florence nightingale was born in 1820 her mother and father were on holiday in italy at the time they named her after the beautiful city of florence where she was born.

in victorian england girls from rich families were expected to marry and have children nobody thought they should work florence wanted a job that would help other people she thought that god had called her to this work.

when florence was young many people died from lots of diseases there were no medicines and people didn t know that disease was caused by germs they didn t know that germs grew in dirty conditions victorian hospitals were full of germs nurses were not trained and doctors used dirty equipment and didn t wash their hands.

when florence was 19 she visited a hospital in germany she decided she wanted to be a nurse her parents did not want her to work and be a nurse they had lots of arguments but finally they let her train to be a nurse she worked very hard florence was happy at last she was helping other people.

in 1853 florence became the manager of a hospital in london she was good at organising people she made lots of changes to the hospital next she began looking at ways of improving nursing.

in 1854 the crimean war began england france and turkey were fighting against russia thousands of wounded british soldiers were dying in the hospitals in the crimea there were not enough doctors and there were no nurses to look after the soldiers the government asked florence to take a group of nurses to the crimea to help.
