7 president s message h appy valentine s day from arizona thanks to wireless connections and email i am sending in my submission to our ever-patient newsletter guru ron webster on time by the time you are reading this i expect you ll all have had a chance to check out the manitoba chapter s newly revamped and renamed website in addition the chapter now has a long-needed facebook and twitter account jodi lee has done a great job of leading our cyberspace improvement project she welcomes your feedback to what she s done already and is looking for your innovative ideas about what more to add/make it more user-friendly/reorganize the data/etc to all three sites remember that the information on the site is only as good as the information that is being provided if something is no longer accurate she needs to know asap for example booy s foods has ceased production on their wonderful gluten-free foods it s unfortunate that the gluten free community has lost a local supplier of quality gluten-free products like perogies and fruitcake not readily available elsewhere we all know the shelf life of gluten free products is short and the distribution to a niche market is challenging as a group we need to support our local businesses or they will suffer the same fate as booy s thanks to nancy moffat heather yeo dorothy macintyre cathy and bruce jones and all the other volunteers who made the annual pancake event such a success in february i wasn t there to enjoy the gluten-free pancakes but i understand they were just delicious the chapter s appreciation also goes to jeanelle kovacs and jennifer essar for sharing their gluten-free experiences in a variety of settings at the meeting over the winter i have had the opportunity to do some travelling in cuba i stayed at an all-inclusive resort with both buffets and a la carte restaurants i am pleased to say every food service person i spoke with acknowledged my dietary needs some of them were better acquainted with the diet than others but all were willing to listen and learn i have found that it s best to communicate with hotel and restaurant personnel in their own language even if they do speak english they may or may not know what the english words barley or wheat might mean downloading the appropriate translation from a site like www.celiactravel.com makes one s life so much easier in california and arizona there is a huge hispanic influence on foods that s good for us because rice beans and corn are all gluten-free but i was pleasantly surprised by some of the other food discoveries i made trader joe s and sprouts both natural health food store chains carry lots of familiar products and have some that were new to me how about a box of store brand gluten-free waffles for $1.99 at trader joe s the gluten-free pancakes next to them in the freezer section were only $3.99 i was very disappointed that i didn t notice the large bright yellow signs offering gluten-free pizza and pasta at one of the stalls in the food court at the los angeles farmer s market until after i had ordered something else for lunch at another booth however just few stalls over i found pappardelle s booth where they sell ten varieties of gluten-free pastas to take home the owner shared that their gf pastas are all made in a dedicated gf kitchen in colorado and shipped to them on a weekly basis i was sorry continued on page 8

8 that they had only a few kinds left when i got there www.papparedellespasta.com the celiac scene s list of gluten-friendly restaurant chains list found at www.theceliacscene.com roadmap.php was helpful p f chang s and california pizza kitchen were within walking distance of my anaheim hotel both had gluten free items clearly marked on their regular menu at the outback steak house they have a separate gf menu it looks just like their regular one but specifies item by item what is and is not gluten free including sauces and side dishes fast food tends to be bad news for gluten-free eaters everything usually comes in a glutencontaining bun or on a gluten-containing pizza shell when i walked into a carl s jr hamburger chain restaurant i was greeted at the front counter with a specialty diet list with pictures that included glutenfree options did they have gluten-free buns no but i had a regular hamburger with all the trimmings wrapped inside a couple of huge lettuce leaves it was probably healthier than having it with the bun even if i could have eaten gluten another day i was looking for snacks for a long day in the car and found gluten-free cold cuts that didn t require refrigeration until opened i thought that my 3 ounce package of genoa salami was a bargain for only $1 www.hormel.com a little bit of looking also revealed several varieties and brands of gluten-free cookies and crackers new to me if you re going near the san diego stop by gni gluten not included bakery in escondido www.gnibakery.com the bakery has both a wholesale and retail operation on site and supplies lots of other local sites such as the san diego zoo seaworld and legoland the day i was there the racks of gf biscotti drying to pack were emanating wonderful smells has anyone tried an impossible pumpkin pie from petosa www.petosafamilyfoods.com an arizona-based gf food supplier and the good news is that i found that mix and many others in a regular not specialty grocery store in maricopa please think about what small way you too can contribute outside phoenix such discoveries make to making it easier to eat gluten free can you spare a my suitcase very heavy on my way couple of hours to help staff the chapter display for celiac home awareness month in may could you put the manitoba speaking of home our annual general chapter contact information labels on our canadian celiac meeting is coming up in april come to association brochures how about making a donation to the meeting and share your thoughts the canadian celiac association s right to safe food please think about what small way you campaign so that the kind of information i shared above is too can contribute to making it easier to readily available in places across canada what about eat gluten free can you spare a couple cooking the hot dogs at the chapter walkathon bbq in of hours to help staff the chapter display june each and every one of you is capable of doing those for celiac awareness month in may jobs could you put the manitoba chapter contact information labels on our canadian celiac association brochures how about making a donation to the canadian celiac association s right to safe food campaign so that the kind of information i shared above is readily available in places across canada what about cooking the hot dogs at the chapter walkathon bbq in june each and every one of you is capable of doing those jobs sharing your successes and challenges in eating out wherever you ve been lately is always helpful to others your story about dining on a round-the-world cruise or in a local coffee-shop is the kind of story people look for in our newsletter and on our facebook page if any of you are driving to the canadian celiac association annual conference in kelowna at the end of may the rest of us would like to know the secrets of your gluten-free journey thanks to all those who have worked so hard to assist the manitoba chapter in its 31st year i look forward to seeing all of you over the coming months at chapter events the national conference in kecontinued on page 9

13 hello cca this past weekend the board of directors met in mississauga ontario to review the association s performance in 2011 and to make plans for 2012 and beyond we were joined by jacquelin gates from the pab and ivy warren president of the nova scotia chapter both brought a unique point of view to our deliberations and we are very grateful for their time and contributions i would also like to thank the nova scotia chapter for funding ivy s travel costs to the meeting their support of our process is very much appreciated some highlights from our meeting follow 2011 ends with a loss as we projected and reported in october the year 2011 ended in a loss position for the cca two main reasons stand out firstly donations were down though many generous donations came in towards the end of the year as news of our financial situation spread we were never really able to recover from a slow start secondly the board took a deliberate decision near the start of 2011 to invest additional funds in the certification program faced with the choice between cancelling the program and investing some of our available funds the choice was to make the investment the result is a loss of $246,629 on the year our treasurer bob beddie will provide further detail in a subsequent message the financial statement and audit report will be available soon we have also prepared a more formal press release that we will post to the website i prefer this format to communicate with you the chapter leadership but a formal statement is also required how do we fund a loss as a charity we cannot borrow the money from a bank we have nothing to secure a loan against what we do have is our ja campbell research fund this fund has been built up over many years for the purpose of research as will be seen in the financial statements we have effectively borrowed the money from that fund a flexibility which is allowed at the discretion of the board the intent is to repay the jac account but it will likely take a few years to do so contingent on future surplus years the good news is that the jac account is still very healthy fully capable to fund the kinds of research awards we have historically supported in 2011 a jac research grant was approved for a project led by drs duerksen and silvester from manitoba and a young investigator award granted to michelle wiepjes from hamilton in that sense it is business as usual for the cca and for celiac-related research in canada strategic planning we completed a second phase of strategic planning during our recent board meeting we now proceed towards a draft of our three year strategic plan for 2012 -2014 we shall be ready to publish the plan next month in broad strokes we identify advocacy financial sustainability and communication as our three main areas requiring attention within our strategy for advocacy we target an operational certification program and a project to ensure safe gluten free foods are available in institutions this is an important element of our right to safe food initiative for financial stability we recognize that a national fund raising program is a critical but presently missing component for the cca finally on the topic of communication we ll target to improve website database and internet capability for better communication within the organization and with the gf community in general we look forward to publishing the cca s strategic plan and executing it continued on page 14
