we were anxious nervous and eager to step on stage and considering it was going to be our first live performance together as a group we were certainly terrified of the audience s reaction on july 1st 2010 the year 11 drama students participated in flannofest for the first time it was an amazing way to start july and it won t easily be forgotten flannofest is a festival run by the q thea tre a t the joan sutherland performing arts centre that gave drama students in nsw the chance to perform on an actual stage where real professionals perform every week the students were allowed to perform in multiple genres such as comedy satire and film noir we competed against other western suburb high schools although we were unable to watch the other performances it still allowed us to gain experience and further our drama skills a part of our drama syllabus is to perform as a group and having the chance to participate in something as big as flannofest gave our whole class a fun new and exciting way to approach the topic as a drama class we all decided to do stand up comedy and we all knew that it d be difficult but with the help of a comedy professional named brent thorpe and our wonderful drama teacher ms plant our performance was a success our sketch was set in `centrelink fairfield and each of us took turns acting out a particular character and many of the characters were stereotypical to australian life what i mean by this is that the characters that we played were the type of people you would come across when walking down the street or maybe even your next-door neighbour i remember stepping on the stage with the music blazing in our ears adrenaline pumping through our veins and the smile that bloomed off my face i felt so amazed and proud not only for my self but i was more proud of my classmates because after we put in so much effort and time into the performance we were able to perform to the best of our ability although we had technical difficulties we kept in character and hardly anyone noticed the flaws we acted like true professionals i would also like to say a special thank you to ms plant for dedicating a lot of her time into planning and organizing this event for us she will surely be missed but now it s a new term and we have a new teacher ms eaton i cannot wait to see what else we can achieve ma cristina aguilar page 14
