total stranger 2012 acrylic and oil on canvas 44 x 54 inches stanzie tooth surfacing stanzie tooth paints sheltered glades that are more akin to manet s garden than the gritty urban environment toronto where they are created primarily landscape in genre they incorporate the freshness of the outside with a free and easy handling of paint surfacing paintings and paper works as lush as a blousy spring adds bloom to the season there is a similarity to watteau s palette charm and grace in the paper pieces tooth uses teal magenta perse and the rare thalos colours that veer to the more refined supernal shades of the primaries as if conjuring the better side of life like veronese s handling of fabrics tooth initiates shifts in the hues creating folds in the landscape just as veronese s nuances in colouring cast light at the high points and shadows into the recesses tooth s vistas shimmer like silk are as detailed as lace and opulent as brocade although historical association is

wilderness tips #2 2012 abundant tooth s colouring is as contemporary as this year s fashion colour forecast her palette has an influence that provides a seat to thoughts a respite from the confusion of urban clash there is an other-worldliness to these pieces as if tooth has been immersed in tolkein or hans christian anderson and it has caused overtones of myth and magic which has in turn elevated basic earthiness to a land of exquisite possibilities a kingdom of greater promise when it is copasetic to interrupt the fecundity tooth peoples these bucolic settings with vague figures coming going or sinking into the fronds with relaxed simpatico there is a fallacious quality to these tableaux as if the whole story is not being divulged as if this is a visual rumour rather than a documented visual fact there is passion in the bushes copulation upon leafy beds with the shadows making spotted sport of the bodies these are fertile paintings they are richly invested in emotion and brim with growth as if pregnant answers to fervent orisons for fertility in blue in green the figures seem suspended in motions that have action implied yet the tension between the figures is moody a dark body couchant perhaps on the bank of a stream watches a nude the center of the space is empty of objects but filled with anticipation as if there is a charge passing between the two humans these are scenes where fulfillment seems immanent purgatorial and pungent stanzie tooth gives clues but doesn t tell secrets her confidentiality is intact her relationship to her subject trustworthy and because she is secure in her role she is able to sing of her ardour without naming her betrothed julie oakes 2012 opposite blue in green 2012 acrylic and oil on canvas 50 x 60 inches
