0 123 4 3 vancouver bc canada 56+2 partnership of peter kiewit sons and flatiron constructors 123 7/82 highway infrastructure upgrade design-build 92 32 overall project management and design responsibility detailed design of highway drainage interchange bridge retaining wall and other structures and construction support and oversight september 2008 ­ 2013 5 3 5 onshore works $1.6 billion 2 9 tony purdon ­ project director chris mealing ­ project manager marek buksowicz ­ structures manager tony martin ­ sr project engineer thomas ho ­ civil lead ana lim ­ commercial manager aled griffiths structures lead james scott geotechnical lead 123 2;3 8 the trans-canada highway highway 1 is the major route linking vancouver to the rest of british columbia and canada the port mann/highway 1 project is believed to be the largest and one of the most challenging highway infrastructure projects in canada involving challenging geotechnical conditions strict environmental obligations and constant traffic flow it involves replacing the dominant port mann bridge across the fraser river widening 37 km of the highway through the eastern suburbs of vancouver reconstructing 11 interchanges constructing or rehabilitating 42 onshore bridges and totally rebuilding the complex cape horn/lougheed highway interchange the project also includes construction of the new fraser heights connector to link highway 1 with the recently completed golden ears crossing and the planned south fraser perimeter road the port mann/highway 1 project is a critical component of british columbia s gateway program established in response to the impact of growing regional congestion and predicted growth through 2031 demand management and congestion-reduction measures include highoccupancy vehicle lanes transit and commercial vehicle priority access to highway on-ramps improvements to the cycling network and electronic tolls on the port mann bridge the project has a capital value of $2.46 billion with the onshore works representing approximately 60 percent of this value the anticipated design and construction period is approximately five years 62 hmm is the senior partner in a joint-venture with mmm group that leads a team of 12 engineering firms in the design of all the onshore works hmm has overall responsibility for the design effort and manages a broad multi-disciplinary team of consultants and technical specialists hmm is also responsible for the detailed design and construction oversight of significant portions of the highway and on-shore structures 123 6 extensive highway improvements including multiple interchanges onshore bridges and other works total reconstruction of the extremely complex cape horn/lougheed highway interchange at the west end of the port mann bridge including re-location of much of cp rail s sapperton rail yard complex management of multiple engineering firms and a broad range of consultants and technical specialists challenging geotechnical conditions strict environmental obligations constant traffic flow that must be maintained at all times during construction kiewit port mann highway 1 project080311
