the center east corridor project one of the most important railroad system in brazil was viable by coordinated actions from the operational consortium of the center east corridor the backbone of the corridor is formed by two railroads companies totalizing 1800 km of lines plus five ports located in the vicinity of vitoria capital of espirito santo state those railroads and ports had never operated before as an integrated system as a consequence very high transportation costs prevailed between central brazil and the coast due to the intensive utilization of the highway mode the reason for such lack of coordination was the inexistence of na organization to promote the joint operation of the system´s components and also because both railroads were state owned and somehow unable to compete in level ground with the agressive highway industry the consortium of the center east corridor was organized to fullfill this role the consortium is a private non-profit organization sponsored by over 50 companies ports railroads transportation trading warehousing stevedoring and shipping companies among others.

the center east corridor project in addition the governors of nine brasilian states formed a council of governors affording political support to the consortium enabling it to perform the role of na integrator and problem solver coordinating the relations among railroads and ports besides its basic role as a coordinator the consortium also helps to promote the development of its aea of influence through the council of governors the consortium keeps its actions in pace with state´s development plans and put out a continuous effort to atract investors to the area identifying opportunities of trade and investment and promoting them since the start of its operations in 1991 results have been remarkable for instance the cost to transport one ton of soyabeans between central brazil and coast was usd 70.00 now with the railroads working in association this figure is down to usd 27.00 port costs included as a consequence the commodities output jumped from 300,000 ton/year to 1,200,000 ton/year in two years.
