phoenix kids care for their school for their community for their world celebrating 30 years of service to our community community service learning and civic engagement have always been important parts of the phoenix experience the school s presence in salem s downtown its close relationship with area businesses and leaders and its flexible curriculum have positioned phoenix to respond to many opportunities in support of the local and global community community service learning enables students to engage in projects that excite them and allows them to make the important decisions it is all about empowering students to become leaders and contributors to their communities now and into the future such an educational approach creates an authentic learning environment embedding skills necessary for a successful education and for shaping young people who not only read write and compute but who also care for others stand up to help others and are proactive in their school local and world communities they are learning how to lead their generation in making the world a better place for all we are proud to celebrate 30 years of giving to our community and truly thank all who have joined us in opening doors to the world for our students throughout the years it takes the whole community to raise a child to make a difference 1

salem maritime national historic site/the salem partnership/essex heritage commission · built a scale model of the friendship now on display at the national maritime historic site sailed it in the constitution gardens pond on the mall in washington d.c · sent student-designed note cards and letters to senate appropriations committee to advocate for the funds needed to build the ship · initiated kids build friendship the public-private partnership of school children in salem and local businesses to raise funds for the friendship figurehead together raising $18,000 · made flags for the rigging · created two original plays to the farthest point and huzzah to teach local school children and the public about the history of the friendship · participated in the commissioning ceremony and other annual events · contributed to the development of overnight programs for school children · held signs in support of historic preservation this treasure matters 14 15
