the battle of the mountains once upon a time there were 5 mountains one of the mountains names was tongariro he was the mighty chief another mountain s name was taranaki he was a snowy mountain and he was as big as tongariro there were two more male mountains named tauhara and putauaki they were smaller than the other two but they glared at the mighty tongariro then there was a beautiful mountain named pihanga which all of the male mountains loved pihanga lived a little further from the others she was sad about the trouble that was brewing between her mate tongariro and the other mountains then one day they had a battle taranaki blew a huge boulder at tongariro and tongariro did it back tauhara and putauaki burst lava at the back of tongariro for days and months and years the battle went on and the land shook until tauhara and putauaki gave up and moved away tauhara moved somewhere around lake taupo and putauaki moved further away taranaki carried on until he was puffed up and left tongariro and pihanga became husband and wife kerehi tamati
