editorial note 2012 is upon us and as december 21st stalks closer we find people stockpiling bottles of water batteries canned food and wisely plenty of twinkies as the mayan calendar comes to a close this year and the cacophony of prophetic interpretations about the impending apocalypse grows more disordered the egg student design team decided to take advantage of this opportunity with some clever and creative thinking as kevin gross s terrific cover art aptly demonstrates with this being the twelfth volume of rmu s egg it seems only appropriate while most of the attention-getting interpretations surrounding december 21st 2012 involve some gruesome or at least mildly unpleasant end of the world scenarios many of the quieter but far more informed interpretations point out that according to mayan culture december 21st 2012 marks not the end of the world but the end of one cycle and the beginning of a new one a shift as it were of understanding perception and consciousness hence the inquiring subtitle to volume #12 a new beginning seemed appropriate rmu has long been invested in affording its students different opportunities for exploring new beginnings and we have worked hard to see that each volume of egg from 2000 to 2012 and beyond represents our students abilities to develop new ways of understanding themselves and perceiving the world around them we understand the effect of art and the written word to close things down or more importantly open things up every time you sit down to write whether it s on a sheet of paper with pen in hand in a word.doc or an email or a text you stand at the start of something very powerful you ve the potential to make or break a relationship with the person you re writing to to profoundly

the seatbelt s impact a small detail can make a big difference the consequence of not wearing a seatbelt is indirectly proportional to the simplicity of operating it just click-it after a nap during a long drive i awoke as i pulled my seat up completely indifferent to the fact that i had no seatbelt on i felt my eyes heavy the lurid sun burning through the windshield hindered my ability to focus it took me a minute to be able to see what s going on beyond the confines of the car there was a lonely cloud in the bright sky like a little white ship lost in the blue sea fernando smiled and asked me how was your nap i answered with a half smile and a short nod i was groggy and did not feel like articulating a word once my eyes adjusted to the light i was awed by the vivid colors the uphill squiggly single-lane road that followed along the side of the mountain was frightening yet it was so beautiful the dirt of the mountain is ardent ricotta colored only to be upstaged by the calming green of the herbage far down at the ends of the slope of the mountain the man-made squares formed by the agave plantations redecorated nature how long until we get there i asked it should only be 30 more minutes and we will be in tapalpa he quickly replied tapalpa is a small mountain-town in central-western mexico i couldn t wait to get there we have been on the road for a couple of hours now the road seemed desolate however the road was curvy and one cannot see very far ahead the turns are sharp and the declivity is steep about a half of a mile ahead there was a big clunky semitruck struggling to go uphill on the swerving road there was also a small car stuck behind the truck suddenly i felt the car gaining speed i quickly looked at fernando then at the road his intention of passing the semi-truck was obvious the truck was rocio gonzalez 2

the obstacle keeping us from the clear road ahead visibility was limited between the sharp edges of the geographic forms and the wide cargo box it was impossible to see if there was incoming traffic i was a little relieved when i felt the car decelerating as we got closer i thought fernando realized like i did it was too risky to pass i had not finished that thought when the truck signaled with the left blinker that it was safe to pass it the car in front of us went and fernando without hesitation proceeded to pass the truck behind it the other car finally cleared the truck into the open lane we were still a couple of feet from reaching the front of the cabin when another sharp turn revealed an oncoming pick-up truck approaching us at a very fast speed downhill the inadequate horse power of the rental car the road conditions and the impossibly long semi-truck made it for a lethal combination what was only seconds holding my breath aware of what was about to happen felt like minutes i barely had any time to say we are not going to make bang thump everything went into slow motion as i saw the windshield come evincible towards me and i hear another faint thump i felt i was floating as the vehicle spun i banged around like the rock inside a baby s rattle the car came to a halt i looked to my left and reach out for fernando as i reached for his shoulder and felt the soft cotton on his perfectly white shirt i was disrupted by my bloody skinless hand i was momentarily hypnotized by the bright contrast of the intense red staining against the crisp white immediately after i started to feel the warm blood dripping down my forehead and i tasted blood s distinctive metal taste as if i had just taken a bite out of aluminum foil this cannot be happening i kept repeating in my head i could not move i did not want to move i was paralyzed i wanted to reverse time reverse to before i was bleeding from everywhere i should have clicked my seat belt this cannot be happening those were the only thoughts in my head 3

the passenger door would not open and the glass was gone fernando was reaching for me saying come on and let me pull you out i replied by shaking my head no i was thinking that we should not move we should just wait for help to arrive he reached in and pulled me out through the window as if i was a rag doll he then braced me and stood me on the asphalt next to the car i was still in a daze fernando kept talking but his words were not making any sense i just kept thinking i wanted to go back but i can t the wreaking smell of gasoline that was spilled across the road brought me to reality my wounds started to get cold and i could feel the shutting pains there is no going back i finally came to terms with it i am hurt where is the ambulance where is a hospital is there one 4

mind s juvenile eye tyler boyce boom enemies are surrounding the base from all sides get down johnson go down to the command center and contact hq tell them we need an air strike on green smoke and an evac on orange shouted colonel fringe in between firing his automatic ak48 and throwing his designated smoke grenades the ak48 is the best gun on the market conveniently every other enemy has the standard ak47 with no upgrades as they randomly fire in fringe s direction gunshots are flying everywhere grenades explode in the distance and the base barely withstands the constant damage from stray explosions fringe is the last man standing along with johnson protecting the lab crew that his squadron was sent to defend as the scientists recover the data colonel is known for getting out of immeasurable situations but this one is the toughest one yet crouched behind cover he clutches his state of the art weapon with half a clip of ammunition and one grenade waiting to be launched from the second barrel of his gun the airstrike comes and clears out almost every enemy fringe looks up and fires his weapon until he runs out of ammo finishing off the remaining enemies he launches his last grenade only to be surprised by a touch to the back of the head from an enemy soldier s pistol `fringe knows the exact weapon he turns around with an expected smirk on his face only to find the enemy general johnson and a small task force of five elite soldiers behind him holding the lab crew hostage the pressure fringe is under could crush solid rock `but this is nothing compared to yesterday he thinks to himself he brushes the gravel off of his shoulder and then he grabs the wrist of the soldier and disarms him he takes the gun and points it at the man who is now on his knees in 5

blinding pain from the wrist lock he is in the trigger is halfway pulled when one of the elite soldiers charges him with a sword not a blink goes by and the soldier falls to the ground with a hole through the middle of his forehead fringe s gun is at the soldier s again head with a little smoke rising from the tip of the barrel he picks up the fallen enemy s sword and sheaths it on the right side of his belt immediately he looks at the general waiting for him to say something but no words are exchanged he executes the man on his knees and the body hits the ground and suddenly out of fear johnson flees raising the weapon in his hand fringe fires but is interrupted by a downward slice from the general s sword in the midst of tripping the traitor begins to bleed from the heel the general backs up and orders the three remaining soldiers to attack impatiently honoring fighting etiquette fringe tosses his pistol and draws his sword unable to resist a sword fight due to the general appeal it has over the exchange of bullets fringe sets his feet he looks up as the three elite soldiers suddenly surround him all three attack at once spinning out of the triattack with his sword clutched over his head fringe has reached his prime one of the three men falls in anguish he laughs at their incompetence all the while glaring at the general with controlled fury he returns to the fight in progress as a two-on-one sword fight breaks out not long after a soldier s head hits the ground prior to decapitation as his body follows although he knows there s no chance the lonesome brave soldier doesn t stand down he honorably prepares for his last fight fringe allows this man a courteous fight pompously fringe toys with the soldier before he ends it with a blade through his sternum lashing his blood stained weapon out he approaches the fear-filled general pointing a gun at fringe the coward yells fool and fires his weapon blindly 6
