volume 41 no 3 east gaston high school s student newspaper 1744 lane road mount holly nc 28120 feb-march 2012 ode to ms cloninger by tyler persinger on friday january 13 ms cloninger east gaston s most beloved faculty member passed away surrounded by her loved ones she lost her battle to cancer at levine dickson hospice house in huntersville in many ways ms cloninger did not lose in her 26 years at east gaston she touched thousands of lives as a guidance councelor and head of fellowship of christian athletes she was not only a mentor and a leader but an amazing friend she always thought of others before she thought of herself she was just a great person to model your life after said coach howell east gaston s athletic director ms cloninger was one of east gaston s biggest athletic supporters as well she loved baseball and was always seen sitting in the same spot by the bullpen supporting the warriors at home games we were at a baseball game a couple years ago recalls howell and some of the fans were not being as supportive as they should have been she just stood up and she yelled `it s okay boys we love you for whoever you are it probably put some people to shame that s really who she was she was probably our number one fan said coach sellers the east gaston head baseball coach and she was my friend what better way to be remembered than to be remembered as somebody s friend this year the baseball team had an anonymous donor who bought the team new uniforms and asked to dedicate them to the memory of ms cloninger even those who did not know her well could tell that she was a special person i got to know her a little bit over the summer and at the beginning of the year said mrs bostic who is in her first year as principal at east gaston i could tell that she was a hard worker and was very dedicated to her job and cared about what she did she spent a lot of time here over the summer even during the time when she was not getting paid because she wanted to make sure that everything was in place for when the students came back she very much cared about the school and the students there were obviously plenty of days that she was not feeling well but she wanted to be here and she wanted to make sure the students had what they needed to be successful this is true i remember when she came to different senior classrooms to talk to the students about colleges and scholarships she struggled to and from each classroom but was determined to help the students if you didn t see her but heard her during that time you wouldn t have known she was sick unless somebody told you her personality was as bright as ever and she refused to let her illness affect her desire to help others she never pulled the `cancer card said mrs wilkinson a fellow councelor and friend she wanted to make sure she was doing her part sometimes we had to tell her to stop i think the things that stuck out with me the most were her willingness to work her love for the students here and her desire to be here no matter what ms cloninger was one of the most selfless people you could know she was the valedictorian of her high school class and homecoming queen but a lot of people didn t know that about her because she never wanted to talk about her own accomplishments she never told people those kinds of things i didn t even know that until her funeral recalled mrs wilkinson her personality her willingness to help others her caring attitude and her strong faith made her the person that she was she affects every one of us even now that she s gone if there was ever a person to model your life after it would be that of ms cindy cloninger.

feb-march 2012 page 2 sports by jacob melton the east gaston wrestling warriors have had an awesome year on the mat the warriors fought hard for the season that they had it was not easy for them but they pushed through the warriors produced a state cham states here we come pion this year in the 4a state championships our very own john grigg finished first in obtaining the state title weighing in at 132 pounds and michael bedard finished third at 120 pounds in class 4a this is a very tremendous accomplishment for these two young men and we are very proud of them every match they had to forfeit four out of the fourteen spots they needed to wrestle so they had to start every match four to zero the reason they had to give up four spots is because they didn t have enough people to fit the weight classes they needed this was quite a setback considering there were only ten more spots to wrestle despite this setback the warriors finished 10 6 in duals and 2nd in conference the top three wrestlers this year were grigg at 132 jacob grigg at 126 pounds and bedard at 120 these three wrestlers had an outstanding year for the warriors there are also four seniors this year that led the warriors which are john grigg cody moore rhett odom and tyler mccurdy senior john grigg said this year in wrestling season has been great although our team accomplishments did not go as we planned we have had a great season as an individual my goal was to win a state title for my last year of wrestling it was well in my grasp and i knew it would be mine to lose wrestling is a very hard sport to participate in because if you make a mistake there s no one to blame except yourself it s a sport that combines physical and mental toughness to succeed one of the struggles this year for the warriors was finding a sparring partner for odom who wrestled in the heavy weight bracket this year the coaches had to find alumni and assistant coaches to wrestle odom so he could practice they overcame this task and pushed forward through the season when asked about what coach scott goins would say about wrestling he stated if you really want to know what you re made of no sport more than wrestling will give you that opportunity

feb-march 2012 page 8 by jordan mccumbee super bowl xlvi was an amazing game played by two teams that desired to be champions more than anything this year s game was host to the new york giants and the new england patriots a rematch of super bowl xlii in which the giants mounted a fourth quarter comeback to win the giants had a regular season record of 9-7 and had an extremely tough path to the super bowl since the giants were only the 4th seed in the nfc they had to go through the power house out of green bay and a very young and consistent 49 er team the patriots finished with a regular season of record of 13-3 and clinched the 1st seed in the afc the patriots were led by quarterback tom brady whose personal stat sheet is filled with amazing accomplishments which include three super bowl championships and two super bowl mvp s he and his high-power patriot offense were favorites to win but that dream was spoiled by eli manning and the giants hard nose defense eli manning completed 30 of his 40 passes threw for 296 yards with one touchdown pass and was also named super bowl mvp senior zac queen even commented saying eli is even better than his brother g-men win again peyton his amazing performance was backed up by the g-men s tenacious defense which was led by defensive ends jason pierre-paul osi umenyiora and justin tuck all of which kept tom brady under heavy pressure the entire game and also caused a early safety which caused a major momentum swing in favor of the giants giant s coach tom coughlin who was under a lot of scrutiny during the regular season not only coached the giants into the super bowl he silenced all of his critics and is almost guaranteed a contract renewal winning this super bowl added to his resume giving him two super bowl titles fish when the principal and teacher faculty come across all of the school s lockers filled with fish it s going to be pretty hard to point fingers at just one person the faculty will also be very curious of the peculiar fishy smell which adds even more suspense to the whole prank another good hypothetical prank would be sed the pros of sed would be less damage to school property hopefully less punishment less money and time and a heck of a lot less of a smell the main downfall to the prank would be the fact of less participation too many students would be deterred by the idea due to the fact of getting caught now to the whole point of the prank sed stands for senior early dismissal the idea of the prank is for all the seniors to pick a random time to simultaneously stand up walk out of class and leave school the actions that the teachers would take are unpredictable yet it s not likely that they could stop the whole senior class especially if all the seniors stick together and go at the same time after the thoughts of fishy lockers and sed have processed through your both of which were with the giants this was patriot s coach bill belichick s fifth super bowl appearance of which both of his losses came from the hands of the giants it seems like the giants have the patriot s number when it comes to the playoffs this year s game was exciting all the way to the end of which was capped off by a hail mary attempt by tom brady to rob gronkowski which was broken up by the giants in the end zone all in all super bowl xlvi was a very exciting rematch that will definitely go down in the history books as one of the greatest super bowls ever played by brooke trice it s a high school tradition to have a senior prank it s sort of like leaving a mark on the school and the better the prank the bigger mark left therefore if it was possible to prank the school hypothetically of course what would be the perfect prank there have been many ideas passed along for senior pranks this year the fishy locker prank consists of a lot of raw fish and many nice closed up yet slightly vented and heavily scented lockers imagine how lovely the school would smell full of raw fish especially after a couple of days more to laugh about with this prank is the discovery of the hypothetical senior pranks mind its time for one more hypothetical senior prank school for sale is the last but surely not the least of the pranks in mind this prank is quite self explanatory basically the students will put their very own school up for sale conveniently the school already has a letter board out front so it s only missing a few words by writing for sale nice and spacious 20 baths 78 rooms multiple walk in closets huge kitchen and dining area two gyms personal auditorium and library the school would basically sell itself although this is the real world and the school can t really be sold like that it would provide everyone with a good laugh finally the conclusion comes down to three great hypothetical senior pranks fishy lockers early senior dismissal and school for sale unfortunately these are all hypothetical pranks meaning they won t be done since the pranks are not being pulled we don t get to enjoy the laughter and satisfaction it would bring but it does mean there is no need for any punishments plus there are other more appropriate ways to leave a mark on the school!

feb-march 2012 spending less money on clothes means buying more leaving a store with a huge bag of clothes and some money in hand is a way better feeling than spending your life s savings on one brand new cute top also along with being cheap it s original and different you would be surprised at some things you can find in goodwill of course everyone has their own taste and style which makes thrift stores a great shopping place for everyone because of the varieties of clothing in my opinion being different is what makes you you the same goes for an outfit a different original outfit is going to attract my eyes way quicker than a new shirt from hollister putting some personality into your clothing creates a whole new appearance for a person everyone is constantly searching for new ways to have fun one way is to start designing your own outfits a lot of people have become more artsy and familiar with various ways to give their clothes their own little touch a small but trendy way to leave your finger print on a cute shirt is to cut out a square from a stylish shirt such as plaid and sew it as a pocket onto a tank top or other shirt you have if you do not have the resources or ability to mend and sew your own clothes you can always find cute accessories at the store there are a lot of cute old belts pocket book scarves etc that you can find at thrift stores but some people may not take the time to search for them searching for the craftiest clothes and most original clothes are my favorite part of goodwill some people may think a downfall to everyone starting to bring vintage back is the fact everyone is doing it it is not a bummer because we re recycling old things and keeping the life of traditional and once loved styles alive it creates unity amongst people and lets us truly display our originality thrift store from page 10 page 11 lights camera action the oscars by tanner hawkins on thursday may 16th 1929 the hollywood roosevelt hotel in los angeles california held the first ever academy awards ceremony this event was hosted by president of the academy of motion picture arts and sciences douglas fairbanks tickets to the event were priced at five dollars a piece and only 270 people attended the ceremony which lasted approximately 15 minutes at this point in time only 12 academy awards were given and an actor or actress could be awarded for numerous movie appearances rather than only a certain film like the awards given nowadays the event was not broadcasted on television or radio that s hard to believe considering about 38 million people have watched the academy awards every year for the past 7 years since the first awards ceremony the event best known as the oscars has been an annual event over the years three films have the honor of receiving the highest number of awards in a single year which is 11 oscars these three films are the 1952 film benhur james cameron s titanic in 1997 and peter jackson s lord of the rings return of the king in 2003 these are all followed by the 1961 musical west side story which received 10 oscars walt disney holds the record for the highest number of individual oscars awarded in his lifetime he received 20 oscars but he was also awarded with 6 more after passing away several actors have won up to two oscars but only two gentlemen jack nicholson and walter brennan have won 3 oscars for best acting in a leading and/or supporting role standing out from the crowd actress katherine hepburn is the only by tyler persinger actress of all time to win 4 oscar awards for i remember
