g-wagen news best in class the g-class the magazine 4wheelfun crowns the g-class as 2009 superstar stuttgart the legendary mercedes-benz g-class is continuing to rake in award after award thirty years after it first appeared on the automotive scene what is by far the longest serving mercedes-benz passenger-car model series is celebrating its successes in the 2009 superstars readers poll run by the specialist journal 4wheelfun and the classics of the future vote organised by the magazine motor klassik these honours serve to underline the cult status enjoyed by the g-class readers of the off-road magazine 4wheel fun ensured that the gclass romped its way to victory by a good margin in the luxury segment of the 2009 superstar poll some 34 percentof the votes went to this ever-youthful classic putting a clear distance between the gclass and its competitors this is the second time that the assertive off-roader has won this title the first time being in 2007 following on from previous victories in 2003 and 2007 the mercedes-benz g-class has now been named classic of the future in 2009 too by readers of motor klassik no less than 16,184 readers awarded their votes to mercedes models in six out of 14 categories with the g-class winningby a particularly wide margin the original version of the vehicle dating back to 1979 dominated the competition with an impressive 29.9 percent of votes in its class and the current g-class model was able to cut an equally fine figure picking up nearly 25 percent of the votes that s twice as many as the vehicle which took second place for an incredible sixth time after 2001 2006 2007 and 2008 readers of off road have once again bestowed the title off-roader of the year on this automotive icon the glk awarded environmental certificate tÜv sets seal of approval on distinctive compact suv stuttgart spring 2009 sees the glk receive not only a number of new items of equipment but also a special distinction compact and distinctive it is the first mercedes-benz suv model family to receive the sought-after environmental certificate in accordance with iso standard 14062 in awarding the certificate the independent specialists at the tÜv test organisation have once again recognised the company`s commitment to environmental protection as also laid down in the policy guidelines for the entire daimler group these require the premium manufacturer to go much further than merely considering the environmental effects which a vehicle has while it is actually in use instead the entire lifecycle from development through the production process and the use phase right up to disposal is examined and optimised the environmental certificate is based on a complete life cycle assessment of the glk which comprises some 40,000 separate processes in addition to the glk the a b c and s-class models have already been awarded the tÜv süd environmental certificate the certification to iso standard 14062 applies to all glk models the mercedes benz glk 220 cdi blueefficiency was used as the basis for calculating a range of parameters including the energy requirement and emissions over a distance of 200,000 kilometres the results for the compact suv were extremely positive it consumed just 6.7 litres of diesel per hundred kilometres 176 g co2/km and performed to a higher standard than that required by the eu 5 emission limits which come into force in september 2009 factors optimised through the blueefficiency strategy include aerodynamics rolling resistance vehicle weight and energy management what`s more all glk models are also compatible with future fuels they are already designed to meet the requirements of eu plans to increase the biofuel content a bioethanol component of 10 percent e10 is permissible for petrol engines while diesel engines are able to run without any reservation on fuel with a 10-percent biofuel component comprising 7 percent biodiesel b7 fame and 3 percent hydrogenated vegetable oil the glk range at a glance at 7 7g-tronic seven-speed automatic transmission depends on equipment model emissions standard glk 220 cdi 4matic eu 5 glk 350 cdi 4matic eu 4 glk 300 4matic eu 5 glk 350 4matic eu 5 cyl 4 cc 2143 kw/hp at rpm nm at rpm trans 0 100 at7 8.8 sec max km/h 205 l/100 km combined 6.7-6.9 125/170 400 3200-4800 1400-2800 165/224 3800 170/231 6000 200/272 6000 540 1600-2400 300 2500-5000 350 2400-5000 v6 2987 at7 7.5 sec 220 7.9-8.4 v6 2996 at7 7.6 sec 210 10.2-10.5 v6 3498 at7 6.7 sec 230 10.5-10.8 6 g-wagen 01/09

new long range tank for the g a large number of outback treks involve long distances between fuel outlets jerry cans are dangerous difficult to store and not as convenient as a long-range fuel tank fitting a long-range fuel tank is a common modification and there are not many good manufacturers fort he mercedes g this new stainless steel tank will be in the shop from orc germany soon there are a number of outback treks involving travelling distances of over 1000 kms without the ability to source fuel or supplies trying to carry a large number of jerry cans is not only physically difficult but they are also very heavy and dangerous things to have inside the vehicle too many jerry cans on the roof racks create a weight and centre-of gravity shift problem each loaded can weighs 25kgs jerry cans are also very difficult to lift up and take down carrying a large amount of fuel enables you greater choice in when to buy your next load of fuel you may be able to pass a few expensive locations and opt for larger towns where price and quality may be better many aboriginal communities do not sell petrol diesel only so range is an important trip-planning factor if you are diy inclined you may be able to fit your long-range tank yourself but every good car workshop can do it for sure the orc tank has 70-litre capacity it is generally suggested however that the distributor fits a replacement tank some aspects of the installation require careful consideration such as extending the fuel sender and lifting the tank into position on your mercedes g g-wagen 01/09 7

g-wagen jacky ickx the white giant fully offroad action with the legendary 280ge 1983 the ex-f1 driver and sixtimes le mans winner jacky ickx proved his exceptional talent even off road the g-class he brought the greatest honor that an suv can reach the victory in the mother of all rallies the paris-dakar since the g was just four years old but the car get lost daimler sold it to ickx and he sold it again so the legendary original is somewhere but to keep this historic victory gmodel expert and g-wagen foun der joerg sand build this vehicle as a replica again in a similar project he reconstructed together with vw the volkswagen dakar winner iltis vw 183 of 1980 experience was available together with the press department of daimler texaco germany michelin and hella the project starts in november 2006 it take until may 2007 to build a 100 true copy of the ickx dakar 280ge as the base served a original 280 ge station a short version from the year 1982 the car was found in switzerland a rare rust-free 280ge even in the original white nevertheless he acknowledged the vehicle completely and re-varnished it ad add the racing specials chassis and powertrain were outdated sand even reconstructs the original pasting former employees of the daimler ag experimental department gives advice for the rebuilding and they continuously contributed valuable information on the vehicle in his victory the legendary jacky ickx listened to the announcements of his navigator the french film star claude brasseur but compared to today`s dakar race the car was largely series standard already 1982 showed the team ickx brasseur in a similar vehicle the 5th place in the paris-dakar marathon rally 1983 followed the victory after arduous 21 days and 14,000 kilometers of desert steppe mountains and jungles it is still the biggest sporting success of the g-class currently the factory teams race in prototypes at the dakar rally the g is the world`s only unchanged series produced vehicle witch the dakarrally won jacky ickx also for the victory remained with the only mercedes-dakar victory although he afterwards with porsche and peugeot factory here several operations going wet and wild 10 g-wagen 01/09

went the six-cylinder engine m 110 contributed 220 hp they built special camshafts in and did some work at the gasket even the air intake and exhaust was changed in untertuerkheim which are parts of w126 s-class used in the replica performed today however a 170-horsepower propelling his service record powerful the group a-exhaust system other motor sports changes like a bonnet doors and front fender made of a lightweight grp as well as custom manufacturing aluminum in the aerodynamics additions to the front and rear the tailgate and the radiatorprotection followed due to the extreme pressures of the rally the vehicle has a reinforced front axle for a safe race rally-recaro seats with schroth-racing belts special michelin tires provided for sand excavation in the desert besides the glass windows were all made of extremely lightweight plexiglas in the interior of the car to protect a stable roll cage the vehicle had a specially tuned suspension with bilstein shock absorbers and eibach springs except for the factory engine tuning can be found in all the features of a replica again to ensure even today hella rally 3000 additional headlights for good visibility at night stages but now the drivers feeling of the rally-replica the entry on the roll cage in the narrow recaro shells is still a bit difficult especially because it on the lightweight fiberglass doors can not shore but then you sit it is also quite comfortable after putting on safety with the six-point belts follows the rotation on the ignition key after two attempts the six-cylinder starts somewhat reluctant to send only then under

g-wagen jacky ickx the white giant the dakar-rally winner at the german autoshow hellish noise in a troubled idle to expire a careful occurs on the accelerator brings the double camshaft engine only true to life from the hellish roar of the sports exhaust pipe are camels and hyenas oohm neighbor`s dogs and cats even in kilometers warned here comes the dakarwinner so first gear and go the acceleration of 0-100 is good ten seconds the noise is crying out for a repeat all courses through to land it in fourth gear there`s no more maximum speed is the g at 6,500 rpm 185 km h which incidentally without a hearing anything than noise the maximum speed reaches of the g only on the cultivation of aerodynamics at the rear incidentally also the lower consumption by more than two liters per 100 kilometer we are moving first into a area to go off road the car is safe with 80-90 km h on dirt tracks also in deep holes then a big jump we are airborne a soft landing and we again sovereign land on the runway paris dakar feeling live that makes so much fun that you do not want to stop the stable chassis with two solid axles to massive longitudinal drivers coil springs and telescopic shock absorbers every copes center the mercedes g w 460/461 and 1999 still has a switchable four drive wheel not fulltime at normal ride is there 12 g-wagen 01/09

g-wagen g280cdi 6x6 g280cdi 6x6 up close by john kenny for those of us who are already attracted to the purposeful boxiness of the mercedes-benz g-wagen you will understand when i say that the g280cdi 6x6 is one sexy looking all wheel drive in amongst a gaggle of other very mean looking g s the 6x6 definitely stands out by virtue of its extended length if nothing else i had been invited to look over the evaluation g280cdi s that had been the clincher for the recently november 2008 signed australian defence force adf contract the vast majority of vehicles being delivered to the adf will be in cab chassis format in both 4x4 and 6x6 format there will also be a double cab variant and these will be fitted with various interchangeable modules being built by www varleygroup.com here in australia these modules will include a brilliant ambulance troop carriers with very safe side facing seating command centers radio vans and many more impressive units there will also be a number of wagon bodied vehicles however these will actually be built on the 3120mm wheelbase rather than the standard 2850mm that we are more used to while the prototype vehicles here at the moment are to euro-4 emissions standard the adf vehicles will all be to the 2010 euro-5 emissions rating the most apparent differences will be to the top of the v6 where there will be significant extra plumbing to deal with the recirculation of the exhaust gasses.this extra plumbing may require at least one additional bonnet vent there is also likely to be an additional radiator behind the rhs headlight with exit vent on the rhs guard a new high volume snorkel is also being developed to provide the necessary volume of air to the euro-5 motor the 6x6 in development development work on the adf g is not over yet and there are still a few hurdles for the engineers at mercedesbenz to overcome one of these relates to the need for the australian military vehicles to be able to cope with multiple salt-water fording events fairly untypical in most countries but when you your only roads around some of our northern areas are the beaches you can see why this capability has been specified the first australian vehicles are to be built later this year small numbers only from which the adf will finalise their specifications.at this stage the vehicles will be fitted with the ashtaroth wheels as shown on the 6x6 in the photos as standard although it is likely that some special purpose vehicles will be ordered with the optional hutchinson wheels all vehicles will be fitted with a high volume compressor coupled to a small tank the wheels will also be fit ted with additional high volume valves on the rims to aid with rapid pressure up/down situations there is an individual air-hose housed near each wheel which will provide the ability to increase or decrease tyre pressure via the compressor and tank to a preset amount a special military spec warn winch will be fitted as required i was at the mercedes-benz australia/pacific mb au/pac headquarters in melbourne australia where the evaluation/test vehicles were gathered together for a short period before being flung off to other potential markets for assessment and back to the adf for further testing the 6x6 is a new development for the g and has been developed specifically for the australian contract but will now also be made available to all military/government markets in 461 guise only while there have been other 6x6 g-wagens for example the christian de leotard aftermarket versions this is the first production model developed at the graz production facility essentially the mechanicals are as per the 4x4 variant ie the common rail 280 v6 diesel engine a detuned version of the 320 cdi version from the passenger vehicle range attached through the 5speed semi-automatic transmission to the standard vg180 transfer case 14 g-wagen 01/09

of course in this case there is an additional differential driving the rear wheels the vehicle is constant 6 wheel drive with all diff s being fully lockable the main difference is that the 3rd differential locks and unlocks in conjunction with the 2nd that is it is not lockable individually i cannot envisage a situation where this would be a detriment and there are the positive aspects such as the same control layout across the 4x4 6x6 range etc the second and third differentials are connected via a uni jointed tail-shaft and it is the 2nd or middle differential that bears some further investigation as this is the one through which the third axle is ultimately driven the way this has been achieved is via a power divider on the second axle differential and throughout the grueling military testing this has proved to be tough and virtually trouble free the prototype 6x6 s had both covered around 20,000 kms during testing and for such newly developed vehicles it is commendable that there have been precious few issues particularly with the drive system the outskirts of melbourne it was a warm afternoon around 34c and with the windows up and the a/c on it was remarkably quiet in the bare cab considering there were no floor coverings and only a basic headlining i was surprised at how quiet the vehicle was considering it s recent testing i was also impressed at how few rattles and other noises that there were this vehicle was not fitted with a snorkel although i believe the adf spec vehicles will be and compared to the snorkel equipped 270 cdi i had been in previously there was comparatively no induction roar i believe that the new euro-5 snorkel design will be higher and a much larger diameter than the snorkel we commonly see on the military g-wagens and so the induction noise may be reduced a bit once we had cleared the outskirts of town craig pulled over for me to take the wheel having stepped out of my recaro equipped 460 300gd i was actually pleasantly surprised at the actual comfort of the rather basic looking vinyl seats they are certainly a cut above the seats i am more familiar with from the early 460 s even though this vehicle is fitted with the extended cab i did find that the seat travel was a little g-wagen 01/09 decent driving pleasure i was anxious to get out on the road and mb au/pac s military vehicle specialist craig deftly wheeled us through to 15
