kia ora koutou in this newsletter you will read about a number of golden sands firsts ­ our first hangi our first kapa haka group our first enrolment in icas exams our first media team our first top school team and our children s first exposure to maths badges we endeavour to offer our children the opportunity to try a number of different things in the hope that we can ignite a passion or further an interest we are trying to spread the things that we offer across sporting academic creative and cultural pursuits these extracurricular activities are offered either at one of the brain breaks or after school hours new enrolments welcome to the new families and children that have joined golden sands school in the last couple of weeks a special welcome to rachael jessica rydge and jasmyn who have started in sheppard recently we are currently trying to plan for the number of new students enrolling in our new entrant rooms if you know anyone who has a 4 year old that is intending on starting them with us please encourage them to bring in their enrolment forms thank you for your help kapa haka a big thank you must go to natalie taute who is going to work with our children to create a kapa haka group those children that expressed an interest in kapahaka began on friday with a simple waiata we had about 40 children in attendance thank you also to mrs collins for being the guitar support maths badges ­ number nut last week we had a meeting for children at level 2 maths or above that were interested in working on some maths badges i had about 30 children turn up to the meeting which is fantastic interested children may have brought home the activity sheet activities will be typically worked on in children s own time and i will mark them on a wednesday when they complete the required number of activities 6 to the expected standard they earn a badge and a certificate the certificate is provided on completion and if your child would like a badge these can be ordered for $10 this is a voluntary activity for those who love maths icas exams this year we are offering the nsw exams for years 4-5 students the exams are best suited to more able students and provide great opportunities to win awards the exams are in english science maths writing spelling and computer studies children can enter one or all of them depending on interest letters explaining the awards and associated costs have been given to children fees can be paid to lisa in the office our first hangi gss at the end of this term we are organising our very first school hangi we are hoping to have it on saturday 31 march so keep that date free if you are able to help with preparation or donation of meat or vegetables please contact us in the office and we will let the organisers know thanks to nat taute for organising this exciting event top schools congratulations to the following children who have been selected to enter the top schools competition at paengaroa school jesse amott captain kaelin taute virginija werder stellan dobbe non-travelling reserves olivia drent cody martin matt dawson pearl upton-poole logan edwards indrea werder madeline lomas bethan adkins the top school competition will be taking place at paengaroa school on sunday 18 march 2012 from 10am-3pm it is a great fun family day for all there are gala stalls fun children s activities and the family could support golden sands school golden sands school media team congratulations to the following students who have been selected for our school media team ana reynal-o connor hannie mastny cassie taylor kayla smith holly mccullough isabelle amott pearl upton-poole virginija werder olivia drent indrea werder the team will be responsible for recording the weekly news at gss they will be taking photos writing articles and publishing them on our website under the news section for you to read we are excited about our students taking a lead role in this area.
