message from the president the importance of believing sr patricia wolf rsm 62 ver christmas break i read a lovely essay among friends mary and elizabeth which offered the following reflection a wise woman once taught me that life is organized by both steps and belief we take a series of stepslearning discovering becoming familiar with how things workand then there comes a time when we have to leave the safety of what is familiar and take a leap of faith at such a moment the author states that it is another s belief in us that moves us forward we get to a step around the age of fifteen o st catharine academy 2250 williamsbridge road bronx ny 10469-4891 phone 718-882-2882 fax 718-231-9099 www.scahs.org when someone else has to believe us into the next step i read these words and paused while the text is about friendship my mind leapt to our 350 freshman and sophomores who are fifteen or so and who are very much immersed in this dynamic of growth and exploration academically the freshman course of study is largely traditional governed by new york state regents requirements yet it is flexible enough to challenge the advanced student to honors courses by grade 10 the sophomores have figured out how sca works sort of and are faced with some serious choices that have implications for the future beyond high school the advantage of intensive academics evidence shows that students with more intensive academic programs have an advantage when it comes to acceptances and scholarships at leading colleges and universities one of the academic decisions facing our fifteen year old students and their parents revolves around the challenge of whether to stay with the familiaror be believed into the capacity to do more the familiar may be less stressful but the leap of faith into the unknown can enhance one s advantage for college acceptances and scholarships annette stabile s 08 reflection on her years at sca see pp 8-9 emphatically highlights how dedicated teachers and counselors encouraged her and believed her into the next step which was to embrace the demanding advanced placement ap curriculum that is paying off so well for her in college such a choice requires a willingness to leave comfort zones and the safety of sure success in a system where full tuition academic based scholarships have been tied to class rank and specifically to the top three students in each grade level sca administration has questioned the fairness of this approach that has rewarded class rank over course difficulty that is about to change sca scholars program effective with the 2012 academic year sca is initiating the sca scholars program where merit based scholarships are tied to academic rigor weighted grade point average and full participation in service and enrichment opportunities students who are selected for participation in the sca scholars program will be required to take honors or ap courses in english math science and social studies as well as three years of a modern language and four years of theology their extra-curricular enrichment will concentrate on learning opportunities with institutions that focus on history science culture and the arts while service reflects not just hours but the formation of the habit of service to maintain the scholarship which for now will be equal to 55 percent of the current tuition scholars will be required to maintain a weighted grade point average of 94 percent a core element in the new program is the role played by faculty and administration who empower students because they believe in them whether today s catharinite attends sca on an academic scholarship needs based tuition assistance or pays full tuition she should graduate from sca knowing that she was believed into being more than she dared to dream possible v cc cc sr patricia wolf rsm 62 president sr ann m welch rsm principal angela cabassa director alumnae relations cathy bostley database manager darryl bullock ph.d development associate contributing writers sr rhea bean rsm darryl bullock ph.d angela cabassa ingrid v williams 12 sr patricia wolf rsm 62 2

celebrating 125 years the spelling of our name which catharine raditionally catholic schools and other institutions are named after a saint or someone who is held up as an example to be imitated this is certainly true in the case of st catharine academy but one rightly asks which catharine is it catherine of genoa or catharine of siena or as some students think is it catherine mcauley like the question of the beginning date of the academy the question about which catherine is also one that is surrounded by ambiguity as we move toward the celebration of the school s 125th anniversary in 2014 a way for us to prepare for that event is to raise up some of the questions of our history in the hopes that some of our alumnae may have recollections that will help us fill in some of our historical gaps many have tried to settle the question about which catherine by making the spelling of catharine the deciding fact after all who among us has not had to make a focused effort to spell the catharine of st catharine academy with that second letter a instead of an e unfortunately even historical documents of the sisters of mercy reveal an inconsistency in the spelling of catharine/catherine some pertinent history that leads us to look at tradition and historical understanding what was the intent of those who founded the school according to the archives of the sisters of mercy the pastor of the new parish of st catherine of genoa w 153rd st requested the help of the sisters of mercy in establishing the new parish the sisters responded and purchased a house on w 152 st for this purpose the pastor then advised the opening of an academy and on november 22nd the sisters took possession of this new branch which was dedicated to st catherine of genoa and the school was established this fact is the basis for the belief of some that despite the difference in spelling the catharine of st catharine academy is catherine of genoa this appears to be the more commonly held belief by alumnae from the original manhattan-based st catharine academy but not all would agree others like many alumnae from the bronx sca believe that catharine of siena is the catharine of st catharine academy they bolster their position by pointing to a once-existing school publication titled siena echoes many also remember the emphasis on the spelling of catharine and believe the reference was to catharine of siena what does it matter we could ask does it matter how we spell catharine or which catherine it is obviously from the perspective of legality spelling matters however from the perspective of spirit and mission which catherine matters if one purpose in naming a school after someone is to present that person as a positive influence in the shaping of values and choices then it is important that we know who the person is and what values shaped the decisions of her life clearly the catherine with whom our sca students are most familiar is catherine mcauley founder of the sisters of mercy although we know she is not the catharine after whom the school was named it is however the dedicated life of service of catherine mcauley that inspires today s catharinites she may not be recognized yet as a saint of the catholic church but our students hold her in high esteem and it is in her footsteps that they are encouraged to follow a question to ponder can you add to this story who do you think is the catharine after whom st catharine academy was named we would welcome your memories and insights t 3
