the purpose of the first baptist church of carrollton is to be a dynamic spiritual church empowered by the holy spirit to share christ with as many people as possible to be a worshiping fellowship experiencing an increasing awareness of god and a growing response to his leadership to nurture christians toward spiritual maturity to be a church whose members are christ-like in their daily living the 1baptist@bellsouth.net www.carrolltonfirstbaptist.com 770 832-6359 · 770 832-6467 fax worship broadcast radio station 102.7 fm messenger volume 62 number 01 january 2 2012 established 1847 first baptist church 102 dixie street carrollton georgia 30117 being congenial in the new year quick who can tell me the name of the current miss america those of you with nebraska roots might know that one from your state teresa scanlan is the 2011 winner and on january 14 she will surrender her crown to the next miss america by the way you can vote online and if you do please cast your ballot for miss alabama certainly the most beautiful talented and intelligent one and from my home state did you know that the miss america contest was not carried on a major network for many years because of sagging ratings it got dropped years ago by abc and was somewhere on cable the tlc network i think well i am glad to see that abc has now picked it back up and all of you can gather in front of the tele and watch this years pageant when i was a kid the miss america pageant was one of the biggest tv events of the year hosted by burt parks there she is miss america he would sing almost 40 of american households would gather in front of their black and white tv to watch it was a huge pop culture event there was the elegance of the evening gown competition the talent displays miss mississippi twirling a baton while singing battle hymn the swimsuit competition almost barbie like and of course the formal interview in which each finalist said that she just wanted to help the less fortunate well today s pageants feature some really impressive young ladies as did those in my day and it is now billed as a scholarship pageant with big money going to the winner for her college of choice even though ratings are not what they used to be for the show congeniality is making a comeback in 2006 the miss congeniality award was handed out for the first time in many years miss congeniality has the inner beauty that such pageants are supposed to be about by the way miss congeniality for 2011 is katie lynn laroche who has done much to further the awareness of the problem of human trafficking she really is helping the less fortunate congeniality refers to one s pleasant disposition i had a friend years ago who was in the miss alabama beauty contest she won miss congeniality if a girl wins that award then she has natural winsome qualities that make her a likeable person to the other contestants i don t think the apostle paul would have ever been considered congenial confrontational maybe however in colossians 3 12 paul is talking about the kind of traits that we should have that will make us winsome and that will build up the church they are the kind of traits that should make any one s list of new year s resolutions paul uses a clothing analogy just as beauty contestants will change clothes several times during a contest sounds like our daughter getting ready for school each morning paul says we are to put on compassion kindness humility meekness and patience i like to be around people who have those congenial traits and by the way helping the less fortunate is a good thing for all of us to do pageant winners or not stop hunger now saturday january 7 10:00 a.m noon · burns hall your help is needed to package meals please call or email the office asap to volunteer for this group of 40 children must stay with parents practicing what we preach missions month at fbc january dr davis sermon theme doing missions in our world really global missions day parade of flags sunday january 8 guest speaker amy w derrick field personnel selection manager for the cooperative baptist fellowship of georgia stop hunger now s meal packaging program provides volunteers the opportunity to package dehydrated high protein and highly nutritious meals that are used in crisis situations and in feeding programs for schools and orphanages in developing countries around the world join us as we welcome amy who in addition to her personnel work also serves with student.go a college program to prepare students to go on mission trips while in school attention flag bearers must be high school age up please report to the sanctuary at 10:30 a.m look inside for more mission opportunities!
