dear students and parents this booklet contains the descriptions of courses which will be offered at johnson creek high school this course description handbook is designed to assist students in careful planning of high school course selections through the school counseling program each student develops a future career plan based on career clusters this plan will help to assure that students take all the courses that are needed to fulfill career goals the majority of careers fall into 16 career clusters agriculture food natural resources architecture construction arts a/v technology communications business management administration education training finance government public administration health science hospitality tourism human services information technology law public safety corrections security manufacturing marketing sales service science technology engineering mathematics transportation distribution logistics career clusters identify pathways from high schools to two and four-year technical colleges universities graduate schools apprenticeship programs and the workplace so that learners can recognize the relationship between what they learn in school and what they can do in the future students in 8th and 10th grade participate in education/career planning conferences these conferences are designed to evaluate the student s progress toward his/her career goal during the conference the student s schedule is reviewed to ensure forward progress is being made by the student toward graduation and post-secondary plans in today s economy most careers/jobs require some post-secondary education post-secondary education can range from an apprenticeship to a technical college program to a four year college or university no matter what career is desired learning about career clusters and the career pathways is essential for the student to make an informed decision no high school has the resources to offer all the courses that all individuals may desire we however have strived to offer a balanced list of courses which should meet the needs of the vast majority of our students 3

graduation requirements to be eligible for a high school diploma a student will have earned a minimum of twenty-seven credits a credit shall be earned for successful completion of a course credit for courses meeting more or less frequently or for other equivalent learning experiences shall be granted by the school district in proportion to the instructional time or requirements involved college bound students must earn a minimum of seventeen units from the following subject areas english math science social studies and foreign language check with the guidance office to be certain you are meeting the entrance requirements of the college you choose a diploma shall be awarded upon the recommendation of the high school principal and approval by the board of education after certification that the student has completed successfully a course of study designated to meet the student s educational needs and capabilities a total credits a total of 27 required and elective credits must be earned in grades 9 through 12 15 required and 12 elective required courses to be eligible for a diploma students shall earn credits in the following required courses 1 language arts 4 credits english 9 1 credit english 10 1 credit electives 2 credits 2 mathematics 3 credits 3 social science 3 ½ credits world cultures 1 credit u.s 1 credit modern history ½ credit government ½ credit consumer economics ½ credit 4 science 2 ½ credits physical science 1 credit biology 1 credit elective ½ credit 5 physical education 1 ½ credits 6 health ½ credit b the above course requirements are considered to be minimum required courses for graduation from johnson creek high school the student is encouraged to pursue additional study as appropriate to his/her needs 5

c electives in grades 9 through 12 students shall also earn 11 ½ additional credits in courses elected to suit individual needs interests and capabilities and to develop job entry or post-secondary skills course selections shall be approved by parents guardians and counselor junior high students who are able to take high school course work will earn high school credit d registration changes drops course changes after the regular registration process should be kept to a minimum in those rare cases where students require a change of registration that change should occur within the first three days of a new term course drops made after the third day of the new term may result in an f for that course the principal must approve all drops e grade point average when computing grade point average gpa a grade of a a 4 pts a 3.67 pts b 3.3 pts b 3 pts b 2.67 pts c 2.3 pts c 2.0 pts c 1.67 pts d 1.3 pts d 1.0 pts d 0.67 pts f 0 pts the uses of pluses and minuses will be computed into the gpa f honor roll honor roll is 3.0 3.49 and high honor roll is 3.50 4.0 to be eligible for high honor roll/honor roll a student must be enrolled for a minimum of two credits at johnson creek high school per semester these credits can be a combination of classes from johnson creek high school and other approved post secondary schools exceptions must be approved by the high school principal and district administrator who must be notified prior to the end of each grading period g athletic eligibility academic requirements 1 a student must maintain passing grades in all classes fourth quarter grades are carried over to the next school year a students who attend summer school to remediate a failing grade must have prior approval from the high school principal courses may be remediated for athletic eligibility purposes and must be in certified and approved educational programs 2 eligibility shall be based upon all subjects for which credit is given incomplete grades are recorded as f s if not completed within two 2 weeks unless serious personal problems prevail this is to be determined by the principal 3 any student receiving failing f grades will be ineligible for a period equal to at least one fourth 1/4 of the regularly scheduled season such ineligibility shall also be for at least the minimum total contests required by the wiaa in a given sport an athlete must be designated at a participation level varsity jv freshman to serve all penalties a at the completion of the suspension period an athlete may become eligible if a passing grade exists in all classes and is maintained b prior to completion of the suspension period an ineligible athlete must turn in to the athletic director an eligibility card which will include the names of all classes currently enrolled in along with current grades and signatures of the teacher before he/she can become eligible to participate the eligibility card must continue to be turned in to the athletic director at two-week intervals until the end of the grading period c the ineligible may practice only if he/she attends a designated after-school study hall prior to each school day practice 6

participation in graduation exercises the board of education believes that completion of requirements for a high school diploma is an achievement that merits honor and recognition this comes in part through participation in commencement graduation exercises when the district according to the tradition of pomp and circumstance especially recognizes graduating seniors participation in these exercises therefore is not to be taken lightly and while graduation is a joyous occasion it is also a time of solemnity only those students who have completed the requirements of the state of wisconsin and the johnson creek school district should be allowed to participate in graduation exercises however it is recognized that there may be extenuating circumstances whereby completion of the course and credit requirements may be in doubt to provide for planning by the student and his/her parents the following shall be the policy on participation in graduation exercises 1 any student not meeting graduation requirements at the end of the first semester of the senior year with little or no opportunity to complete those requirements by the end of the second semester of the senior year will be notified in writing that he/she may not participate in graduation exercises unless the requirements have been met a copy of this notice will be sent to the student parents or guardian by registered or certified mail any student who had not met graduation requirements by the end of his/her senior year and who has not been notified of deficiencies as specified in the preceding paragraph will be allowed to participate in the graduation exercises but will not receive a diploma unless and until all requirements have been met information concerning the application of this policy to any student shall be held in the strictest of confidence to be shared only among the student his/her parents or guardian and affected staff members 2 3 8

early graduation the total high school experience is an important aspect of the maturation and socialization process of any student as a consequence this privilege will be granted sparingly and then only for one reason to facilitate the early enrollment of a student in a college vocational or professional school or university or early placement of a student in a specific military training program or job the following points outline the high school early-graduation policy 1 2 the student must have completed all graduation requirements the student must submit a dated letter from his/her parents if under 18 or from the student if over 18 requesting that he/she be permitted to graduate early and stating the plans necessitating early graduation this letter must be filed with the building principal before the end of the first week of their senior year students petitioning to graduate early must obtain board approval students graduating early may participate in graduation exercises taking place at the end of the current school year 3 4 test dates 2012-2013 9

the youth options program the youth options program allows all public high school juniors and seniors who meet certain requirements to take postsecondary courses at a wisconsin technical college or institution of higher education an institution of higher education ihe includes uw system institutions tribally controlled colleges and private nonprofit institutions the program opens the door to greater learning opportunities for students who are considering a technical career students wishing to begin college early or students who want to prepare to enter the workforce immediately after high school graduation the student does not have to pay for a postsecondary course if the school board determines the course may receive high school credit and the course is not comparable to a course offered in the school district under some circumstances a school board does have to pay for a comparable technical college course see payment of tuition and fees for more details if approved by the school board the student will receive both high school and postsecondary credit for a successfully completed course the high school will grant a diploma to a student who has successfully completed high school graduation standards regardless of whether the requirements were met at the high school or a postsecondary institution course credit and grade will become part of the student s cumulative grade record at johnson creek high school forms you need a program plan and report form pi-8700a used to notify the school board of a student s intent to participate in the program may be obtained form your school district the dpi or the web address provided on the opposite side of this brochure application forms for admission to a postsecondary institution may be obtained from your school district or the postsecondary institution eligibility student/parent responsibilities since all public high schools participate in the youth options program all juniors and seniors in wisconsin public schools who meet the program requirements are eligible to qualify for the program a student must have completed the 10th grade and to attend a technical college be in good academic standing and have an acceptable disciplinary record apply to the postsecondary institution in the school semester prior to the one in which the student plans to attend the postsecondary course notify the school board complete form pi-8700a of the student s intention of enrolling in a postsecondary institution no later than march 1st for a course to be taken in the fall semester october 1st for a course to be taken in the spring semester notify the school board if the student is registered to attend a postsecondary course a parent or guardian is responsible for satisfactory student attendance and the student s compliance with the compulsory school attendance law under s 118.151 a stats moreover the school board may refuse to permit a student with certain conditions to attend a technical college if the cost would impose an undue financial burden on the school district 11

payment of tuition and fees the school board must pay an ihe for any course that is taken for high school credit and that is not comparable to a course offered in the school district the school board must pay for a technical college for any course that is taken for high school credit if the student takes 10 or more credits per semester at the technical college the school district would be responsible for payment for comparable courses for one-half the total number of credits taken but no more than six a student must pay for any postsecondary course taken at a technical college that is comparable to a course offered at the school district if the student is taking less than 10 postsecondary credits during any semester a student must pay for any postsecondary course taken at an ihe that is comparable to a course offered at the school district a student must pay for a postsecondary course that is not used for high school credit a student must pay for incidental college fees such as for a parking permit and for equipment tools and supplies that will become the property of the student unless the school board agrees to loan such equipment to the pupil determining high school credit/comparability the school board shall determine whether a postsecondary course is eligible for high school credit how much high school credit may be awarded and whether the course is comparable to a course offered at the school district appeals a student may appeal a school board s decision regarding awarding of high school credit/comparability of a postsecondary course to the state superintendent within 30 days transportation parents or students are responsible for transportation between the school and the postsecondary institution transportation assistance is available from the dpi for low-income parents eligible for free/reduced lunch under the federal school lunch program transportation costs may only be reimbursed if the student is taking a postsecondary course for high school credit a claim for transportation reimbursement form pi-8701 is available from your school the dpi or the web address provided on the opposite side of the brochure and must be submitted to the dpi no later than 30 days after the end of the school semester to which the claim pertains a student is required to the extent possible to use public transportation or a vehicle owned by his or her family 12

agriscience and natural resources additional fees some classes will require outside projects for which parents will provide the necessary supplies classroom teachers will communicate this to you in addition high school classes in technology and art will require additional fees when class projects are differentiated each student will be charged for materials used these fees will be projected prior to a student building/creating the project anisci animal science i ½ credit semester grades 9 12 this class will provide students with biological science in the large animal species all farm production animal species will be discussed from cattle pigs and horses to turkeys rabbits cats dogs and even bees will be discussed the reproductive systems as well as digestive systems genetics and the physiology of udder function will be highlighted this class counts toward the ½ credit science elective requirement for graduation anisciii animal science ii ½ credit semester grades 9 12 this class will provide students with an understanding of medical terminology and positional terms students will have hands on opportunities with handling animals learning safety and hazardous information students will explore zoonotic diseases and infectious disease as well as parasites the circulatory and urinary systems will be highlighted this class counts toward the ½ credit science elective requirement for graduation fish fish and wildlife conservation ½ credit semester grades 9 12 explore the great outdoors students will study administration of fish and wildlife management hunting and fishing regulations are studied as well as habitat of those animals national and state wildlife refuges are studied as well as animal migratory habits students look at endangered species and contributing factors as well as learn the basics of wild fish population as the baby boomers get older the jobs in the dnr will open for these students career areas will be discussed find out what it takes to get a job in the great outdoors or just appreciate them a little more vetsci veterinary science ½ credit semester grades 10 12 this class will introduce the students to basic veterinary practices used in today s animal industries terminology and disease presentation and prevention will be discussed students will have the chance to take temperatures do fecal cultures for parasites and examine sperm cell motility which are just a couple of the many labs students will part take in during class students will also practice giving shots to oranges and grapefruits the students will also study the birth lactation and growth of the litters of baby pigs born in the large animal lab prerequisite animal science 15
