life as a flapper african american flappers were women of the 1920 s who showed their ankles and later on their knees flappers were usually northern urban single young middle-class women many of these women had steady jobs in the changing economy most flappers worked as clerks increase of phone usage required more operators most women worked in department stores these women were needed on the stores floor to tend to the most important customers these were richer women these were flappers by day by night they were very different.

flappers by night by night these women would indulge in city life these women would constantly spend time in jazz clubs as well as vaudeville shows speakeasies or secret clubs were common to see flappers in attendance these women developed care free attitudes towards the prohibition ironically these women would consume more alcohol in the decade it was illegal than ever before smoking became a common habit amongst flappers with the power of the nineteenth amendment women saw to it that to eliminate the use of alcohol.
