daily mountain eagle jasper ala thurs april 26 2012 www.mountaineagle.com-a3 young heart patient taken from hospital found safe st louis ap a 5year-old boy in need of a heart transplant was found safe with his father and paternal grandmother at a motel near chicago early wednesday hours after his father allegedly abducted him from a st louis hospital where he was being treated illinois state police caught up with the three at a motel in alsip a suburb south of chicago at about 3 a.m and sent the boy porter stone to a hospital although he appeared to be fine when he was taken he had as little as a day s worth of medication in his portable iv st louis children s hospital said jeffrey stone and his mother rhonda marie matthews both of hercules calif were arrested and were being held wednesday in the alsip jail on $1 million bond each alsip police said in a statement st louis prosecutors charged them both with kidnapping interfering with custody and endangering the welfare of a child jeffrey stone s sister heather minton also was arrested but was not charged alsip police said it was not immediately clear wednesday if porter had been returned to his mother who is in the process of divorcing jeffrey stone in tarrant county texas according to the st louis circuit attorney s office the texas court awarded her custody of her son in december porter was hospitalized friday for evaluation for a heart transplant and was discharged about 3:50 p.m monday hospital spokeswoman jackie ferman-grothe said jeffrey stone took the boy with him purportedly to get a prescription filled while the mother was getting the car ferman-grothe said the father walked out with the boy when they didn t return the mother contacted police jeffrey stone 33 called and texted his estranged wife several times to taunt her st louis police officer cole wrote in a probable cause statement he called tiffany stone names told her where he had their son and refused to let her speak to the boy she said porter appeared to be healthy until a few months ago when he went to the hospital with flu-like symptoms he was eventually diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy said dr charlie canter medical director of st louis children s hospital s heart failure program canter said that in patients with the condition the heart becomes weakened and enlarged and can no longer pump blood efficiently the cardiomyopathy association said it affects people of all ages and is mostly inherited though canter said porter had no family history by the way he presented it seemed possible he had an infection of the heart canter said that was initially good news because some patients can be treated with oral medication but porter s condition worsened and he required iv medication canter said in recent weeks even the iv medication wasn t working well prompting the need to add him to the heart transplant list there s still a chance he could recover canter said but we have to prepare for the worst and the worst is he will not recover and will continue to deteriorate canter said children mad cow case in california found in usda testing hanford calif ap the discovery of mad cow disease in a dead dairy cow came soon after it arrived at a nondescript building in the heart of california s dairy country the finding announced tuesday is the first new case of the disease in the u.s since 2006 and the fourth ever discovered in the country the test was performed when the animal was brought to the building a transfer facility for a processing plant near hanford the cow had died at one of the region s hundreds of dairies a plant official said the cow hadn t exhibited outward symptoms of the disease unsteadiness incoordination a drastic change in behavior or low milk production when the animal arrived at the facility with a truckload of other dead cows on april 18 it met criteria for government testing older than 30 months and a fresh corpse we randomly pick a number of samples throughout the year and this just happened to be one that we randomly sampled baker commodities executive vice president dennis luckey said it showed no signs of disease the samples went to the food safety lab at the university of california davis by april 19 markers indicated the cow could have bovine spongiform encephalopathy bse a disease that is fatal to cows and can cause a deadly human brain disease in people who eat tainted meat it was sent to an agriculture department lab in iowa for further testing on tuesday federal agriculture officials announced the findings the animal had atypical bse that means it didn t get the disease from eating infected cattle feed said john clifford the agriculture department s chief veterinary officer it was just a random mutation that can happen every once in a great while in an animal said bruce akey director of the new york state veterinary diagnostic laboratory at cornell university random mutations go on in nature all the time ap photo this image provided by the national center for missing and exploited children shows porter stone 5 porter s age typically have to wait several months for a donor heart to become available if the transplant occurs and is successful the new heart typically lasts 15 to 16 years if that heart fails the patient can go back on a transplant waiting list assuming his health is otherwise strong enough for a transplant canter said porter had 24 to 48 hours of medicine with him when he left the hospital once that ran out he would most likely have developed flu-like symptoms though he would not likely have been in immediate danger of dying the doctor said jack bryant mclemore jack bryant mclemore is celebrating his first birthday today april 26 2012 he is the son of brian and rachel mclemore of jasper impassively jotting down notes as pope laid out how he allegedly ratcheted up the threats with information he d collected including a photograph he s accused of taking after driving from his dubuque iowa home to the suburban chicago house of a secretary for one of the advisers do you know who lives there pope said tomkins wrote in a letter that included the photograph i do prosecutors allege tomkins sent letters from 2005 until 2007 that threatened to kill those who received them their families and neighbors unless they took action to raise the stock prices of 3com corp and navarre corp in which tomkins had invested they allege he mailed the pipe bombs from a suburban connection with a crime of violence pope acknowledged tomkins left no fingerprints on any of the letters or bombs at least one letter said the sender had been careful not to leave a fingerprint or any dna that could link him his plot but searches of tomkins home his computer and two storage lockers revealed drafts of threatening letters and bomb-making materials that matched those used in two pipe bombs pope said he also said investigators found financial records showing tomkins had purchased stock in the two companies he wanted his victims to also invest in so that the stock price would rise and he told jurors investigators found evidence of the photograph of the suburban chicago house on tomkins computer he tried to delete it but he couldn t pope told jurors tomkins has been in custody since his arrest in 2007 on his way to dubuque the trial is expected to last about two weeks thursday 4-26-12 5-8pm w makes it unlikely but not impossible that any measure would be approved by that chamber montgomery democrat rep joe hubbard has two bills to increase the cost of cigarettes one of them would create what he called a $1 user fee rather than a tax the revenue from that would go toward medicaid which took cuts in the budget passed by the house we have a $238 million expenditure out of the medicaid budget every year that goes to pay for smoking related illness hubbard said we re asking the class of alabama citizens that incur that cost we re asking them to pay $1 as a user fee to go to medicaid to offset that cost legislative staff estimates the state would receive an extra $227.5 million each year if the cost of cigarettes was increased by $1 the house voted 78-7 tuesday to pass the bill arizona s tough immigration law that require police to check the legal status of people they stop for other reasons but the fate of other provisions that make arizona state crimes out of immigration violations was unclear in the court s final argument of the term the latest clash between states and the administration turns on the extent of individual states roles in dealing with the nation s 11 million illegal immigrants immigration policy is essentially under the federal government s control but a halfdozen republican-dominated states have passed their own restrictions out of frustration with what they call washington s inaction to combat an illegal flood parts of laws adopted by alabama georgia indiana south carolina and utah also are on hold pending the high court s decision civil rights groups say the arizona law and those in some other states encourage racial profiling and ethnic stereotyping and debate over such laws could have an impact on this fall s elections more than 200 protesters gathered outside the court most of them opposed to the arizona law however in an unusual comment chief justice john roberts made clear at the outset of the administration s argument wednesday that the court was looking only at state-versus-federal power not the civil rights concerns that already are the subject of other lawsuits so this is not a case about ethnic profiling roberts said federal authorities it has someone in custody who may be in the u.s illegally it seems to me that the federal government just doesn t want to know who s here illegally and who s not roberts said verrilli did not mention wednesday that the administration has deported nearly 400,000 people a year far more than previous administrations although the information was included in written submissions to the court the other provisions that have been put on hold by lower federal courts make it a state crime for immigrants not to have registration papers and for illegal immigrants to seek work or hold jobs arizona s republican gov jan brewer who signed the law two years ago was at the court wednesday arguing for arizona paul clement said the state law mirrored federal immigration law and that the state it took action because with its 370mile border with mexico arizona bears a disproportionate share of the costs of illegal immigration penn state to spend $2.5 university announced wednesday that it s retained edelman and la torre communications the firms will be paid about $2.5 million over the next year penn state says the firms will communicate with current and prospective students alumni faculty staff parents and media as well as support the university throughout upcoming litigation penn state incurred about $7.5 million in expenses through the end of february as it deals with the scandal s aftermath most of that tab about $5.3 million was spent on crisis communications and on an internal probe by fbi exdirector louis freeh sandusky has pleaded not guilty to sexually abusing 10 boys over 15 years ap photo arizona gov jan brewer speaks to reporters outside the supreme court in washington wednesday after the court s hearing on arizona made the records check and another provision allowing suspected illegal immigrants to be arrested without warrants part of the arizona law aimed at driving illegal immigrants elsewhere you can see it s not selling very well justice sonia sotomayor told solicitor general donald verrilli jr verrilli tried to convince the justices that they should view the law in its entirety and as inconsistent with federal immigration policy he said the records check would allow the state to engage effectively in mass incarceration of immigrants lacking documentation he said the law embodying arizona s approach of maximum enforcement conflicts with a more nuanced federal immigration policy that seeks to balance national security law enforcement foreign policy human rights and the rights of law-abiding citizens and immigrants but roberts was among those on the court who took issue with verrilli s characterization of the check of immigration status saying the state merely wants to notify marine corps discharges sergeant for facebook posts san diego the marine corps said wednesday it has decided to discharge a sergeant for criticizing president barack obama on facebook the corps said sgt gary stein was exercising his free-speech rights the discharge will mean he loses all benefits a federal judge previously denied a request to block military discharge proceedings against stein who called obama daily mountain eagle thursday april 26 2012 opinion a few months ago someone jokingly asked me where did you get and foster your liberal viewpoint you see when you lean left in the south there are several standard follow-up questions to practically every back political conversation you have as home an example here is by daniel gaddy my best recollection of a conversation i had with a very nice lady a year ago so did you grow up around here she asked yes ma am born and raised in walker county i told her i see well uh are your parents real liberal then not really my mom is actually quite conservative she even used to help cook at the walker county republican party s annual fish fry the lady kept this perplexed look on her face until i finally smiled and said it can happen to even the best of families i had a good laugh at both of the conversations but eventually i started thinking seriously about the subject becoming a liberal whether it is viewed as a taking-the-red-pill type of epiphany or seen as some disease caught in a women s studies course is thought of by both sides as something foreign i m sure it s the same story in more progressive areas too actor stephen baldwin shared an anecdote on the tonight show that i love to repeat to anyone who will listen stephen who at the time had just started voicing his right-leaning ideas told jay leno a story about his brother alec baldwin he said alec brought up a political topic during a family gathering and after a short rant told him something like i know you will disagree with me because you ve all the sudden turned into a conservative stephen told the audience that he replied to his brother i m not a conservative stephen then performed a dead-on impersonation of his brother who looked at him with a tinge of disgust and grumbled we all know you re a conservative sympathizer i can t help but think that the alienation both stephen baldwin feels in hollywood and liberals feel in the south is due in large part to what media researchers call the spiral of silence the theory is simple fearing isolation people will not voice an opinion that opposes the majority then the belief only becomes more marginalized as fewer people speak out and the majority becomes larger and more voracious on monday i was lucky enough to hear birmingham news columnist john archibald speak at the east walker chamber of commerce s annual banquet overall it seemed like the crowd enjoyed his speech he poked fun at larry langford the jefferson county bankruptcy fiasco and talked about his time covering walker county for the a6 editorials supreme court should throw out arizona s immigration law the u.s supreme court has saved one of its highestprofile cases for the last scheduled public hearing of the 2011-2012 term it was scheduled to hear oral arguments today in arizona v united states a dispute over the controversial state immigration law arizona enacted in 2010 lower courts ordered arizona not to enforce four key provisions of the law ruling that they essentially set up a separate state-level system of immigration law and enforcement that conflicts with the national system devised by the executive branch with the authority of congress and the constitution in such situations federal law preempts and invalidates state law the supreme court should affirm the findings of the lower courts arizona s senate bill 1070 became controversial for the likelihood of encouraging racial and ethnic profiling and harassing people solely on the basis of their appearance their accents their apparent economic status or various combinations of all three but possible breaches of civil rights and due process are not before the supreme court instead the justice department has challenged four provisions that most clearly illustrate the conflict between arizona s alternative immigration scheme and the federal system one provision for example requires state and local law enforcement officers to detain anyone they suspect of having entered the country illegally and keep them in custody until their status is determined to be valid a second authorizes law enforcement officers to conduct warrantless searches based on a suspicion that someone may have committed a crime that would be grounds for deportation the third provision being challenged makes it a state crime for a person to be without proof of citizenship government-issued identification or documents affirming authorized immigrant status the fourth makes it a state crime for immigrants to apply for work accept work or even make themselves available for work if their presence in the united states is unauthorized on one hand arizona argues in its brief to the supreme court that its law simply establishes parallel state efforts to enforce federal law and enhances cooperation and communication between state and federal authorities yet in other sections of the brief arizona invokes unrestricted state police power to maintain law and order arizona can t have it both ways contrary to sb 1070 federal law does not criminalize work an immigrant who lacks official authorization to be in the united states is not guilty of a federal crime but he would be guilty of a state criminal offense under sb 1070 more than anything else the federal system allows for discretion in adopting strategies and setting enforcement priorities in response to changing circumstances the arizona system rejects that federal approach entirely and tried to eliminate discretion america s immigration system has many serious problems and long has needed new federal legislation to address them but the system hardly is non-functional a congressional research service report released in january offers a detailed overview the ugly truth is that the republican majority of elected arizona state officials in 2010 decided they didn t like the federal immigration system and decided to create their own they have every right to not like the federal system and to work to change it they have no right to concoct one of their own to supplant it the supreme court should reject arizona s disingenuous arguments the st louis post-dispatch local liberals starting to speak up news when he focused his wit on the republican party however the room grew uncomfortably quiet they want to put the church in the state and the state into women s underwear he said waiting for the laughter silence or at least it was silent until a handful of people started cackling and yes i was one of them though it was a great line i think we laughed a little longer because it s so rare in this county to hear our view come from a microphone i m certainly not saying liberals are silenced or oppressed in any way here in fact if i ve learned one thing it s that most conservatives like to talk politics with liberals rarely is anything accomplished but it s usually fun to debate for a while what i fear though is that there are a lot of people out there that don t express their full opinion for fear of reprisal that or they water down their views or slide them slightly to the right to make them more agreeable to their republican family and friends or they stop voicing their opinion because they don t have the energy to defend it when they re outnumbered by conservatives the more i learn about politics though the more i realize how aggressively misinformed some people are and it s sad to think that someone is keeping silent for fear of offending someone daniel gaddy is a staff reporter for the daily mountain eagle and a walker county native associated press the latest assault on food instinct tells us to fear poison if our ancestors were not cautious about what they put in their mouths they would not have survived long enough to produce us unfortunately a side effect of that cautious impulse is that whenever someone claims that be our some chemical or food ingredient like fat is guest a menace we are by john stossel primed to believe it that makes it easy for government to leap in and play the role of protector but for every study that says x is bad for you another study disagrees how is a layman to decide i used to take consumer activists word for it heck they want to save the world while industry just wants to get rich now i know better the activists want money too and fame to arbitrate it s intuitive to turn to government except government scientists have conflicts too who becomes a regulator except people who want to regulate some come from activist groups that hate industry some come from industry and want to convert their government job into a higher-paying industry job some just want attention they know that saying x will kill you gets more attention than saying that x is probably safe i don t suggest that we ignore the experts and eat like pigs but the scientific question should not overshadow the more fundamental issue who should decide what you can eat you or the state should government decide what we may eat any more than it decides where we live or how long our hair will be the food police claim that they just want to help us make informed choices but that s not all they want to do they try to get government to force us to make healthy choices the moral issue of force versus persuasion applies even if all the progressives ideas about nutrition are correct even if i would be better off eating no fat and salt that would not justify forcing restaurants to stop serving me those things either we live in a free society or we don t it is no coincidence that the push for more food regulation came at a time when congress obsessed about the rising cost of medical care when government pays for your health care it will inevitably be drawn into regulating your personal life first politicians promise to pay then they propose to control you where does it stop if we must control diet to balance the government s budget will the health squad next ban skydiving and extramarital sex how about another try at prohibition government attracts do-gooders and meddlers who believe that as mark twain put it nothing so needs reforming as other people s habits or as twain s spiritual descendant h.l mencken said about puritanism government health officials seem to have the haunting fear that someone somewhere may be happy often the food police strike an innocent pose claiming that they just want to give people information information is good but it s not free mandated calorie signs in restaurants cost money those costs are passed on to consumers and the endless parade of calorie counts and warning labels make us numb to more important warnings like this coffee is scalding hot it s not as if dietary information isn t already available health and diet websites abound talk shows routinely discuss the latest books on diet and nutrition tv diet gurus are celebrities that s enough we have information we don t need government force let the marketplace of diet ideas flourish let claim meet counterclaim but let s not let government put its very heavy thumb on one side of the scale the assumption behind so much of government s policy regarding food and everything else is that everything good should be encouraged by law and everything bad should be discouraged but since everything is arguably helpful or harmful this is a formula for totalitarianism thomas hobbes assumed an all-powerful government was necessary to protect us from violence he called it leviathan but he never imagined leviathan would plan our dinners john stossel is host of stossel on the daily mountain eagle jasper ala thurs april 26 2012 www.mountaineagle.coma7 election 2012 romney moves to coordinate campaign with gop washington ap a day after claiming the title of republican presidential nominee mitt romney moved aggressively wednesday to coordinate with the republican national committee to intensify his fight against president barack obama one-time bitter gop rivals looked to be coalescing behind the former massachusetts governor rnc chairman reince priebus marked the transition wednesday by proclaiming romney the party s presumptive nominee romney s campaign also appointed several senior staff members to work on an informal takeover of the committee s national infrastructure we will ensure that our finance political and communications teams are fully synchronized priebus said i am excited that these two top-notch operations will start to integrate and present a unified team to defeat barack obama at the same time fading republican contender newt gingrich signaled that he would likely follow rick santorum out of the race and called on the gop to unite behind romney aides confirmed that gingrich will leave the race next week and said he was likely to endorse his one-time rival the dramatically shifting landscape comes as romney refocuses his efforts on challenging obama raising money for the battle ahead and reconciling with a divided republican party tonight is the start of a new camdoor fundraisers in two days in new york and new jersey they may be among his final private meetings with donors according to campaign officials who confirmed that romney would begin opening some finance events to reporters as early as next week the officials requested anonymity to discuss internal decisions the move would follow an embarrassing episode in which reporters outside a closed fundraiser in palm beach fla overheard romney sharing previously undisclosed details about his tax plan romney has faced growing calls for transparency in his role as the gop s likely candidate one campaign official said romney would probably begin inviting a small group of reporters into larger fundraisers particularly those in which he makes remarks that s largely the policy obama follows while romney essentially declared the beginning of the general election tuesday night he has been free to focus on obama since santorum suspended his campaign two weeks ago that ended a nasty primary battle that took a heavy financial toll and prevented romney from stockpiling cash to use against his democratic opponent the process of formally integrating his campaign with the rnc had already been under way three romney advisers spent two days at an annual state party gathering in arizona last week to start laying the groundwork for the effort longtime romney confidante ron kaufman also an rnc member organized that effort and will continue to serve in such a role republican operative brian jones a veteran of john mccain s 2008 presidential campaign will take the lead on coordinating between the two entities kevin madden who was romney s spokesman in 2008 will advise the communications team despite gingrich and santorum s apparent shifts it remained unclear whether grass-roots conservatives are ready to embrace romney gingrich and santorum aggressively questioned his conservative credentials during the primaries with santorum at one point declaring romney the worst candidate to face obama but asked tuesday night on cnn if romney was the right guy to represent the republican party santorum said he was romney s success will depend at least in part on his ability to compete financially with obama the republican s campaign had about $10 million in the bank at the end of march according to federal filings obama reported having more than $104 million in his account he d already spent $90 million on the general election romney was eager to turn the political page after tuesday s primary wins in new york pennsylvania connecticut rhode island and delaware ap photo republican presidential candidate and former massachusetts gov mitt romney and wife ann take the stage at an election night rally in manchester n.h tuesday paign romney said tuesday night as he celebrated a sweep of five primaries he blasted obama as a man whose tenure has been marked by false promises and weak leadership in a time of economic struggle the contests were the first since santorum conceded the race and the former pennsylvania senator said he intended to sit down with romney s representatives on wednesday and with romney himself in the next week or two mitt romney is going to be the nominee santorum told cnn and i m going to support the nominee romney was attending fundraisers wednesday and thursday to prepare for what may be the most expensive presidential contest in the history of american politics he exuded confidence tuesday night but faces a 10-to-1 cash disadvantage in a general election matchup against the democratic president romney has at least six closed gingrich to end presidential campaign next week washington ap newt gingrich began taking steps wednesday to shut down his debt-laden white house bid setting the stage to endorse one-time rival mitt romney next week and rally republicans behind their apparent nominee gingrich had a friendly telephone conversation wednesday with romney and had started planning an event where he would throw his support behind the likely nominee gingrich spokesman r.c hammond said the pair agreed to work together to unite conservatives against president barack obama it s clear romney is the nominee and the focus should be on defeating obama we should not focus on defeating ourselves gingrich told disappointed supporters in kings mountain n.c the morning after romney tightened his grip on the nomination by sweeping primary contests in five states gingrich also telephoned republican national committee chairman reince priebus and supporters such as texas gov rick perry in states with upcoming primaries to inform them of the decision he had been hinting at for days gingrich had been under pressure for some time to leave the race and clear a path for romney you have to at some point be honest about what s happening in the real world as opposed to what you would like to have happened he told supporters at a suburban charlotte n.c restaurant gingrich declined to comment when asked about his plans multiple times during the kings mountain stop there are times when the mountain gets bigger than your ability to climb it he said the white house acknowledged that the contest had come down to obama and romney there seems to be a general acknowledgment that the process has moved to that stage press secretary jay carney told reporters traveling with the president as the white house ratchets up its focus on romney gingrich will shift to helping republican candidates across the country paying off more than $4.3 million in campaign debt and rebuilding his reputation among conservatives gingrich s campaign tested conventional wisdom from the beginning could the 68year-old grandfather a politically divisive figure shamed by an ethics probe and subsequent reprimand pushed out of congressional leadership and saddled with marital scandal find acceptance among cultural conservatives his campaign was full of contradictions he pointed to his 20 years as a congressman from georgia including four as house speaker and claimed a political kinship with president ronald reagan yet he also contended to be an outsider and antiestablishment candidate while arguing for a lessintrusive federal government and dramatically lower spending and taxes he promoted programs and initiatives with murky price tags including establishing a colony on the moon and allowing younger workers to have private retirement accounts backed by the government he sought support from cultural conservatives even though he had married three times and committed adultery gingrich s campaign lacked money and organization as it got under way a problem that contributed to his failure to get on the ballot in virginia where he lives observers questioned whether the famously bombastic ex-congressman could maintain the message discipline needed for a successful national campaign within days of his formal announcement on may 11 2011 he ap photo republican presidential candidate and former house speaker newt gingrich speaks in cramerton n.c wednesday provided ample reason to think he could not first gingrich criticized a conservative-backed plan for revamping medicare as promoting radical change and right-wing social engineering drawing an intense backlash from republicans he then grudgingly acknowledged that he and his wife callista had a $500,000 credit account at the jeweler tiffany and co but proclaimed we are very frugal within weeks the couple embarked on a cruise in greece which led to a mass exodus of campaign staff amid grumbling that he wasn t serious enough about his campaign jasper reach everything that we hope to do at one time but we re going to get the biggest bang for our buck like our other projects that we have going it will continue to grow from there said council member johnny rollins the council appointed public works director joe matthews to oversee the miracle field a sports complex for athletes with special needs the project has been budgeted for $330,000 the council voted to reject a $414,000 bid that was received for the project after matthews said it would be more beneficial to bid it out in parts from a1 the council also approved expending additional funds for the southside pool project matthews said the previous low bidder did not have the proper license for construction of new buildings associated with the pool the council voted to reject the contractor s bid and authorized matthews to act as general contractor for the remaining work the original pool project was budgeted for $250,000 also on wednesday the council voted to change the date of its next regular meeting from tuesday may 1 to may 8 obama what s in their personal best interest romney said monday in pennsylvania after announcing his support for an effort obama is pushing to keep the interest rate on federal student loans from doubling in july obama is visiting college campuses in key states this week to rally students around the proposal the president s policies have led to extraordinary statistics when you look at 50 percent of kids coming out college today can t find a job or can t find a job which is consistent with their skills how in the world can you be supporting a president that has led to that kind of economy romney said i think young people will understand that ours is the party of opportunity and jobs while republicans don t anticipate erasing the democrats long-held advantage among the under-30 voter group they would like to trim it enough to help romney win the white house his aides and advisers have been sharpening a message that assails obama for an economy that has young people feeling the pinch too the republican national committee is preparing to launch what it calls the social victory center which promises to turn the facebook accounts of supporters into an outreach arm of the party and romney s five telegenic sons none of them younger than 30 are ready to reprise their roles as campaign surrogates obama has spent the past week casting himself as a defender of the middle class and urging congress to keep the 3.4 percent student loan interest rate from doubling to 6.8 percent in july he rallied students during visits tuesday to college campuses in north carolina and colorado to be followed by a stop in iowa on wednesday obama carried all three states in 2008 and they are considered among several that could help decide november s election when a big chunk of every paycheck goes towards loan debt that s not just tough on you that s not just tough for middle-class families it s not just tough on your parents it s painful for the economy because that money is not going to help businesses grow obama said at the university of north carolina in chapel hill i mean think about the sooner you can start buying a house that s good for the housing industry the sooner you can start up that business that means you re hiring some folks that grows the economy from a1 and this is something michelle and i know about firsthand i just wanted everybody here to understand this is not i didn t just read about this i didn t just get some talking points about this i didn t just get a policy briefing on this michelle and i we ve been in your shoes despite attempts to relate to college audiences by opening up about his and his wife s experiences with student loans polling suggests obama s job approval rating among these voters has declined the 75 percent rating he enjoyed in 2009 the year he took office has dropped to 57 percent according to gallup that opens the door for romney and the republican party consider north carolina obama won it by fewer than 14,000 votes making him the first democrat to carry the state since 1976 rick wiley the rnc s political director said democrats pulled off that victory by registering a boatload of college kids but fast forward four years and those college kids are not going to be there they re not on campuses anymore they re probably under-employed he said cordova assigned to disaster relief efforts in cordova following friday s somber ceremony saturday will be a day of service and fellowship volunteers will gather at the old park at 9 a.m to get their assignments for more than a dozen projects from a1 throughout the community lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m at 2 p.m a memorial tree will be dedicated and the winners of a local essay contest will be read aloud saturday s event will also include live music booths and inflatables dunn as they go the way he did gallivan remembered dunn from when the teen attended a summer studio culinary school at the institute last summer he really stood out there gallivan said his food is really excellent he showed he had been practicing and put in a lot of hard work he s just a real smooth act sides and dunn s sister ani hattaway went to atlanta to watch dunn compete against 11 other young chefs when family and friends got to look at all 12 competitors completed meals hattaway picked out her brother s dish even without his name on it hattaway and dunn work together at black rock bistro in jasper where she has learned his style of preparing food he s got this as far as the presentation hattaway told her mother you could tell the training he had gotten at the black rock had really paid off for him sides said when they saw dunn later however he was dejected because he had not completed part of the assignment his helper had misread the clock and he thought he had more time to finish during the award ceremony however it was dunn s name that was called as winner of the competition he had a look of amazement said sides he had convinced himself that he didn t win i was really shocked said dunn he said he was anxious during the competition, but mostly because he had to wait more than two hours until it was his turn to cook dunn said he does not normally see other cooks as rivals but i m competitive when there s something on the line the competitors each prepared a two-course meal consisting of a shrimp cocktail from a1 sauteed chicken breast with creative garnish rice pilaf and broccoli saute the teens were judged on five technical skills including knife skills safety and sanitation organization cooking techniques and clean-up judges also scored five qualities of the finished dishes including temperature taste texture portion size and presentation dunn is now in the running for a $14,000 scholarship to the institute based on a portfolio he submitted the school will announce the winner of that scholarship in june council some controversy but i believe if we give them a little bit of knowledge about how it s going to be it will work out trayal said scott encouraged trayal to meet with representatives of the cordova zoning and planning commission to further discuss the program he has in mind in other action from the meeting ·the council amended the from a1 ordinance that was recently passed to redraw the city s voting districts ·the council approved a resolution approving municipal water pollution prevention reports for 2010 and 2011 ·scott announced that a pre-bid meeting concerning the stream clean-up project near piggly weekly will be held may 7 at 1 p.m at city hall.

19 26 2012 fed economy growing moderately no policy changes washington ap the federal reserve says the economy is growing moderately while cautioning that risks from europe remain it s holding off on taking any further steps to boost the recovery in a statement after a twoday meeting the fed said wednesday that economic growth should pick up gradually a somewhat brighter view than it offered last time it said the job market has strengthened slightly but that unemployment remains elevated and it pointed to a pickup in inflation but said it should be only temporary the fed stuck with its plan to keep a key short-term interest rate near zero through at least late 2014 it announced no new plans for further bond buying after a current program ends in june but chairman ben bernanke told reporters at a news conference that bond buying or other steps are still an option if the economy should weaken those tools remain very much on the table and we will not hesitate to use them should the economy require additional support bernanke said the fed has pursued two rounds of purchases of treasury bonds and mortgage-backed securities to try to push down long-term interest rates the goal has been to encourage borrowing and spending its decision to leave its policy unchanged had been widely expected and reaction in financial markets was muted was approved on a 9-1 vote of the central bank s key policy panel the federal open market committee composed of fed board members in washington and five regional bank presidents as he has at the past two meetings jeffrey lacker president of the richmond fed opposed the late-2014 target date the statement said lacker didn t think economic conditions warrant a record low rate late for that long fed chairman ben bernanke will meet with reporters later wednesday marking a year since he began holding quarterly news conferences as a way to provide more openness about the fed s decision-making process after their policy meeting in january bernanke and his colleagues had hinted that they were edging closer to a third round of bond buying but since then signs have suggested that the u.s economy has strengthened the fed first set its late 2014 target at the january meeting that target date represented a move from last august when it announced a mid-2013 target for the first fed rate move the fed s benchmark funds rate has been kept near zero since december 2008 that means consumer and business loans tied to that rate have also remained at superlow levels the lower those loan rates the more likely people and companies are to borrow and spend and indexes didn t move much david jones chief economist at dmj advisors said he thinks the fed will keep another round of bond buying as an option through the rest of this year but with the economy slowly improving jones said the fed is unlikely to implement such a program this year critics have expressed concerns that the central bank has raised the risk of higher inflation with its campaign to push rates down as long as it has in a recent opinion piece in fortune magazine shelia bair former chairman of the federal deposit insurance corp argued that the central bank might be creating a bond market bubble similar to the inflation housing bubble the fed should declare victory and not intervene by making further purchases of bonds bair said asked about this criticism bernanke said it s a little premature to declare victory in the fed s drive to stimulate the economy and lower unemployment at the same time bernanke sought to show that he is mindful of the risks of high inflation he said the fed would shape its policy to keep inflation no higher than its target of 2 percent over the long term the fed s decision to keep its current easy credit stance washington in brief company the agency with lead authority to interpret and enforce the nation s employment rights laws said jennifer pizer legal director of the ucla school of law s williams institute on sexual orientation and contractor learned she had undergone a procedure to change her gender from a man to a woman u.s new-home sales off 7 percent in march washington sales of new homes fell in march by the largest amount in more than a year indicating that the u.s housing market remains under strain despite some modest signs of improvement the commerce department said tuesday that sales dropped 7.1 percent in march to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 328,000 units that followed a 7.3 percent increase in sales in february this figure was revised up from an initial estimate that february sales had fallen 1.6 percent the weakness in march could reflect that a warmerthan-normal winter caused sales that normally occur at the start of the spring sales season in march to occur in february instead the median sales price was $234,500 in march down 1 percent from the february price sales of new homes stand at just about half the roughly 700,000-a-year pace that analysts consider evidence of a healthy market with smith for hogs in what has been one of the most tumultuous times in the history of the arkansas razorbacks football athletic director jeff long announced under the that former radar special teams coordinator by w brian hale john l smith would be handed the reins as the successor to the recently fired and disgraced bobby petrino on tuesday it all began with the bizarre motorcycle accident petrino was involved in that led to the discovery of the identity of petrino s passenger 25 year-old jessica dorrell who had been recently hired at petrino s urging from there details on dorrell and petrino s relationship came to light along with petrino s admission that he had lied on a number of incidents involving the accident and his past with the former razorback volleyball player ultimately leading to his firing concluding with smith s hiring so closes that dark chapter and now the razorback nation can happily get back to their dreams of triumphs over lsu and alabama a trip to the sec at being at the helm of a major college program smith has previous stops at idaho utah state louisville and michigan state compiling a 132-86 overall record as a head coach his louisville tenure from 1998 to 2002 saw him depart with a 41-21 record two conference usa championships when the cardinals were c-usa members and an impressive 11-2 mark in 2001 that would put louisville on pace for its prominent breakout under smith s successor bobby petrino at michigan state smith didn t fare too well going 2226 from 2003 to 2006 before the spartans decided not to renew his contract smith began with an 8-5 mark in `03 before things went downhill to the tune of 5-7 5-6 and 4-8 between his stint at michigan state and serving as special teams coordinator at arkansas from 2009 to 2011 smith played the broadcaster s role as many failed coaches do it may have been more suited for him given his affable nature two things popped into mind when looking at smith s track record at louisville and michigan state with the cardinals smith s teams were good at dominating the midmajor teams that conference usa had to offer during that period but had difficulty obtaining victories over elite competition it s doubtful that smith s record at louisville would have looked as good if the cardinals had made the transition to the big east during his tenure instead of petrino s where he would arkansas athletic director jeff long s hiring of john l smith for the next 10 months provided an unconventional and perhaps temporary solution to a problem that came with coach bobby petrino s sudden and scandal-ridden exit smith s return after a five-month absence from the razorbacks also effectively signaled the program is all in for a season many expect to include a national championship run and the razorbacks couldn t be more relieved to have found petrino s replacement in the form of the well-liked and outgoing smith who served as an assistant at the school for the past three seasons i think it s going to go great arkansas running back knile davis said a lot of people look at it differently because they re on the outside looking in they don t necessarily know what s going on behind these doors i think it was a great decision and i m ready to run with it not matter what the result is but i think it s going to be a great result the hiring of the 63-year-old smith who had left to become head coach at his alma mater weber state in december allowed arkansas to keep together a group of assistant coaches the players had lobbied for with long it also allowed for the least amount of transition as possible in the post-petrino era long faced a difficult decision following petrino s firing april 10 after the former coach had admitted to an affair with a woman he later hired as his assistant the timing of the coaching search was one of long s biggest problems with many candidates already well into spring practice with their own teams long also had to balance the current players hopes for the upcoming season with the long-term interests of the program in the end long believed he found the right answer to all his concerns despite some rumblings among fans and pundits that he missed out on a home run hire by choosing smith anytime there is a hire there will be fans that question that hire i get that long said i get that s part of being a fan but the thing i ve been hearing they re excited they believe in this team they believe we have a special year in front of us i think coach smith will win them over time several candidates told long during the search that they would have interest following the season while long said he will consider smith and any other interested arkansas assistant after the season he also included a clause in smith s $875,000 contract that allows him to reassign smith to a non-coaching position at any time the clause would allow long to hire a new head coach before the end of smith s contract right now though long isn t looking quite that far ahead certainly there will be people searching us out and seeking us out as there was prior to my decision long said i ll be receptive to those i ll also be gathering information on my own being the spartans head coach proved to be a stiff challenge as the teams that the cardinals had a tough time beating twice a year were the ones smith had to see each week and he showed he wasn t up to the challenge secondly in the all-too-important world of recruiting smith s classes never ranked higher than 31st the judgment if smith couldn t win at michigan state where successor mark dantoni his young daughters dear are sent to his exabby wife s by abigail van buren home rather than to both his and the exwife s he assumes the sender is sexist and suggests the solution for children with two households is to be sent two invitations as a parent who invites children to my home or to a party i don t feel i should be responsible for their parents communication difficulty often i am not even aware that a child has two households the invitation simply goes home with the child to wherever he or she is that day personally i think modern dad is overly sensitive he needs to realize that no one is deliberately snubbing him or making assumptions about parental roles they are just inviting his kids to things for which he should be grateful did he share his address with the inviter does he make his preference clear to parents when meeting them i believe it s presumptuous to expect someone to send two invitations to the same child and i agree with you abby that dad needs to improve communication with his exwife so he no longer feels he is being prevented from being an active parent regular mom in tennessee dear regular mom a majority of readers agreed that more sharing of information between the girls mother and dad will solve his problem other parents comments dear abby friends acquaintances and professionals should not have to go out of their way to cover all the bases given the number of divorced remarried and otherwise situated families more than a single contact point becomes burdensome for those trying to complete business or issue simple invitations my guess is even though the girls stay with dad he doesn t have relationships with most of their friends parents unless he cultivates these connections with the mothers most likely it is improbable that he will be added to the contact list challenged too in severna park md dear abby i know from organizing school activities that often only one parent supplies an email address to the school and it s usually the mom if modern dad s ex-wife would cooperate by sending him a list of email addresses of those most likely to issue invites he could send out a polite message sharing his contact information with those other parents also if he reaches out to help arrange carpools or organize social outings which is usually a mom job he ll become an added member of the group non-sexist mom in illinois dear abby my son s school sends out a parent directory that includes both my and my ex-husband s email addresses i receive a lot of information including invitations by email and always see my ex s address included on everything as well not having to remind him about parties and school events has taken a huge load off my shoulders maybe dad can suggest his daughters school start a to why the attendance was low at bristol you want to know how to improve the attendance at bristol add another mile to it personally i don t care to watch the short-track races why because it puts a hardship on the drivers who are back in the field if you start way back in the pack you play well to get to the front short tracks aren t an equal opportunity per se i would rather watch races on the big tracks i know if my driver starts back in the pack he has a lot of chances to come to the front if he has a fast pit crew at bristol no matter how good your car is and how proficient your pit crew is if you start way back you ll have a better chance at winning the lottery than getting to the front to me short tracks and road courses are useless w langley mount holly n.c thanks for letting us longest time the only toyota team that has really mattered in nascar has been the one owned by joe gibbs thanks to denny hamlin in terms of actually reaching victory lane it s still the case hamlin won the stp 400 at kansas speedway in one of the gibbs toyotas the victory was hamlin s 19th one of michael waltrip racing s drivers martin truex jr is second in the sprint cup standings he dominated the race but had to settle for second jgr has 95 victories in its history 37 since casting its lot with toyota in 2008 mwr has two victories in terms of victories toyota s success still begins and ends with gibbs and in 2012 to date hamlin hamlin won at the expense of truex who otherwise dominated the race there were times during that race where i kept looking at the `56 truex and thinking that it was so superior to the field hamlin said we needed two kinds of changes and we got both of them hamlin explained that part of the change in the balance of power was due to adjustments by crew chief darian grubb and part was due to a change in weather conditions the sun came out near the end of a blustery kansas day and that s when hamlin s toyota surged and truex s faded according to truex though the chief problem he had was a set of tires not sunshine regardless hamlin became the second driver to win more than once in the season s first eight races he and the reigning champion tony stewart have each won twice you know at the end it s a no-lose situation for me because i m a fan of martin s truex jr i m a fan of michael waltrip racing and they ve really done some great things with that program hamlin said but my job is to win for my guys and really drive as hard as i can to get them those wins because they re so hard to come by now and you have to just do everything you can i knew he truex was driving his heart out as well as i was driving mine it was a good day for toyota because michael waltrip racing and joe gibbs racing have got a bond that s working better and better together obviously with the common engine package and everything so we re starting to see these toyotas start to make a run it s now ram ok there are no longer any dodges in the camping world never won at the track in his home state engine trouble relegated him to 36th place jeff gordon fell to 18th in points after a 21st-place finish bowyer on sunday may 6 2012 kansas city kan it s ok it s understandable dale earnhardt jr doesn t have to be the straw that stirs the hendrick motorsports drink it would be great if he could deliver rick hendrick his suddenly longawaited 200th sprint cup victory but it isn t necessary earnhardt is still happy to be there i think that jimmie johnson and jeff gordon will always carry a certain role in the company that i will probably never achieve just due to their being here so long and having that trust built up with rick hendrick and all the employees and their accomplishments obviously he said i ve never felt that was a disadvantage to me i feel like i have everything they have and i have the resources and the same ability to make everything i can out of the team it pays off in an age in which a handful of teams provide power for most of the starting fields jeff gordon thinks hendrick s engine department is one of the keys behind the team s historic success while i think at times the approach has been questioned on how hendrick goes about things and building their own engines and chassis now you really start to see it pay off gordon said you have been seeing it pay off for probably the last 10 or 12 years if mark martin can do it it sabitoverlookedthatgreg biffle is 42 years old after working his way up biffle never made his first cup start until age 32 asked if he felt some urgency to win the championship this year biffle said i kinds the first of tony stewart s two kansas wins was won on fuel mileage which was uncommon no nonexistent during his early years stewart was once fond of saying he didn t know how to save fuel it was a battle between the driver and the crew chief stewart said the crew chief greg zipadelli is yelling at you every lap to save fuel but you re not slowing down enough and he knows it because he s looking at the stopwatch when you ve got guys behind you you know you don t want to give those spots up in case they happen to make it on fuel so i tried to save as much fuel as i could and still hold
