what is kama sutra by mercedes pelka the kama sutra is the world s oldest book on the pleasures of sensual living there is no one single author for the text it was originally compiled in the 3rd century by the indian sage vatsyayana who lived in northern india vatsyayana claimed to be a celibate monk and that his work in compiling all of the sexual knowledge of ages past was for him a form of meditation and contemplation of the deity written in a rather complex form of sanskrit the kama sutra is the only surviving textual account of that period of ancient indian history in scholarly circles it has been widely consulted by scholars trying to understand the society and social mores of that period the title of the text kama sutra literally means a treatise on pleasure far more complex than a mere listing of contortionist sexual positions the kama sutra provides a comprehensive manual of living for the good life although the central character of the kama sutra is the citizenry man-about-town the text was written to be read by and provide detailed advice for both men and women the basic tenet of the kama sutra is that in order for marriages to be happy both man and woman should be well-versed in the arts of pleasure both carnal and cerebral the topics explored include society and social concepts on sexual union about the acquisition of a wife about a wife about the wives of other men about courtesans and on the means of attracting others to yourself the book contains detailed advice on what a man must do to win over a woman what a woman must do to win over a man the states of a woman s mind the role of a go-between and the reasons why women might reject the advances of men in terms of choosing a mate the kama sutra advises on whether to consider fellow students or childhood friends it provides charts that categorize male and female physical types and their compatibility with their lover s body varieties of embracing kissing scratching biting oral sex and sexual intercourse are elaborated the text also incorporates instruction on extramarital relationships including with the wives of other men and devotes many pages to the methods of seduction and methods of extortion practiced by the courtesan finally in case all of that knowledge should fail in winning the love that one seeks the final chapter of the kama sutra contains recipes for tonics powders and foods that have the power to help attract others to oneself some people refer to the kama sutra as a marriage manual but it is a far cry from the monogamous and dutiful tomes that westerners produced as part of the proliferation of advice manuals in the victorian era one of the central figures of the kama sutra is the courtesan who must also master and practice a variety of arts in learning how to please and coerce her man what is especially unique about the kama sutra is that it maintains a special focus on creating pleasure for the woman a man who fails to provide and bring about those pleasures is subject to a woman s recourse that is to seek pleasure elsewhere where she may find it as the `original study of sexuality the kama sutra became

the fountainhead of all subsequent compilations including the 15th century ananga-ranga which is a revised version and builds upon vatsyayana s basic tenets yet because of the complex and rather inaccessible style of sanskrit in which it was written the kama sutra for many centuries fell into obscurity scholars of sanskrit and ancient india did not much consult it it was not until the late 19th century that the kama sutra again began to resume its former prominence in the textual traditions of india that resurgence came about after the 1870s when sir richard burton the noted linguist and arabic translator was working with his collaborators both indian and british on producing a translation of the ananga-ranga in pursuing the many references to vatsyayana with the text burton led the pundits back to the kama sutra and an english translation was produced burton s persistence in publishing the kama sutra in the west and the interest the text generated in both india and abroad has led to a proliferation of translations and versions of the original masterpiece.

patrick i met in may of 2010 on our first date we went to tusca in the southside works for dinner and drinks he passed my only real first date question of are you allergic to cats with flying colors so i decided he was worth getting to know we went dancing until 2am despite the fact that it was a thursday night and we both had work the next day patrick was lucky he gave me several drinks on our first date because had i been sober i probably wouldn t have agreed to a second date i always tell him on our first date i hated you on our second date i fell for you and on our third date i fell in love with you three weeks after we met i planned to tell patrick that i loved him my whole family was going to dc for my younger cousin s graduation party i knew a perfect spot in alexandria right on the water where i wanted to tell him long story short i whispered i love you patrick into his ear only to not get the same response back later that night i finally got my i love you from him and we ve been on the fast-track ever since patrick moved into my house with me and the cats about 5 months after we started dating and about 10 months into our relationship we were meeting with jewelers to design our gorgeous custom engagement ring being very non-traditional and crazy like i am we went to florida in july to start wedding planning we knew we wanted a wedding on the beach and since patrick is a teacher and has the summers off we couldn t wait for the ring to arrive to start planning in september after a nearly 7 month process to get the ring made patrick planned to come to a promotion i was working with my friends and ask me to marry him on the first day of fall turns out the bar ran out of the beer i was promoting so i left two hours earlier than expected throwing him into plan b mode he told me we were going to bar louie in station square for a late dinner when we got there two of my friends and my brother were there patrick asked my friend to take a picture of us by the dancing fountain then he started playing on his phone jagged edge s `meet me at the altar and unzipped his jacket to reveal a shirt he made that said marry me please on the front she said yes on the back since i absolutely hate most everything about weddings besides dancing and drinking our wedding is going to be very non-traditional i usually don t even refer to it as a wedding but rather a `celebration of love party on july 19 i will walk down the sand aisle in my gold pageant dress to the bret michaels song `all i ever needed while my prince charming in his yet to be determined pink shirt awaits me so we can read each other the vows we plan to write we will then enjoy an evening dancing to mostly 80s and 90s rock music with 35 of our closest friends and family members there will be no cake smashing no garter being worn i will not be throwing my black rose bouquet and none of the other lame wedding things i hate will be going down all we want is a day to share our love for each other with the people that mean the most to us we want to move to north carolina in the future and we ve discussed opening our own gym some day we ve loved and enjoyed every moment of our life together with a shared love for traveling we have starting seeing the world together ran our first full marathon in may of 2011 been to dozens of concerts sporting events and charity benefits and had an all-around great life with each other i love the way patrick just truly loves and embraces everything in life he lives his life to the fullest doesn t take a moment for granted and always looks for the positive he has inspired me to be more caring compassionate and a more positive person my life has changed so much for the better since meeting him and i could never imagine a life without him!

the restaurant critic waters edge pub many restaurants have given it a go at the hillside property in bridgewater lots of folks remember good ol boots where you could eat fresh peanuts and throw your shells right on the floor others before that tried but never succeeded for whatever reason and it almost seems the place is cursed for new comers scott little is the latest to try his luck at 1420 riverside drive in bridgewater where you will find the new waters edge pub formerly known as lil meleos which was located in beaver pa decorated in a rustic nautical theme with large windows offering a fantastic river view from the dining room and bar water s edge pub opened a couple of months ago with a menu including italian food steaks seafood pizza wings and the famous boars head sandwiches the new restaurant also attained a liquor license at the this location which will surely bring more business to an already phenomenal place to eat water s edge will be a great new place to go this spring because it also has dual-level outdoor seating for 150 guest with a pagoda-style bar on the edge of the river itself the property has been empty for about 5 1/2 years since muddy waters which had suffered through 2 floods before even being able to have their grand opening closed after a very short period of time of being in business frankie stella s italian bistro was the business there before that but had to shut down because of an august 2004 fire when the property was known as boots a texas theme eatery it was best recognized for its pappan s ark restaurant an unofficial beaver county landmark with its replica of an ark and animal statues including an large giraffe and large gorillas near the dining room this restaurant too had its share of flooding and fires forcing it to close that being said lots of folks have been afraid to take on the property scott little is a great business man though and knows his stuff he did some remarkable work that gave the new spot flare and charisma workers have since fixed the flood-damaged concrete wall along the river s bank but the cosmetic additions are the most exquisite and will surely draw new business the restaurant s landscaping includes a waterfall and sandstone boulders the site soon will include a boardwalk and wooden pirate ship where kids can play scott little wanted a place that would be kid friendly he himself has a 6-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter water s edge is just steps from the rivers boat docks which will be great come summer time for fishing families and boaters out for a day of fun water s edge pub is open from 11 a.m to 10 p.m mondays through wednesdays and 11 a.m to 2 a.m thursdays through saturdays so get down and say hello to my friend scott and try one of his awesome sandwiches or my favorite the black and blue steak salad with homemade garlic ranch whatever you re fancy it s all to die for march sce release party will be held at 2009 east carson street located on the south side district 3 is pittsburgh s newest place-to-be any night of the week fusing together the experiences of a sports bar and a nightclub district 3 is sure to give you what you desire from a night out on the town district iii
