march 2012 newsletter the best pet show ever on march 1st the primary classes performed the best pet show ever mrs bradley s class sang fred the cat mrs weatherford s class sang a song about bunnies and mr clark s class sang sammy the snake mrs keere s class sang let s hear it for the s.p.c.a mr hellyer s class sang the pet owners rap and mrs noonan s class sang max the dog mrs lakshmannan and mrs d orazios classes sang i don t have a pet mrs savage taught all the classes the songs and directed the play all the parents enjoyed the performance it was the best pet show ever by quinn m grade one digital citizenship the photographer s lens after discussing the text raising a digital child by mark ribble hands on science a big thank you to our scc for supporting our scientists in school our intermediate division created 5 presentations based on mark ribble s 9 elements of digital citizenship these 5 elements were taught to the intermediate division students in a carousel format with interactive sessions presented by our intermediate teachers principal and viceprincipal students also completed activities based on these elements glogs skits etc and then held a celebration where students wrote a digital driver s setting goals with esteem team license exam in the gym and received their digital citizenship driver s license the next step will be for these digital citizens to now present what they have learned to the grade 6 students.

march 2012 newsletter sir samuel steele students celebrate earth hour on fri march 30th the students will participate in the durham earth hour challenge we will be turning off all nonessential lighting as well as any computers and electronic devices that are not in use for one hour beginning at 10:00 the students will be cleaning up the school yard as well as some designated streets in our community they will be provided with gloves and bags and will be supervised by teachers this is our way of showing support for the global earth hour challenge that takes place on sat march 31st it also shows that we can make a difference by conserving energy durham forest outdoor education summer fun at the durham forest centre for many years now the durham forest environmental education centre has been operating a summer day camp program for durham children seven through twelve years of age once again this coming summer there will be lots of fun and learning in the forest as six one-week sessions of camp will be offered in july and august located just south of uxbridge the durham forest environmental education centre provides a wonderful facility and enthusiastic staff for this unique summer experience information brochures and registration forms are available by calling the forest or by accessing our web site www.ddsb.durham.edu.on.ca choose programs then outdoor education there will be an informal open house at the durham forest facility on tuesday may 15 2012 from 7:00 -8:00 p.m please join the durham forest staff for a tour of our facilities and to learn more about this summer program for questions or further info call us at the forest 905852-3030http www.ddsb.durham.edu.on.ca athletes in action!

march 2012 newsletter nutrition and learning did you know under-nutrition increases how often and how long a child may be sick in addition to being absent from school illness limits learning as sick children do not interact well with others reminder spring has sprung please continue to dress your students appropriately for the ever changing weather for younger students it is suggested that you pack an extra pair of pants and socks just in case the mud finds its way to your children.
