on the cover in 1955 while walking to school charley beckman passed the local doctor s house and there in the driveway was a gleaming new thunderbird he thought it was the most beautiful thing he had ever seen and vowed to have one when he grew up that dream simmered in the back of his mind for the next twenty years but took a back seat to vietnam college marriage and a family there were some corvettes and other fun cars in the meantime but always a yearning for that gleaming t-bird hanging out in the back of his mind in 1978 his brother drove up in a beautiful white 55 t-bird that he was test-driving with the intention of buying it from a co-worker when his brother decided he couldn t fit it in his budget charley jumped on the deal and took it home the body was pristine and it drove like a dream but there was a problem it didn t really fit in charley s budget either with a new business just getting off the ground and kids to raise there were just too many other places that money was needed after about six months the obvious though reluctant decision was made to sell it a one day ad was put in the local paper and the first caller walked in with cash and counted it out with hardly a second glance at the car he wasn t even interested in a test drive it was only a few weeks later that charley discovered the market for baby birds had sky rocketed and the car was now worth two or three times what he had sold it for by 2003 the kids were grown business was good and it was time to start looking seriously for that dream car again this time he was going to be a little more methodical and market savvy he knew he wanted a 55 with the big four options power seat windows steering and brakes and it wasn t an easy search after several months a promising candidate was found in portland oregon a deal was struck over the phone and he flew to portland to drive it home the seller had service records and receipts going back 40 years and in the last 1000 miles had rebuilt the engine boring it .030 over rebuilt 312 heads had been added and the transmission had been rebuilt a 12 volt conversion was installed and the entire suspension brake system and exhaust system had also been rebuilt a modern holly four barrel topped it off a problem became apparent quickly on the drive back to california top speed seemed to be about 55 or 60 and pulling a hill it would drop to about 30mph a quick search under the hood revealed that someone had put a clip on the throttle linkage that limited the throttle movement to about 30 of it s range once the throttle movement was restored the engine would really start to miss with anything more than about half throttle with some timing and carburetor adjustments along the way the limping bird made it home to california charley s brother bill is the acknowledged head mechanic in the family and with his help they began to dig for the problem causing the poor running condition the timing mark had slipped on the balancer and so they lined up the timing on number 1 and adjusted the valves and soon had it purring but in less than 100 miles it would be missing again new plugs wires and distributor parts re-adjust everything and it would purr again only to start missing after a 100 miles due to limited time and space for working on the car this routine was repeated occasionally with assorted variations over the next three years bill became convinced that without firsthand knowledge of exactly what had been done to the engine the only logical next step was to replace it charley was just as convinced that with everything that had been done under that hood there just had to be a simpler avenue to solving the problem just to humor charley bill agreed they would go through it one last time before throwing in the towel and replacing the engine cont
