volume 3 issue 4 page 5 rocks soil and minerals by grant mahaffey on december 5th 2011 mrs bell came to our class to tell us about soil worms and rocks first she showed us a slideshow about how soil is made and used some types of soil like humus and loam are great for growing crops and plants then she took us outside to hold worms look at different types of soil and look at rocks at the worm center kids were afraid to hold the worms because they thought it was slimy at the soil center someone showed us different types of soil and we had to guess which two were the same guess what it was clay last at the rock center our teacher let us hold different types of rocks the hardest rock there was quartz by javier layne go to page 9 for the answers

page 6 no name calling week by myah mccottry no name calling week is a week where nobody calls anybody names james howe came up with this week because people called the misfits names he thought that name calling could really hurt some people name calling is a form of bulling if you are being bullied remember to stay safe say what you feel ask for help find a friend exit the area no name calling week goes from january 23rd to january 27th no name calling week is an opportunity to get away from name calling how students drive their teachers crazy by felicity gentry do you drive your teacher crazy teachers say this about their students every day here is what some students do to drive their teachers crazy they tell her or him that they don t have nice hair or clothing they shout out question to the teacher students aggravate other students they ask to go to the bathroom every minute they play around in the bathroom students tattletale on other students as much as possible they ask how do you spell while the teacher is giving a spell test when she or he says the next word they tell her or he is going too fast they sharpen their pencil when the teacher is talking student place tacks on his or her chair so he or she gets poked when he or she sits down don t do this at home or school you should be nice to your teachers seahorse facts seahorses mostly live in the tropics or along temperate coasts seahorses usually mate under a full moon mate means pairing up during mating they utter musical sounds soon after mating the female seahorse will lay eggs then the fewildcat pride by grace conn which means they are plants and meat to eat they use their long snout to suck up food but some people think they re safe but they are not because they are endangered save the seahorses male seahorse deposits her eggs into the male s small pouch to keep them safe to protect their family they can change colors to blend into their surroundings they have to eat too if they want survive they are omnivores

volume 3 issue 4 page 9 the polar bear plunge by isabella melton the polar bear plunge day is an event to raise money for charity and the homeless it is held on january 1st every year people go swimming in the winter in very cold water there are always a lot of people there over 200 armed service men and women take part in it in afghanistan the very first polar bear plunge was in san diego there were 3,000 people that did the polar bear plunge in san diego tybee island and tybrisa island are two of the beaches that do the polar bear plunge near savannah it is an unorganized new year s eve party challenge this year tybee island had the largest number of people wearing swimming caps for a guinness world record tybee has done it for three years now this year they started it at 11:45 a.m and it lasted for 10 minutes i sure would be very cold if i did the polar bear plunge i hope you don t do it or you would be freezing answers from page 5.

page 10 january is bath safety month by madeline morrow when we think of january we mostly think of a new year we also think of martin luther king jr but not many people think of january being bath safety month bath safety month may not feel important to some people but it really is the first rule before getting in a bath is to test the bathwater with your hand before you get in it the same thing goes for showers too many people have burned themselves because of this next you should remember that you should always gather everything you need before you get in the bath say you live in one of the most expensive houses in the world all of the furniture and the house together cost $1 billion one night you were in the bath on the 4th floor of the house you forgot your rubber duck it was in the basement you ruined almost 95 of the house because you were wet you had to pay a million dollars for it one of the most important rules to bath safety is to never leave a child under six years old unattended in the bath the bath may not sound as deadly as it looks but if you only look away for a ½ second a baby could have slipped under the water and the child could drowned hope you ll follow these precautions so you can have relaxing baths harry potter sorcerer of stone a book review by sienna harrold have you ever read harry potter and the sorcerer of stone well i have the author of this book is j.k rowling it is about a boy named wildcat pride harry potter he lives with his uncle and aunt and also their son dudley he goes to a magic place called hogwarts and learns magic and how to be a wizard next he gets to try to play quidditch and he makes it if you want to find out what happens then read it!

volume 3 issue 4 page 11 national do nothing day by vanessa peres every january there is a holiday called do nothing day it is on the 16th and it s a day of doing nothing it is an unevent that you can celebrate by doing nothing it started in 1973 by newspaperman harold pullman coffin there is even a book called the donothing day it is about a stuffed bear who tries hard to decide what to do with his day never noticing the adventures he s having along the way the author of this book is joleene naylor here are some things you can do on do nothing day you could not sleep not play not watch t.v not go to the store not go to work and not go to school answers from page 7.
