january 2012 from the road atlantic provinces trucking association newsletter apta updates update for carriers here are some of the initiatives the apta is currently working on marine atlantic rate increases as you are all very aware we received notice on jan 12th that marine atlantic were raising th their rates effective february 13 more specifically a 4 increase on the general rate a $50/load increase for drop trailer this represents a 24 increase and a new charge of $3.50 per shipment as a security charge to date i have had numerous conversations with mai and also the marine committee has had the chance to speak with marine atlantic during a conference call to ask questions regarding these increases as a result we are not satisfied with the answers we received so we are pushing to have a sit down meeting with them we have also escalated the issue to the federal government as these increases are unjustified and it would seem they were imposed on marine atlantic we have published two press releases and issued a letter to minister denis lebel last week a message was sent to the head of marine policy development for minister lebel regarding our concerns this is a very hot issue and we are looking for everyone`s support on this matter we will keep you informed see our website for the press releases www.apta.ca meeting with public safety th jean-marc and some of the executives had a meeting on january 17 with john lunney of public safety these meetings occur a few times a year unfortunately mike johnston director of public safety had to cancel at the last minute nevertheless we had a very productive meeting and some of the topics discussed were carrier profile hos record requirement on p/d drivers who don`t leave the 100 miles radius weight tolerance and what will be their final decision super single tires and weight anything new being done on harmonization between the atlantic provinces and other small items this was a very receptive meeting from public safety and they will be looking into these matters and get back to us please let us know if you have any other concerns and we will bring them forward at our next meeting with public safety tolls in nb last week there was an article published in different nb papers which highlighted a feasibility study that the nb province has been involved in regarding the possibility of tolls for our province minister higgs came out with some numbers and they didn`t look good for the trucking industry or the general public for that matter the province is considering a fixed rate for cars or another option is a three cent per kilometer fee at that rate a round trip between saint john and the u.s border would cost about $6.50 or $22 between saint john and edmundston at three cents per kilometre the toll would raise about $50-million for the new brunswick government a large sum but it still represents less than 10 per cent of the $545-million deficit plaguing the government continue next page if you bought it a truck brought it table of content apta updates 1 atlantic news 4 national news 6 events 8 from the road advertising advertisement details for more information call the office at 506-855-2782 or e-mail apta@apta.ca
