kia ora koutou it s great to see everyone sliding back so easily in to great learning routines well done kids and thanks mums and dads for helping the process to be so smooth you will notice over the next few weeks we have a large number of new students starting school this week our roll has risen to 175 children with a number of new children we welcome cruz in hillary if you are a new family to our school look out for your invite to a parent induction and welcome session in the next week or so this will be a great time to meet other families and ask all the questions that you have our learning it is exciting to see the learning that is happening in each learning community we are all trying to use the learning that we gained from working with lane clark with so many new children in sheppard the learning focus is based around class and school routines sheppard learners are specifically investigating how they can be proud in their everyday interactions with each other and also in their learning sheppard children are practising these skills while learning early reading writing and maths skills in ngata 2 children have been investigating what a goal is learners have organised some goals into different areas of proud learning these goals are about being open in our learning in ngata 1 our learners have a writing focus using the authorthink process this is a process that helps writers by encouraging them to use a writing planner and publishing framework to begin with ngata 2 learners will be involved in immersion activities which will allow them to explore the key language features of a piece of descriptive writing one of the areas they will be looking carefully at to start with is nouns all of the learners in ngata are focussing on understanding how to read and use task cards and also to complete learning organisers this will ensure that our children can use these skills independently across all curriculum areas ngata 2 will be practising this is in the area of measurement and time and also in their writing time hillary learners are focusing on narrative text in particular figurative language using descriptive language learners will be immersed in activities to build their initial knowledge and then will be working through the thinkitgreat process through this process learners will deconstruct and investigate pieces of writing with the aim of understanding the particular structural and language features of narrative text learners will be sharing their writing with others critiquing and learning to edit i am excited to see the writing that results hillary learners also have a science focus this term and will be investigating astronomical things they will be specifically learning about the solar system and the sun and moon hopefully we have some clear nights coming up so that families can do some moon and star gazing student news for those of you that go onto our school website regularly either for the usual updates to read our newsletters or to go into the login section of the learning system don t forget to check out the student news section this is written by our media team who are practising writing like journalists i think they are writing really well you will also notice that we have attached a new feature a cluster map you will see on the map where in the world people are reading our website if you click on the map it enlarges the visual and gives you more detail road safety while out on duty in the morning and afternoons i have noticed a couple of practices that are not safe i need your help it is great to see so many parents using the manned crossing even when cars are parked straight across the road thank you for being great role models to your children when they are not with you children will typically follow the routines you have set while you have been with them modelling the correct place to cross is very important pick up your children from the drop and go area but make sure that you are not on the crossing or the middle of the road and that you have pulled into the area fully or found a park it is great to see so many parents biking and scooting to school with their children please remember to model good helmet wearing when with them this means your helmet is on and buckled up too we now have three potential crossing places for children the roundabout our crossing and the new one by the waterways in the future golden sands drive is going to be very busy we will only be manning the one crossing out the front of the school and would like parents to model using it where possible thank you for your help with keeping our children safe.
