march 2012 dear parents welcome to this year s booklet that outlines for you and your son or daughter the courses that we are offering in key stage four next year if you are reading the electronic version i hope you feel it is easy to use we have worked hard to try and give you and your child the information that you need about the courses that they are going to spend the next three years studying the information to all the courses can be found via the front page of moodle where there is an e book or a pdf version of the course descriptions and forms core subjects as you might expect in key stage four all students will carry on studying english maths and science they will also continue to have two hours of pe a week and each student will take modules of compulsory re spread throughout years 9 and 10 these subjects will continue to be taught in ability bands choices in other subjects students have to choose a pathway that they would like to follow you will find a range of qualifications across these pathways including gcses vocational courses at college btecs a gcse equivalent and one a/s level these are not taught in ability bands pathways you will see from the booklet you receive that we have made some suggestions about the pathway which we believe best supports your son or daughter particularly in the light of changes to the key stage 4 examinations for example what is being called the english baccalaureate a combination of english maths science languages and a humanities subject and a reduction in the number of btecs which now count for the same as a gcse i am sure we will talk about these matters and the recommended pathways at information and parent evenings.

dates for your diary students having subject presentations made to them within class time weeks beginning 16th and 23rd april our choices fair for students and parents 17th april 2012 the publication of the year 8 reports which includes subject recommendations for ks4 30th march 2012 parents evenings 24th april and 2nd may 2012 students having a one to one review with their tutors the dates for these are 8c1 and 8c2 tuesday 8th may 2012 8c3 and 8d1 wednesday 9th may 2012 8d2 and 8e1 thursday 10th may 2012 8e2 and 8e3 friday 11th may 2012 please note that whilst we work hard to provide choice for students and to give as many as we can their first choice this is not always possible if not enough students choose a course we cannot run it in some subjects such as technology we cannot run groups above a certain size where this happens we will be in touch with you to discuss the best next steps i hope that you find this booklet and the process useful and informative we are always aware of how much detail we have to give you and how challenging this can be especially for parents who are going through the system for the first time as ever please do not hesitate to get in touch with us if you feel we can help or if you want to discuss in more detail the pathway that we have recommended good contacts to choose from are your child s tutor or guidance manager mrs kennedy our key stage 3 manager mr nevola our curriculum deputy or myself all responses must be returned by 18th may 2012 at the latest in the meantime i look forward to the next exciting and challenging part of your son or daughter s education at perins school yours sincerely janice bernard head teacher

year 8 choices 2012 advice to students do talk to the people who know you really well family friends your tutor and subject teachers read all the course information contained within your pathway so you have a clear idea of what each course involves come to the choices fair with your family on 17th april 5-7pm in the sports hall come to parents evening on 24th april or 2nd may pay attention to all the subject presentations that will be made in your subject lessons think ahead to your future if you have a career path in mind be proactive research what qualifications you need make use of the which way now booklet to help you make informed decisions reflect on what you are successful at and what you enjoy speak to your tutor mrs kennedy or mr nevola if there is a problem with what you want to choose use all the help available to make the correct choice first time don t leave your decisions until the last minute make choices based upon what your friends are doing there is nothing to say you would be in the same class anyway make a choice because you like the teacher you currently have you may not have the same teacher next year choose a subject because you think it looks easy there is no such thing as an easy subject all courses will stretch and challenge you.

core unit 3 the creative media sector this core unit focuses on developing the learners understanding of the media industry and the ways in which that industry is organised they will learn how the industry is structured as a whole and about the structure of individual companies this will develop an understanding of specific job roles in the industry and how people are recruited into these roles core unit 4 media audiences and products this core unit focuses on the ways in which media industries gather information about their audiences and categorise them how the texts the industries produce are constructed and addressed to particular audiences and how those audiences make sense of the products offered to them in this unit learners will also become familiar with the basic language and key concepts which are fundamental to studying the media and its products specialist unit 5 video production this unit introduces learners to the techniques and technology of video-based production work learners will develop an understanding of the three stages of pre-production production and post-production they will also investigate the basic prerequisites for video production proposals and learn what should go into a production proposal learners will then apply their understanding working as part of a team to complete a video product on completion of the product learners will review their contribution to the production process and to the quality of the product specialist unit 8 interactive media production this unit will enable learners to explore techniques associated with the production of an interactive media product this involves the use of authoring software and the creative integration of audio and visual material to produce a final product it is essential that the product is focused on the needs of the user screen design and layout are important but the final functioning interactive media product created for this unit must be easy to use and easy to understand specialist unit 9 photography techniques this unit will enable learners to explore and develop their understanding of the techniques equipment and materials used in the production of photographs learners will explore both film-based photographic methods and the processes involved in digital photography they will develop ideas for their own photographic work and create a range of photographic images specialist unit 10 animation techniques this unit will enable learners to explore and develop their understanding of the techniques equipment and materials used in the production of animations learners will explore the history and development of animations they will develop ideas for their own animation work and create a range of animations specialist unit 18 advertising production this unit introduces learners to the techniques of advertising it shows them how to develop ideas for advertisements and how to plan and produce advertisements in a selected medium learns will be required to analyse the brand image of a product and consider what consumers might demand of it they will then plan and produce an advertisement assessment assessment occurs at the end of every module it is marked both internally and externally assessment can take a variety of forms including case studies projects performances observations timed assessments this course is currently under review for those candidates who will finish the course in 2015 the advice from edexcel is that the course is likely to be similar content to previous years with the external assessment being based on one of the core units further details of the course can be obtained at the following website http www.edexcel.com/quals/firsts10/media/pages/default.aspx
