saint john baptist de la salle saint john baptist de la salle an educational visionary touched nearly every corner of the earth people of all faiths have come to embrace his pedagogy and spirituality la salle could not have predicted that at the beginning of the 21st century 5,000 brothers and 75,000 colleagues worldwide would be serving nearly 1 million students in 900 educational institutions in over 80 countries in stark contrast are the events leading up to the last days of la salle s life in 1719 stripped of his priestly faculties the fledgling institute was without any canonical authority his religious brothers were as unsure of their status in the church and society as was its founding in 1680 despite the praise and admiration by students and their parents his work with the new community of brothers continued to be mocked and resented by many in the church and in french society why de la salle was determined that every student rich or poor would receive the same quality education in the same classrooms and at no cost many argue that these christian schools were the true first public schools de la salle and his brothers were breaking down class barriers during a period when french society was centered on these socio-economic classifications recognizing that poverty ignorance and oppression spawn crime sin and destruction an education was the key element in breaking this unending cycle children from poor families needed a basic education that would enable them to earn a decent living and to live in dignity despite la salle s death and the pressures coming from the church and society the brothers stepped up to the plate and immediately secured the necessary canonical permissions to be recognized as a religious order in the church new leadership stabilized existing schools and its community of brothers first in a series of articles next issue looking at the lasallian legacy at the hall 4 w w w .c a lv e rt hall comm uch has been written about john baptist de la the education practices developed and adapted by de la salle and his brothers are considered standard practice today including developing special education programs creating schools for training teachers using the native language of the students rather than latin grouping students according to achievement reporting students progress on a regular basis instructing an entire class of students simultaneously involving parents in the school and giving students meaningful roles in the classroom today the education practices developed and adapted by de la salle and his brothers are considered standard practice the characteristics of a lasallian educational community fellowship and friendliness are carried through in relationships between teachers and their students and with one another there is a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood filled with mutual respect and of collaboration among faculty staff students and administration the words of saint la salle continually guide us in this mission one of the main concerns of those who instruct others is to be able to understand their students and to discern the right way to guide them there are those who call for much patience those who need to be stimulated and spurred on this guidance requires understanding and discernment of spirits qualities you should frequently and earnestly ask of god for they are most necessary for you in the guidance of those placed in your care inspired by la salle s continuing faith and zeal and the lasallian charism a great gift of the spirit to the church has been given to us the prayerful words proudly proclaimed by teacher and student alike join in prayer saint john baptist de la salle pray for us live jesus in our hearts forever salle a sainted french priest who founded the brothers of the christian schools in the late 17th century his educational legacy has brother joseph juliano fsc
