lady elizabeth senior school newsletter january february 2012 valentine s day red house organised several events for valentine s day hearts and roses packages which consisted of a homemade brownie a rose and a card were sold and delivered on the day extra special deliveries included a beautiful long stemmed red rose heart shaped brownies and a tea light candle in a lovely candle holder a wonderful valentine s day hamper containing chocolates a cuddly toy roses a novelty pen a cup and heart shaped candles along with many more things was raffled at break time on valentine s day caretaker mr welfoot was delighted to be the winner of the hamper it was also a non-uniform day where students dressed up in red to this issue valen ne s day ski trip p 1 p.2 unitour p 3 geography field day p.3 art exhibi on p 4 interna onal choir fes val p 5 careers fair p 5 language academy p.6 alumni jamie bradley p 7 ex-student saadia hipkiss art show p 8 represent romance the day of red house continued with their endeavours to raise money for the combined school charities by holding a cake stall on the friday after valentine s day the last day before half term in total an incredible 1400 euros was raised well done red house for all of your efforts and also to all of the students parents and staff for their support p.1

ski trip staff and students from laude the lady elizabeth school spent a wonderful half term on the ski slopes in andorra they enjoyed a good cover of snow accompanied with brilliant sunshine making the skiing even more pleasurable ski lessons took place in the morning followed by free skiing in the afternoon where the students had the opportunity to practice what they had been taught during their lessons as well as the skiing they all had the opportunity to ice skate and on the last day were able to relax at the caldea spa resort a great week was had by everyone.

unitour students from the 1st and 2nd year of spanish bachillerato attended the sixth series of unitour which took place on the 18th of january in the hotel meliá in alicante unitour serves as a meeting point for students in order to discuss their future workplaces or indeed any questions related to the working world the pupils personally spoke to the experts and were able to clarify any doubts that they may have had concerning the universities or colleges many of which were represented at the event inma ferri school pedagogue geography field trip as part of their gcse course year 11 geography students visited the township of benissa during the morning theycollected data that they would need to make comparisons of two different areas of a settlement in this case the new and the old part of the town they investigated land use and building heights collected data on maps undertook environmental surveys and made traffic and shopping counts the information will be used in the following weeks to complete their controlled assessment as part of their gcse studies in geography.

art exhibition the laude lady elizabeth school presented an exhibition of student s art at denia s casa de cultura and having attended the opening night one can truly state the experience was a `feast for the eyes this beautifully presented exhibition represented a selection of 48 pictures depicting a variety of themes from still life to portraits and landscapes including genres ranging from pop-art to photorealism and psychologically revealing portraiture the stunning original creativity captivated the visitor from the moment they entered the room and the world of the student s imagination we were inspired by the variety of subject matter and the blaze of colours used to project the individual s view of life and art the exhibition showed truly impressive examples of eclectic styles and use of mediums these students who are only eighteen years old and yet to enter art college display a professional quality to their work which is clearly evident and demonstrates a very fine interpretation of both traditional and abstract themes and techniques more often associated with well established artists.

interna onal choir fes val our choir continue to excel every time they perform recently the show choir participated in the international choir festival which was held in alfas del pi where they received a standing ovation from a very appreciative audience mrs millington was delighted with their wonderful efforts and the dedication they have shown in their attendance at rehearsals which are held during lunch hour or after school and quite often on weekends and in their attendance at performances which are often out of school hours careers fair laude the lady elizabeth senior school recently held their annual careers fair which is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain an insight into a career which they may be interested in these afternoons are proving to be a huge success and are aimed primarily at students in years 9 and 11 when important subject and career choices need to be made it is also open to year 12 and year 13 students to attend as they find the delegates interesting and inspiring the afternoon opened with a keynote speech by elaine shapiro who has had an interesting and varied career path working in the armed forces the police force and teaching the students found her talk informative and at times entertaining especially when she disclosed that she almost became a nun at one point this was followed by short presentations from professionals with a varied range of career areas to small groups of students focusing not only on their particular career area but also on the more general aspects of what the world of work is about the pupils attended four different talks over the afternoon and recorded notes and asked questions about the specific careers being discussed this year they had the opportunity to listen to talks by professionals in the following fields performing arts professional sport marine biology beauty therapy and business management journalism and orthopaedic surgery there was a great interest in the sessions and the visiting delegates were very impressed by our students and the whole event we would like to thank all who participated giving up their valuable time and helping to make the afternoon such a big success!

language academy chinese lessons the language academy is held at both the junior school and the senior school and offers classes to adults and children in english spanish and chinese the english and spanish classes are already successful and we are delighted that the chinese lessons are proving to be very popular in both schools this is no wonder as chinese is the language of nearly 1/4 of the world s population speakers of chinese not only live in china taiwan and singapore but are also spread throughout southeast asia north america and europe where large chinese communities congregate china has a fast growing economy and proficient speakers of mandarin chinese could find jobs in various fields including business tourism information technology etc the more languages our children have the more opportunities are open to them in the future chinese classes are currently being held in the senior school on wednesdays commencing at 16.45 and after school in the junior school each tuesday and thursday for further information regarding any of the language academy classes please email mrs gaughan languageacademy@laudeladyelizabeth.com or call the senior school 965 731 960 or the junior school 965 790 252.

les alumni jamie bradley jamie bradley began dancing at the age of 3 he spent many years developing his skills and always showed commitment to what he loved as he got older he set his sights on a career in dance and achieved the necessary qualifications through istd dance examinations and here at school in order to give him the opportunity to gain a place on a degree course at the young age of 16 jamie left the lady elizabeth school in 2007 at the age of 16 with 10 gsces and an as level in spanish to take up a place at london studio centre on a classical dance foundation degree course a year later he transferred to one of the most prestigious ballet schools in the uk central school of ballet he studied ballet and contemporary dance here for 3 years before graduating in july 2011 in august 2011 he moved to japan to begin his first job as a dancer working at tokyo disneyland in the show `one man s dream he plays the role of peter pan as well as other dancing roles and performs up to 5 times daily when his contract is complete in april he will begin auditioning for dance companies worldwide and continue to pursue the career that he planned for himself from such an early age without his dedication and determination as well as extreme hard work he would not have been able to follow his dream but what a great example of what our students can achieve with the belief of their teachers and a goal!

saadia hipkiss art exhibition hipkiss saadia s artwork is something different it stands out not only in terms of scale and quality her work touches a nerve the style is based on street art posters art nouveau and graffiti the theme of music is also shown throughout her artwork and her images spans generations the professionalism of the art was enhanced in a gallery setting and was a great opportunity for the public to enjoy the show listen to music and relax saadia enjoyed the experience of holding an exhibition and is looking forward to continuing her study of art in the next few years s aadia hipkiss former laude lady elizabeth school art student held her first ever art exhibition at javea port s café d art.
