danforth just west of woodbine it was started by four go getter moms in 2007 east lynn park market helped to kickstart the transformation of this section of the `danny the danforth east community association danfortheastcommunityassociation.com played an integral part in backing the market spreading the word and recruiting volunteers this is the only market in the city where farmers are fed by the community whose mantra is `feed the people who feed us there is something for everyone at east lynn face painting wading pool and playground buskers entertainers festivals a movie night people in vegetable costumes not me anymore community groups promoting their programs bike tuneups free samples friendly farmers volunteers high school kids getting their community services hours you name it the organizers have even hosted local schools for educational field trips so children can truly learn where their food actually comes from east lynn is a most exciting community hub on thursdays mary-margaret mcmahon ward 32 councillor the farmers are all almost within 100 miles of toronto monkton bakery is the furthest away with a 2.5 hour commute this is the farmer who grows her own wheat mills it into flour and bakes her own bread a modern day little red hen it is good for all of us to spend time speaking to farmers and hearing their stories they never stop working or caring for the planet they truly are salt of the earth people come on out and taste their delicious produce and products at east lynn park farmers market thursdays from 3 7 p.m june 7 to oct 25 our newest farmers market is leslieville market leslievillemarket.com don t let the name fool you as this terrific market is located in jonathon ashbridges park west of coxwell on eastern one motivated local foodie janaki hadida spearheaded this idea she gained a following of uber-talented and passionate volunteers along the way and together they have transformed this quiet park off the beaten path into another community hub on sundays i call this one the gypsy market as anything goes local restaurants and cafes are whipping up crepes serving coffee and offering other delectable treats local farmers are energetically describing their crops freshly picked that morning volunteers are running around organizing the kids table printing the day s events on the huge blackboard welcoming shoppers and buskers serenade you on your shopping experience an energetic wholistic nutritionist teaches kids about healthy eating some days you can even get a massage from a local business vegetables and serenity what more could you ask for though the leslieville market closes in october there is still opportunity to eat local through the winter the winter market mix offers three sizes of veggie boxes which are ordered in advance and then picked up at le papillon on the park on sundays between 9 a.m and 1 p.m november through may on super bowl sunday market organizers and le papillon hosted their own `souper bowl whipping up 1,000 litres of french onion soup as a funky fundraiser for their market leslieville farmers market runs sundays from 9 a.m to 2 p.m june 3 to oct 28 since we have lost 10,000 small family farms in the past 10 years let s put all our efforts robins behave with this much aggression the book a guide to bird behaviour volume 1 by donald w stokes a highly respected naturalist states territoriality in robins is not as clear-cut as it is in many other species for the territory is not always defended against other robins and many times an intruder prevails over an owner the main behaviours which robins use to defend their territory according to this book are running towards another robin lifting its tail while facing an opponent crouching and taking short runs towards another bird there is no mention whatsoever of them hitting one another with their wings beaks and feet the explanation of this new behaviour i would think is that the robins are reacting to one or more threats to their survival think of it robins like trees what condition are the trees now in with the human intrusion of sulphur dioxide from cars robins like lawns how secure are they if the lawns are replaced by bulldozers and ugly big buildings robins like worms how many worms are there if driveways and patios do not have holes in them to retain moisture in what lawns are left the first earth day was inspired by rachel carson s book silent spring in which she described what it would be like if we could not hear the robins sing in the spring at the time the threat to the robins survival was ddt another humanmade poison ddt was banned and the robins have replenished their numbers however the new threats to their survival must be interpreted as a `canary in the mine for human survival just as ddt became a threat to humans other species in the beach behave in destructive ways if they are threatened too if the squirrels are subjected to construction noise it hurts their ears and they start biting off branches of leaves and let them fall to the ground the grackles anxiously bite off unripe acorns which they are not going to eat if the human assault on nature continues humans will become more aggressive too and they will fight each other rather than live in peace take heed and listen to what nature is telling us lorna houston norway avenue kennedy responds to a capella critics re janice geropoulos letter letters to the editor april 17 2012 you are absolutely right i should lead by example and i apologize for not doing so when i was recently interviewed i have since uploaded a video on you tube showing me and my husband singing o canada this was a good lesson for me as i ask our students to sing o canada a cappella in our schools when i won t do it myself i realize the fear of singing alone can be daunting i felt it that day however the motion that passed requested that our students sing the national anthem as a group and without musical accompaniment in their morning exercises it is unfortunate that some comments that i have made during interviews have been taken out of context and reprinted in a negative way i regret that this has happened really what i am trying to do is to help create an environment that encourages civic pride that s all cont d on page 35

marathon in half a decade by phil lameira he s not forrest gump by any stretch of the imagination but local marathoner dave emilio sure enjoys his long distance runs as he has for the past six years emilio who now has 27 marathons under his belt says that his obsession with running began in 2006 after realizing how out of shape he was at the age of 37 having been an active youth emilio lost interest in exercising in his midtwenties as he worked at and then owned the chopping block the popular butcher shop on queen street he later became a web developer at a downtown firm and sitting behind a desk all day sure didn t help his health instead of getting into drugs me and my co-workers got into junk food he joked and then one day the elevator at work broke down and for about a week we had to walk up five flights of stairs it was at that time that i realized how out of shape i was said emilio who then weighed over 240 lbs and was still smoking if i want to see the kids graduate or get married i better do something said emilio who has three children and so it began he kicked the smoking habit to the curb and started running with his neighbour guy heritage who pushed him to continue through the initial struggles it was awful i hated it said emilio recalling his first few 4k runs which had many walking breaks but with reassurance from heritage that all the pains and aches would go away if he persisted emilio pushed on and was eventually running the entire stretch with no breaks heritage told emilio he should sign up for a race although at the time he thought only professional hardcore runners participated in races that was how emilio ran his first half-marathon many runners have often said that running is an addiction and even though emilio didn t quite enjoy the aftermath of his first race within a week he signed up for a full marathon something that he had always dreamed of doing so emilio ran his first marathon the ottawa marathon to celebrate it i run it every year and will be there again at the end of may he said emilio lost 50 lbs in the first year of running and he hasn t looked back since his competitive instinct took over and he started switching gears from weight loss to improving his form and speed every time i beat my own time i would train harder to beat it again now witch hazel and maple leaf viburnum shrubs it also shelters and with my peers emilio first qualified for the boston marathon in 2009 my first boston was quite a thrill because it is the holy grail of all marathons which many runners hope to qualify for he said he explained how the city of boston comes alive for the event with hundreds of people flooding the streets wearing running gear talking strategies and just having a great time one of his most memorable moments was running past the schools and seeing all the students lining the streets and cheering the runners on you feel very honoured to be there because you know that it s by qualifying only and that you ve earned your spot there he said his time that year was well off his qualifying time because of an injury he suffered while training this year he finished with a time of 4:06:46 while running in 32°c weather which affected most of the racers including last year s winner who dropped out his best marathon time is 3:18:00 achieved in 2010 at the toronto marathon emilio doesn t travel to boston alone these days two of his children sarah and cam as well as his wife anita all participated in the boston 5k run which took place the day before the big event sarah 18 finished first in the under 19 division with a time of 18:53 while cam 11 finished seventh in the under 14 division with a time of 19:50 emilio s other son josh 23 is not a runner due to back problems in 2010 emilio started the toronto beaches runners club which has grown from its initial membership of 15 to over 150 today the group trains regularly and about half of its members are marathoners themselves he hopes to get more youth involved in long distance running and start a coaching program within the club it would be great to have kids join so they can learn to run properly and have fun he said emilio now runs about 120 km a week as he trains for his next marathon in ottawa during off-peak periods he will run 70 to 80 km a week his next milestone the 100 km ultra marathon on june 23 in niagara-on-thelake which he recently signed up for and so emilio will keep running forever 5 minutes 5 questions by bill maclean m artin gladstone is a lawyer here in the beach and a descriptors of perfume exotic flowers and tropical fruit aromatic grape varieties are fascinating and provide some flavourful and interesting sipping for consumers some are outright aromatic like gewurztraminer moschofilero muscat and torontes occasionally these are so pretty you might be tempted to dab a little behind your ears others like viognier pinot gris and riesling walk the line and often exhibit bold fragrant aromatics the king of blatantly aromatic whites has to be gewurztraminer probably most noted from the alsace region of northwest france it is now produced in many cool climate viticultural regions around the world this varietal is a complex little number as it often bounces back and forth between perfume and spice lychee rose petal white peach and tropical fruit are its fragrant calling cards however a savory spiciness is common in many models occasionally it displays some peppery notes and nuances of smoke stylistically it ranges from bone dry to very sweet including amazing icewine moschofilero is a white greek varietal hailing from the peloponnese part of the country a little like muscat but drier and lighter it displays lovely floral aromas of violets roses and citrus fruit with hints of spice unfortunately there s not much of it in north america but if the greeks have anything to do with it that may change down the road muscat is a fascinating celebrating 40 years serving the beach tuesday may 1 2012 beach metro news 13 money life and law refurbished electronics a smarter way to save money re you one of those people who have to buy the latest jan maclean high-tech gadget even though you bought the prethe penny vious generation model just last year then you are not much interested in saver saving money on electronics if on the other hand you re like me you have issues keeping up with the latest electronic gadgetry these things always cost a fortune when they first hit the market if you can be patient your patience will save you money take televisions for example my husband had to have a new hd compatible flat screen 1080p television it cost nearly $2,500 at the time today you can find the same thing for $299 another way to save on electronics is by buying a refurbished product according to best buy refurbished electronics go through the same testing and approval processes that new units go through we are all conditioned these days that it is friendly to the environment when we recycle and reuse i like that it is not just referred to as `being cheap my first venture into the refurbished market came years ago when i went looking for an ipod nano for my son the nano had just come out and he wanted one for christmas being the dutiful mother that i am i bought the new highpriced item for him and even had it engraved to possibly help protect it from theft hmmmmm didn t work it was stolen from his car along with speakers golf clubs and other items most were replaced through insurance but the ipod was the deductible cost as another christmas approached i couldn t bring myself to pay full price for an item i had already purchased once before so i checked the apple refur a bished website store.apple.com/ca/browse/home/specialdeals there i was able to purchase the same ipod nano minus the engraving for almost half of the original price the `apple certified good as new products are tested and include a one-year warranty i am happy to say he is still using that same ipod eight years later having had such a good experience i have ventured on to future shop and best buy at the future shop website the refurbished items can be found under `clearance and online at best buy they are listed under `special offers both of these sites offer the option to add an item to a price watch the company will send you an email if the item you are interested in has had a further reduction in price i used this to purchase a kobo e-reader for my husband we had bought a kobo with wi-fi and i was enjoying it but it became apparent that some of the books i had loaded my husband wanted to read but i wasn t willing to give up `my kobo for the time it would take him to read the book i also realized he wouldn t need the wi-fi necessarily if he just downloaded the books i already bought and loaded onto our computer i looked up a first-generation kobo the one without wi-fi on the best buy refurbished site found one for $69.99 and added it to the price watch when it was reduced to $49.99 i bought it researching for this article i noticed that the refurbished kobo with wi-fi is now available for $69.99 i also purchased an hp netbook about four years ago from the best buy refurbished site it only cost $189 and has worked well since i have had no issues with it being refur bished especially since it was significantly lower than netbooks were selling for new at the time my advice is not to be afraid of refurbished but buy from a reputable dealer that will back the product or offer you a warranty you can get lemons even when you are buying new buying a refurbished product will save you money and help the environment that has to make you feel good a biblical view of the planet on earth day by harry klassen open doors a glimpse into beach houses of worship w hat is one to say regarding the care for our good earth the judeochristian account of creation does not set forth a scientific understanding of how the world began but rather points to why it exists at all at the end of the first creation account in genesis 1:31 we hear the words and it was very good this pronouncement indicates an evaluative comment by god assessing the reality of everything that had been made in the second account of creation probably more ancient than the first account genesis 2:4 we encounter the fascinating story of the creation of humanity in the garden the earth creature adam is told to till and care for the garden a clear invitation to stewardship of the earth and all that is in it when the partner joins him she is to share in the care for the garden what this all means for us today should be clear as co-creators with god we have the capacity to creatively utilize the resources of this good earth for the benefit of all unfortunately the human tendency towards exploitation has superseded the notion of stewardship in the name of economic interests realistically we must face the future without naivety and simplicity that means however confronting the real costs of a polluted world poisoned waterways disappearance of several species global climate change and the like in a throw-away society long term costs are seldom factored into the equation jobs in the oil patch mean more than jobs in the environmental field in our current government s thinking more people need to raise the question is this sound economics the judeo-christian tradition celebrates the goodness of creation and the creator thus it is surprising that so little concern for cre ation seems to emanate from these sources indeed creationists seem to fight about a literal seven day creation rather than focus upon the problems of global warming and issues pertaining to environmental health there are many issues confronting care for the earth admittedly the concept that humanity is to exercise `dominion over the created order genesis 1:28 has been easily misunderstood and led to exploitation of the earth s resources this misreading of the text needs to be corrected clearly we are to exercise dominion as god exercises dominion over us that is with a deep concern for love and justice the earth is the lord s and all that is in it the world and those who live in it psalm 24:1 for those who believe that this is true we need to exercise our stewardship of the earth with great care and compassion we may have to pay a price to correct the imbalance of current conditions who will show us the way there is much to be learned from aboriginal peoples who have always had a closer walk with nature and been more in tune with the earth in the short term we can each do a little with conservation of resources in the long term let us attempt to call our politicians to responsibility for our good earth and all of its resources earth day 2012 has come and gone but the issues remain let us move forward with courage and conviction so that future generations may live to enjoy our good earth god saw all that he had created and it was very good let us not spoil it any longer rev harry klassen is the interim minister at fallingbrook presbyterian church after serving fallingbrook 25 celebrating 40 years serving the beach tuesday may 1 2012 beach metro news 15 pet of the month unleashed wanted happy and alive by marna gale ather round the campfire and i ll tell you the story of porcupine sam the most wanted dog in the wild wild east this boy once hid a generous helpin of hamburger in his best gal s handbag just for safe-keepin now if that don t make you fall to pieces you best settle in for the rest of his tale be warned he s sure to break your achy breaky heart i reckon he might also inspire you to saddle up and head east for the best hoedown this summer has to offer before making his life-saving journey east the gentle-natured chow mix lived in a northern town with any luck he s forgotten those days at 13 years old sampson was seized by authorities from a neglectful owner there were five dogs in total three small breeds and two chow mixes the little ones recovered quickly finding happy new beginnings through the local animal shelter but sampson and his sister were not so lucky they were severely malnourished and ravaged with arthritis worst of all were the quills they d had one heck of an encounter with a porcupine the quills were so deeply embedded in their muzzles they looked like blowfish no doubt they d been suffering for some time surgery was required to remove the quills but sampson s sister had been through too much already she died on the operating table that left sampson who would want this big old dog with the weight of the world on his shoulders catherine of sheba s haven that s who catherine made it her mission to offer a little heaven on earth to chronically and terminally ill dogs after rescuing respect · resourcefulness · responsibility fully accredited montessori program full-day casa 2 years 8 months 5 years elementary grades 1 6 extended childcare extracurricular programs now accepting applications for 2012/13 g an inspirational dog by the name of sheba back in 2006 sheba taught her that nothing says heaven to a dog quite like all-day breakfasts couch privileges and free sniffing expeditions on a three-acre farm north of kingston sampson didn t exactly fit the criteria he was old but not seriously ill as far as catherine knew but his heartwrenching past was qualification enough so catherine drove the five hours north of her heaven on earth this past fall to gather up sampson and his emotional baggage he was just as the shelter staff had described him a big old softy that only looked like a lion the extent of the neglect was hard to bear it became clear that access to fresh water was completely foreign to sampson after catherine caught him drinking frantically from yard puddles she d made the right decision to take him sadly it turned out sampson did have more than the lasting effects of neglect to endure it started with a chronic sneeze sampson would use catherine s sleeve as a tissue but when blood suddenly appeared on her sleeve she raced him to her vet sampson was diagnosed with a nasal tumour such tumours are usually malignant and inoperable it s only a matter of time but for now heaven can wait heaven on earth on the other hand is tugging impatiently at sampson s tail the introduction of homeopathic remedies together with conventional care for his arthritis has brought the happy roar back to this lion sampson loves frolicking in the fields with his new mates and especially enjoys teasing isaiah a 10-year-old beagle with heart disease watching them play together you d never know either was sick sampson has that same playful effect on people he starts his community work as a therapy dog for a local retirement home shortly he also plans to represent the haven at the best hoedown this summer has to offer among the haven s many admirers are the folks at eastern cowboy this whimsical ranch nestled in the rolling hills and valleys of eastern ontario will be hosting its third annual family fun day bbq in support of sheba s haven on june 16th there will be live music pony rides an auction and old-western-style family photos for the taking it s the perfect kick-start to father s day seeing how dad can pretend he s clint eastwood in hang `em high minus the lynchin of course store fronts like the old gulch saloon and the coyote county bank complete the scene keep an eye out for fort fart that s the outhouse and it s for real speaking of shameful things that make you giggle i ll always cherish the day i met sampson it was about a week ago when i introduced myself to what looked like a lion in the backseat of catherine s car we stopped for burgers before paying a visit to eastern cowboy catherine saved her last bite for the lion he ate some of it but decided to deposit the rest in her purse she laughed i laughed and the lion in the backseat he just smiled and wagged his tail to the beat of unconditional love wanted 13-year-old chow mix with the mane of a lion and the heart of a lovesick cowboy goes by `porcupine sam but kinfolk prefer `sampson the heart melter last seen chasing butterflies at sheba s haven www.shebashaven.petfinder.com fixin to melt more hearts at eastern cowboy www.easterncowboy.com on june 16 reward 10
