the purpose of the first baptist church of carrollton is to be a dynamic spiritual church empowered by the holy spirit to share christ with as many people as possible to be a worshiping fellowship experiencing an increasing awareness of god and a growing response to his leadership to nurture christians toward spiritual maturity to be a church whose members are christ-like in their daily living the 1baptist@bellsouth.net www.carrolltonfirstbaptist.com 770 832-6359 · 770 832-6467 fax worship broadcast radio station 102.7 fm messenger volume 62 number 05 january 30 2012 established 1847 first baptist church 102 dixie street carrollton georgia 30117 the house of pain it s not the surgery that gets you when you have a knee replaced it is the therapy i ain t lying it s pretty tough my therapist lew an otherwise nice guy turns into lucifer jennifer lew s partner in pain turns into jezebel the therapy room becomes the house of pain i haven t cried yet but i have thought about it and i haven t cussed yet but if someone would write the words down i would sign it whoever first coined the phrase no pain no gain must have had a knee replacement i do appreciate both my therapists who are helping me get better each time i visit they are really nice people who remind me of my dad who before whippings said this hurts me more than it hurts you yes dad sure it just hurts me in a different place i ve noticed this about physical therapists they also from time to time play the role of psychotherapist i have heard folk tell the therapists about a family problem or personal struggle maybe it is because the therapist is yanking on your knee in such a way that you are thinking terrible thoughts and you blurt out did you know i have a drinking problem or as they stretch your leg into ungodly positions you scream my husband is a lunatic without giving much thought to the consequences of such a declaration as the pain in the knee is ramped up patients seem to open up about personal pain all of that reminds me of my favorite joke a horse walks into a bar and the bartender asks hey hey hey why the long face i don t frequent bars but i understand that folk after a few drinks will open up to the bartender about life s struggles bartenders and therapists ok and preachers too have a lot in common people just unload on us about all their stuff and i don t have to twist their knee or pull on their leg to hear it however my sermons have been known to be painful hopefully we preachers are as good a listener as the bartender is reputed to be and as good as the physical therapist has to be a christian professor wrote a book called how will they hear if we don t listen he says that instead of preaching to folk maybe we ought to start by listening to them our christian monologues though well intended are not very effective let s try some dialogue and a good place to start is where they hurt if you take time to listen they will tell you and you don t have to yank on their knee to get it when we listen to others talk about their pain their questions and their doubts then it makes us more vulnerable and approachable therefore my beloved brethren let every man be swift to hear and slow to speak james 1 19 please join us as our youth lead worship at both services and associate pastor of students brandon tubbs preaches sincere thanks to everyone who supported the passport camp fundraiser luncheon last sunday and special thanks to the parents and youth who cooked and worked so hard to make the event a success due to your ongoing and much needed much appreciated generosity the youth are one step closer to being able to attend passport this summer youth sunday february 5
