i don t know whether it s my age or the fact that i happen to be born in january but for some reason the new year seems to bother me it s like a clock ticking in a room of silence 2011 was both a wonderful and a sweet year for me with all the exciting things going on i was much happier than i have ever been before but now that the year is coming to the end of its natural life it makes me sad it feels like an old friend is departing from a ship that will never return like a part of your very soul is being left behind as you move on or like moving out of your childhood home where so many sweet and lovely memories are locked up in but it doesn t matter because it s time to face it and brace it it s time to say a fond farewell to the warm and cuddly embrace of 2011 thank you for all the happy memories and the good times 2011 i will cherish them forever to me the fireworks which we light on new year s eve are like the cremation ceremony of the old year while also celebrating the coming of what it s all about 2012 with all the prospects and predictions of 2012 it s now time to open our arms and our hearts and make the very most of 2012 because it will be our one and only opportunity to do so editors word it s another dark evening in december and as usual i m sitting on the computer feeling a little gloomy it s now time to say goodbye to this year and get excited about the next one it s time for new resolutions to be made lessons to be learned from our mistakes in the previous year and a vow to make this year the best year yet.

lisbon by samuel james white

to visit lisbon or lisboa as it s known in portuguese is to visit a truly unique site in europe as it s one of the only major cities which perches itself on the edge of the atlantic ocean portugal itself has always been known as a very poor and backwards country when compared with other western european countries but it still has the ability to enchant anybody who has had the privilege to explore the city itself but if you are tired of swanning around with a cup of coffee in your right hand and a tour guide in your left hand then toss them away and make your way to the bairro alto for some stunning views of the city and lisbon s main district for clubbing and all out wild partying if you thought you were back in the 18th century while walking through lisbon s white-washed and limestone-clad streets then these nightclubs will certainly toss you back into the 21st century while many view portugal and its cities as out of the way from the hustle and bustle of london paris and madrid this couldn t be more untrue as lisbon s rossio square is the portuguese equivalent of london s trafalgar square and tokyo s shibuya if you thought that the portuguese didn t know how to have a good time then you are dead wrong because shops and cafes like the cafe nicola dates back all the way to the 18th century if you are looking for an excuse to drink then make this a mustvisit location while you are in lisbon.

holidays are not holidays unless you can return home looking bronzed or browned by the glare of the sun though and going to lisbon will not disappoint you as just outside of lisbon you can find some of the best beaches in europe just outside lisbon along the railway line linking lisbon to cascais you will find a beach to suit anybody if you are looking for a quiet cove to hide away from the world then you will find it whereas if you are looking for a place to surf or just swim in the warming blue of the atlantic then there s one of those too even in the winter you will find people swaying too and fro like tree branches being gently caressed by a light breeze but in the summer why not go in for a spot of beach rugby or beach volleyball the locals are friendly and are always willing to accept new players the iberian peninsula is a welcome relief from the general january hell which we are forced to contend with every year at home but portugal is a laid back country and lisbon is a laid back city steeped in history with a sprinkling of a modern lifestyle to top the most popular beach is it all off lisbon is trucarcavelos beach as you will ly an experience you will forget in a hurry find a good portion of lis not bon living it up down here.

limoges france by christy clayton

limoges france is not designed to be a typical touristy location but rather a quaint beautifully architectured city and an ideal retreat if you re looking for an escape from a hectic life of deadlines chores and bills with paris situated not too far away limoges located in the limousin region of france is perfect for a weekend stop on your travels i visited limoges several times growing up and none of them with my parents and so i really felt as if i grew up a lot each time i stayed there many of my first experience were in limoges my first taste of a job as a runner at a local radio station on the top floor of an apartment building my first time away from my family and even my first taste of alcohol at the local gay bar which seems to be the only decent night club in town limoges is after all more of a place to enjoy in the day where you can get lost in the winding cobbled streets and get a real idea of what french life is like away from the tourists and manic roundabouts the cathédrale st-Étienne is a landmark for the region and is beautifully designed along with the rest of the city there are also two botanical gardens leading down towards the river vienne which are home to the cité des métiers et des arts a centre for the exhibition of handicrafts they re worth a look at even if they would not typically be your kind of thing.

this city reeks of culture with pretty little shops and boutiques that sell everything from tiny knick-knacks to gorgeous chocolate that is so nice to look at that you will think twice about eating it in contrast to the boutiques there are grand locations like the hotel de ville located right in the middle of the city which is surrounded by important-looking buildings and attractive gardens to be home to the tomb of martial saint and a place that attracted many pilgrims centuries ago nowadays there are more restaurants than pilgrims limoges is most famous for its porcelain which of course means there is a porcelain factory to visit to see just how it s made and maybe have a go at making some yourself if you re not ready to go to bed at 7pm then there is always the speakeasy gay bar that is decorated completely pink on the inside and is probably the best place to be alternatively there s a nice little irish tavern because really what is a holiday without an irish pub for the beer-lovers out there there is also the pavillion du verdurier situated behind the high school gay-lussac ahem which was originally a conserver of frozen meats from argentina but is now home to many temporary exhibitions and galleries but the real art is the building itself which is so if you fancy feeling cylinderical with multi like one of those intelcoloured mosaic facades lectual cultured types limoges is a nice place to instead of wandering spend a weekend or two a around gallery after gal chance to experience the lery in limoges you can real france and immerse always have a stroll along yourself in the language the river vienne to the art and history of a beaupont saint etienne which tiful city awaits you is a bridge that is said
