icfe 2012 quark:icfe 2009 quark 13/12/2011 11:39 page 6 level 6 nqai equivalence fetac code dsrxx leisure recreation management this course which is validated by edexcel/btec at higher national diploma level is intended primarily to prepare candidates interested in seeking employment in the expanding sport and leisure industry or who are seeking to progress to higher education in the area of sport and recreation 6 requirements candidates should have at least five subjects grade d in the leaving certificate to include english to qualify for a higher national diploma in sport and leisure management from edexcel btec candidates must have obtained five subjects in the leaving certificate including one subject at higher level description the course is full-time and requires attendance five days per week and is of two years duration students undertake a block of work experience in each year students are given extensive training in playing a variety of sports and leisure pursuits along with a comprehensive range of subjects in the area of leisure management and administration certification students are provided with the opportunity to receive certification from the following awarding bodies fetac ncva sport and recreation level 5 edexcel btec higher national diploma in sport and leisure management occupational first aid award n.c.e.f national certificate in exercise and fitness life-guarding career prospects graduates of this course have been very successful in gaining employment in the sport and leisure industry both in ireland and abroad examples of places of employment include sports halls swimming pools leisure pools leisure centres hotel leisure facilities outdoor education centres national governing bodies of sport schools sales and marketing sports development and sports retail outlets graduates have also availed of the opportunity to further their education by gaining entry to third level degree courses in many different universities and colleges in ireland and britain many students have availed of candidates should also be in good health candidates should show a positive interest in sport and leisure actvities and be aware of community needs an interest in all aspects of sport is required course director eamon mcginley

icfe 2012 quark:icfe 2009 quark 13/12/2011 11:39 page 7 course content year 1 the sport and leisure industry physical activity lifestyle and wellbeing marketing principles managing resources in sport and leisure management employment law anatomy and physiology for sport the opportunity to progress to degree courses in physical education and are now teaching in schools throughout ireland and britain students have followed degree courses in leisure and recreation management physical education sports science sociology of sport primary teaching and sports psychology sports students can participate in a variety of sports at higher education level these sports may include gaelic football soccer basketball rugby course content may be revised for educational or organisational reasons graduate profile janet byrne completed an edexcel btec higher national diploma in leisure management in inchicore college of further education in 2006 during her time in inchicore college janet repesented ireland in basketball and leisure instructing physical activity and exercise physical education work experience sport and recreation studies leisure facility operations occupational first aid swimming and water safety at under 20 level janet also completed the national certificate in exercise and fitness along with a lifesaving qualification as part of her course in inchicore college janet progressed from inchicore college year 2 research project operating and managing a sport and leisure facility law and sport and leisure operations event management in sport and leisure customer service to st mary s college strawberry hill in london she is currently employed as a p teacher in the u.k .e small business enterprise work-based experience managing in the health and fitness industry managing sports development lifeguarding physical education n.c.e.f 7 the following sports are also catered for at cdvec level cross-country track and field athletics swimming and golf.

icfe 2012 quark:icfe 2009 quark 13/12/2011 11:39 page 8 level 6 nqai equivalence fetac code dsrxx sport and exercise science health and fitness diploma this course aims to give students a thorough knowledge of all aspects of the practical side of the health and fitness industry if all areas of the options are taken a candidate will be in a position to be self employed as a life coach personal trainer or sporting coach 8 requirements applicants are expected to have leaving cert standard with at least one subject at higher level they must have a keen interest in sport and fitness and working in this area admittance to this course is by interview this course is open to vtos applicants all students will be continuously assessed throughout the year course description this course is a full-time two year course it requires attendance five days a week there will be a two week work experience block each year students are given extensive training in all aspects of the health and fitness industry with an emphasis on fitness testing personal training and lifestyle coaching students will learn how to coach various sports how to test individuals fitness design and prescribe gym fitness programmes students will visit and experience a range of leisure complexes and gyms certification students will receive certificates from edexcel btec a higher national diploma in sport and exercise science health and fitness diploma ncef certificate certified by the university of limerick at an optional extra cost in the second year level 6 nqai fetac sport and recreation award occupational first aid certificate fai soccer kickstart 1 2 youth cert vollyball coaching career prospects graduates of this course will have a range of further study or career options graduates may choose to pursue further education in sports science sports rehabilitation or pe with our link colleges in ireland or abroad with the ncef cert graduates may become self employed as a fitness trainer personal trainer or life coach employment may also be found working as an exercise instructor in a gym or coaching in schools or the community mature students are also welcome to apply course director karen parkinson course content may be revised for educational or organisational reasons.

icfe 2012 quark:icfe 2009 quark 13/12/2011 11:39 page 9 candidates candidates should have a keen interest in the health and fitness industry the applicant should be currently active in the sporting field as a player or coach a member of a gym or have an interest in their own physical and personal health development they should be highly motivated with a desire to be self employed as a personal trainer or life coach or to move on to further education in sports science or as a pe teacher candidates should have good communication skills graduate profile course content reuben holden after leaving school i tried various different jobs and i could see no long term future in any of them because of this i decided to return to education i completed the leisure recreation health and fitness diploma in 2010 the course gives an excellent foundation to build on as the modules are varied enough to provide a range of further study options i chose to follow up my studies in inchicore by completing a 1 year top-up bsc hons degree in sports business in the university of the west of england in 2011 i am currently working as an intern with colaiste dhulaigh and i plan on returning to education again in 2012 to do a post graduate course to become a teacher without inchicore college and the support of its brilliant staff this would not have been possible for me year one sport and recreation management applied coaching exercise testing and prescription soccer coaching fai anatomy and physiology exercise and fitness lifestyles management in the industry year two ncef optional extra employment law soccer coaching coaching principles design health and fitness programmes work experience it operations 9

icfe 2012 quark:icfe 2009 quark 13/12/2011 11:39 page 10 level 5 nqai qualifications framework fetac code dsrxx sports coaching this one year course is ideal for anyone thinking of entering the sports world as a profession its many features offer the students an opportunity to try several different sports obtain valuable coaching experience and make significant contacts with some of irelands leading sports governing bodies the students work closely with fai gaa iba and v.a.i in order to gain coaching qualifications 10 requirements candidates should have passed the leaving certificate or leaving certificate applied each applicant will be interviewed for the course and other factors will be taken into account e.g mature students playing coaching experience etc course description the course is full-time and of one year s duration students will be required to undertake work experience one day per week along with a three week block of work experience students will be given extensive training in both playing skills techniques and coaching skills work experience throughout the year students will be assigned to a variety of schools clubs development officers and community groups where they will have the opportunity to work with experienced coaches and to develop their own coaching skills candidates should also be in good health show a positive interest in the playing and coaching of their chosen sport be aware of community needs and have an interest in all areas of sport course director tony reilly many of our students use this course as a platform to gain entry onto the hnd in leisure management in inchicore college students may also avail of the higher education links scheme to access courses in many institutes of technology certification students will be given the opportunity to complete examinations from the following awarding bodies fetac sport and recreation level 5 the relevant national governing bodies of sport first-aid awarding body career opportunities sport is a very important part of life in ireland today with new stadia and leisure centres opening there are many options for the student who graduates from this course the student can look for employment with a national governing body teaching sport in schools or in clubs as a sport development officer.
