our purpose we seek to empower the young muslim community to achieve remarkable heights of success how will this be achieved through providing structured mentoring and trusting relationships whereby secondary school students are paired with successful and caring muslim adults who will contribute ongoing guidance support and encouragement why is this mentoring 4 it will inspire students to program essential become active 1 it encourages students to put independently theory into practice with the support members of the community of individuals who have had similar 5 it invites students to openly experiences and have triumphed express personal or academic 2 it provides a casual environment difficulties for gaining essential islamic knowledge and self-development skills 3 it is designed to encourage the best in each and every student igniting dreams together 4

how effective is mentoring outlook and confidence australian research conducted by the victorian youth mentoring alliance suggests that mentoring can have an incredible impact on the lives of youths one hundred and fifty three young mentees aged between twelve to twenty five were surveyed through the process behaviour and relationships the findings revealed that 90 of the respondents felt positive about their future due to their experience with their mentor additionally 87 of these young people agreed or strongly agreed that as a result of mentoring they are a lot more confident while 86 of the respondents indicated that they interacted and got along better with people 125 respondents believed that they were more responsible strengthening the fire within to reach their full potential 5

how effective is mentoring school attendance and achievement of the 153 respondents 109 agreed that mentoring had inspired them to be more involved in community or social activities 79 felt that their attitude to school or work had improved 121 confirmed that their relationship with their mentor had helped them to establish future goals while 75 agreed that they had more knowledge about the education and training opportunities available to them as part of the survey individuals were questioned about how much their lives had changed as a result of mentoring these are some of their responses my life has changed as now i have somebody who i can talk to and lead me in a positive path in life having a mentor has given me a really good insight into what i want to achieve in life and how to go about achieving it being able to get help support and friendship from a mentor has made a big impact on me my mentor inspires me to do anything and to be the best at what i do igniting dreams together 6

how the program works mentoring focus igniting dreams together focuses on mentoring young people in the areas of community engagement character building career and schooling advice and building healthy relationships matching mentors and mentees as the program aims to build successful same-gender mentoring relationships mentors will be matched to mentees by taking into consideration their geographic proximity common interests similarities in personality and preference preferences the mentoring relationship should last at least one school year mentor requirements it is a policy that all mentors must attend recognised training mentors are expected to complete at least 6 hours of training to being matched each mentor will attend additional two-hour in-service training sessions at least twice per year these in-service sessions will be offered to each group at least quarterly mentoring structure igniting dreams together exists as a program under famsy s educational and training initiatives it provides one-to-one or group mentoring mentoring will take place in schools and community spaces strengthening the fire within to reach their full potential 7

who are our mentors non-judgemental attitudes a willingness to train using our thorough screening procedures we can assure you that our mentors are young muslim professionals and university students who have a desire to help people develop and succeed good communication skills trustworthiness the ability to be a role model mentor recruitment mentors will be recruited for their involvement in community organisations university islamic societies expressions of interest through marketing or recommendations from community members and parents potential mentors from monash university igniting dreams together 8

mentee requirements mentee population mentees will be secondary students between the ages of 12 to 17 who wish to participate in this program seeking to ignite their dreams together we expect prospective mentees to 1 be enthusiastic and willing to learn 2 attend one orientation and one group forming event 3 be present at every scheduled mentoring session 4 participate in two group events per year 5 maintain weekly correspondence and provide feedback requirement enjoy team activities with other mentoring groups strengthening the fire within to reach their full potential 11
