marriage the home jesus asks this penetrating question what think ye of christ the religious leaders of his day have tried to entangle jesus by asking questions about taxes marriage death the resurrection and the greatest commandment in the law yet christ asked them who is lord and these pious knowit-alls are utterly confounded it may even stagger many christians to realize how closely tied money marriage and the messiah s message are to our daily lives this ungodly world cannot understand god s perfect plan and with great effort rejects biblical teaching concerning marriage and the family unregenerate man and sadly some professed believers think they know more than god the devastating result is heartbreaking consequences and ruined lives we will start with ladies first titling this section first lady for christ many religions of this world treat women as second-class citizens or less but the bible sets forth the worth and honour of the proverbs 31 lady who can find a virtuous woman for her price is far above rubies matthew henry states this description of the virtuous woman is designed to show what wives the woman should make and what wives the men should choose we have the abridgement of it in the new testament i tim 2:9,10 i pe.3:1-6 where the duty prescribed to wives agrees with this description of a good wife please read proverbs 31:10-31 for wives mothers and all young ladies in christ let us challenge you to be first ladies for christ here is an acrostic using the word f-i-r-s-t to describe the virtuous woman of proverbs 31 f aith a virtuous woman a woman of strength made so by her faith and fear in the mercy love grace and wisdom of her righteous and holy god i ntegrity a virtuous woman a woman of holiness and wholeness fixed and firm in honesty r econciliation a virtuous woman a woman reconciled to god with the ministry of reconciliation in the husband home and hearts of those around her ii·the voice in the wilderness marriage home

s tewardship a virtuous woman a woman of industry well able to furnish her household t rust a virtuous woman a woman called blessed by her children a woman trusted and praised by her husband in american history the u.s president s wife was not referred to as the first lady until zachary taylor used the term in reference to dolley madison within a decade of zachary taylor s 1849 eulogy first lady had become the standard title of the president s wife beginning with martha washington many of the president s wives set forth an example of dignity and grace in their role as a leader though a very private person she understood the pressures of this very public role with her aristocratic virginia roots martha wa shingtonwas criticized as too royal by some americans wary of all things british at the same time she was decried as too common by those who feared that her habits of recycling old gowns and of retiring early during receptions might confirm the suspicions of the world that america was an uncivilized wilderness but to all who visited the president s house in new york city or later in philadelphia lady washington was the model of grace and propriety eventually these qualities won her the affection and respect of all america ref first ladies of the white house by skarmeas page 5 sarah polk and her husband brought to the white house a marriage that was a true partnership she often told friends that she believed that she and her husband were predestined by god to lead america upon arriving to the white house sarah immediately made her presence felt believing that dancing in the white house rooms would be undignified she banned all dancing card playing and drinking when the first lady entered the room during her husband s inaugural ball the music and dancing ceased in her honor known to possess a balance of ego and humility she used her leadership role while insisting i recognize nothing in myself i am only an atom in the hands of god ref first ladies of the white house skarmeas page 23 lucy hayes mocked in the press as lemonade lucy immediately established a white house policy banning alcohol at all receptions she resisted all efforts by the temperance movement to become part of their leadership and maintained a firm belief that hers was essentially a private role in a public setting for more resources visit www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org ·iii

she was the first first lady to hold a college degree she had the education resources and opportunity to make the role of first lady an active independent and powerful one however lucy focused on her family responsibilities and her husband while not totally shunning public duties she was the first president s wife to travel without her husband and to deliver prepared speeches lucy also took an active role as president of the women s missionary society at her church during her husband s presidency ref first ladies of the white house by skarmeas page 36 in titus 2:3 the mature lady in christ is exhorted to be an example and teacher of good things to the younger women in christ today the life support system has been removed and death is eminent for many the departure from the biblical model by so many women in our church today has left us vulnerable so-called women s liberation and the farming out of our god-given privileges and responsibilities have thrown our children to the ravening wolves what has happened to the heart of mothers who no longer want to teach and train and love their children with the kind of affection that should be obvious to the woman in christ an infant crying in the night an infant crying for the light and with no language but a cry tennyson yet `tis mother and without sigh knows the language of her baby s cry and in the day or in the night `tis her love that brings comfort and delight rlw no wonder our families children and marriages are out of control the very stabilizing element so critical to the home has been eroded without these godly women actively engaged in their biblical role titus says the word of god will be blasphemed titus 2:5 thank the lord for godly ladies who courageously stand firm in this age of compromise those today who are characterized by titus 2:3-5 are indeed to be praised proverbs 31:28 thou excellest them all my helpmeet the privilege our lord has given me of overseeing this ministry preaching writing and sharing the needs of precious missionaries with the voice in the wilderness supporters is indeed sobering without the help of the first lady of the voice in the wilderness my bride of 39 years it would not be possible my lord knew and prepared my life and ministry iv·the voice in the wilderness marriage home

indeed this is one of the great love stories one of selfless commitment and deeply spiritual simply explained the origin was heaven-born from him who is love the young man s first gift to his future bride was pilgrim s progress at that point his intent was to encourage her along the walk with christ signed in the fly-leaf miss thompson with desires for her progress in the blessed pilgrimage then the date with no other indications still higher plans were divinely charted whether the two knew or not though soon he would hand a book about marriage and poems to this susannah in a soft voice as she read he whispered do you pray for him who is to be your husband almost two years after the first gift the two became one in a beautiful early morning ceremony off to paris for a ten-day honeymoon and the start of a romance that was truly an ordained partnership from lofty heights of ministry to plunging valleys where each must draw on the other their love was their love for their lord those years without a cloud phenomenal success rose to the failing health of one and then the other in sickness invalidism and even depression their devoted love flowed ever sweeter deeper and more precious after twenty years as husband and wife he wrote my heart flies to you i love you now as then only multiplied many times i have served the lord far more and never less for your sweet companionship bless your dear heart you are the precise form in which god would make a woman for such a man as i 1 susannah was a powerful inspiration to her husband he would weep at her feet from exhaustion and the depressive load he bore she was comfort and ministered he said as an angel from god with her faith strength and courage she called him tirshatha this was her name of endearment meaning your reverence who was this amazing couple he wrote this incredible description about his beloved she delights in her husband in his person his character his affection to her he is not only the chief and foremost of mankind but in her eyes he is all in all her heart s love belongs to him and to him only he is her little world her paradise her choice treasure she is glad to sink her individuality in his she seeks no renown for herself his honor is reflected upon her and she rejoices in it she will defend his name with 1 vi·the voice in the wilderness marriage home the shadow of the broad brim richard elisworth day you may order a copy of the shadow of the broad brim from crown christian classics crown publication powell tn 1-877-at crown.

her dying breath safe enough is he where she can speak for him his smiling gratitude is all the reward she seeks even in her dress she thinks of him and considers nothing beautiful which is distasteful to him he has many objects in life some of which she does not quite understand but she believes in them all and anything she can do to promote them she delights to perform such a wife as a true spouse realizes the model marriage relation and sets forth what our oneness with the lord ought to be 2 such was a veiled description of susannah by her husband the sad day came when she followed behind her beloved husband s casket the grief was so great until she remembered his sweet words of cheer when he must be away in travels seeing me look so sad he tenderly said `what crying over your lamb wifie do you think the children of israel stood and wept over the lamb they laid on his altar then the heart of susannah found peace in tears she looked at the great portrait of tirshatha over the mantel and sobbed ah sweetheart was there ever one like thee in all these forty years i knew thee thou wert most tender gracious and now i am parted from thee not for a few days only as in 2 ibid that long ago time but `until the day break and the shadows flee away i think i hear thy loving voice saying again `don t cry over your lamb wifie as i try to give thee up ungrudgingly to god not without tears ah no that is not possible but with that full surrender of heart which makes the sacrifice acceptable in his sight 3 who are they this is the beautiful love story of susannah and charles haddon spurgeon please take a moment to read ephesians 5:21-32 on the home front what a joy and blessing to see a beautiful marriage and family serving the lord jesus christ with the sweet presence of the holy spirit so evident yes it is possible today even in such a crazy and confusing age husband and wife mom dad and children can enjoy all the riches god intended for the home the late dr m.r dehaan bible teacher and medical doctor stated the nearest thing to heaven on this earth is the christian family and the home where husband and wife and parents and children live in love and peace together for the lord and for each other the nearest thing to hell on earth is an ungodly 3 ibid for more resources visit www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org ·vii

fault none of us like to accept responsibility not to speak of face the consequences it is a full time job keeping my own business right much less tending to someone else s by the way john also said if we say that we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us i john 1:8 have you considered the beam that is in your eye matthew 7:3-5 is thy heart right with god much could be said about the world s method of dating but the point here is vulnerable boys and girls not searching for love repeatedly giving their heart to someone even many someones they will never marry but each boy and girl living a godly life then the lord will bring the right one along don t worry about looking for the right one just be the right one and the lord will take care of the rest iv cleanliness is next to what we had a guest preacher staying in our home he remarked one morning while standing in the kitchen sister williamson the top of your refrigerator is clean well being over 6 feet tall he could see the top of most refrigerators and commented that rarely had a refrigerator top been wiped down in most of the homes he visited when we relocated the voice in the wilderness corporate office from dallas to north carolina sister sophie muller had a relative who was a realtor through this individual we spent several days a week for months looking at various properties my wife and i were shocked at the lack of housekeeping even when an owner knew in advance we were coming to look at their house the place would still be in a wreck not only were clothes and dishes and things out of order house after house after house was absolutely filthy i cease to be amazed these days at how few real housekeepers there are then it s amazing how many men and women simply let their appearance go shortly after they are married talk about gaining weight bad hair days and just simply well let s stop there just maintain a godly testimony v it s not a dirty word after children come along what kind of character discipline and work ethic are we teaching parents a blessing you can pass on to your child that will benefit them personally their family in years to come and prove to be a tremendous asset to their local church is that of a strong work ethic rand hummel of the wilds wrote this outline work work work most of us do not like for more resources visit www.thevoiceinthewilderness.org ·ix
