city hall activities going on this past jan 17 could stop a group of 50 or so residents from attending a forum at d a morrison middle school on national transit strategies the event was hosted by beacheseast york member of parliament matthew kellway who organized a panel of speakers including new democrat olivia chow canadian urban transit association s cuta president and ceo michael roschlau and beacheseast york member of provincial parliament michael prue the city of toronto was looked at under a magnifying glass as an example of a problematic system with kellway pointing out that it scored last in 21 metropolitans worldwide with an average commute time of 80 minutes according to a vitalsigns report by toronto community foundation that equates to spending 1.5 years of one s life getting to and from work according to the same report in spite of building all that roadway [in the past few years it still takes 20 minutes longer on average in toronto to get somewhere by public transit said kellway the evening event continued with a presentation by roschlau depicting cuta s transit vision 2040 a framework for transit improvements across canada over the next 30 years a time frame equivalent to a generation according to roschlau recognizing the changes the country is undergoing both nationwide and at community level cuta has identified key challenges with current systems and developed a set of key points to focus on as its vision is implemented including putting transit at the centre of the community revolutionizing service and greening transit to reduce the industry s ecological footprint key findings by cuta during their research process were the inevitable growth of cities and an increase in senior population traffic congestion will not go away admitted roschlau who is a resident in the beach while pointing out that changes in lifestyle will see people travelling less resulting in a more compact urban lifestyle chow the ndp s transit critic has entered a private member s bill into the house of commons which she calls the national public transit strategy act in it she calls for fast affordable and accessible transit to the public it can happen said chow it s about [different levels of government working together right now the federal government is mostly missing the bill aims to reduce commute times and alleviate congestion in canadian cities and communities and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality among other things chow expressed her concern that the three levels of government don t really know how the funding of transit nationwide is managed there s no funding formula it s not clear she said adding that the feds simply expect the municipalities to decide how to spend the money which results in long term projects never getting completed due to changes in the mayoral seats she exemplified the issue by mentioning the work that was done on the eglinton subway line back in 1994 before it was scrapped by mike harris a year later in an effort to rally support chow will be travelling across the country to educate people on the needs of a national transit plan she hopes to encourage communities to demand more from their local members of parliament we hope to have a transit system we can be proud of she concluded prue then took to the stage to emphasize the importance of investing in cities and urban areas cities are the place where development is going to take place he said he stated that currently in canada 85 of the population live in towns and cities yet the provincial governments still focus too much time on rural issues prue is working on changing that so there is more focus on municipalities as a way to familiarize themselves with commute times in toronto prue along with a few other mpp s took up the challenge of using public transit exclusively for one week he was astonished by how long it takes to get around during the question period of the forum attendees expressed their frustrations with accessibily for seniors safety issues and sky-rocketing fares cont d on page 24 4500 chesswood dr north york on 6 dawes rd toronto on 416-739-0000 416-690-8585 pruned and two would have to be axed at a march 21 public meeting at adam beck community centre regina gudelis the first woman arborist in the city s forestry department explained that willows have hollow trunks and are not sturdy enough to withstand strong winds gusting off the lake their lifespan is 75 to 90 years and many of the trees were planted in the early 1900s trees that have to be taken down before they are blown down would be replaced with willows grown from cuttings in the city s own nursery there was a poll among residents to decide on the style of new streetlamps for the boardwalk eleven designs were submitted by manufacturers who hoped their product would outshine the rest the original city choice of typical sodium lighting was vetoed by councillor tom jakobek who felt they were too harsh and cold for the boardwalk the new lights would be installed in 1991 and would cost between $500 and $1,000 each in april police were called when a gang of 25 youths invaded ·06 jan 24 2012 1/23/12 11:43 am page 1 6 beach metro news tuesday january 24 2011 in my opinion province needs to allow more public input t here are skeptics who hold the view that they are powerless to influence political change this is not generally true public input is sought at all levels of the political process though the establishment of committees whose job entails listening to people and making modifications to policies and programs the city of toronto has such an input mechanism as does the parliament of canada today the lone exception is the province of ontario following the ontario provincial election last october we found michael prue mpp beaches/east york ourselves in the position of having a minority government this was not new to ontario but from the reaction of premier mcguinty you would think that this was completely new to canadian political life there is a minority parliament yet the governing party has insisted on giving themselves a committee structure which obvi ates the electoral outcome their proposal would be to appoint opposition members to nonvoting chairperson positions to secure majority status the two parties in opposition point out generations of canadian and commonwealth experience which actually reflect the seats that are held i.e less than 50 of the voting members committees are the heart of the legislative process members from all parties are responsible for making every piece of legislation right for the people who elect us the process allows for debate ne gotiation and public consultation mid-january to mid-february is the period when the standing committee on finance and economic affairs travels across the province to elicit opinion and advice from the people of ontario the opinions of more than 200 deputants and nearly as many written correspondents forms the bulk off information used in our annual budget which is tabled in late march because there are no committees struck the essential voice of the people is not being heard government intransigence is lead ing to skeptisism we all need to tell our government that it has an obligation to listen the fact that it is in a minority position is even more reason for it to consider diverse opinions the people of beaches-east york and the people of this province deserve nothing less as your elected representative and as the ndp critic for finance we need to get down to work we have an economy to set right most importantly for the 13 million people to whom we must listen happy new year to all beach metro community news published by ward 9 community news inc the editor dog owners need to clean up and choose walkers carefully to residents and dog owners near adam beck school i m writing this letter on behalf of three of my children four times a day five days a week we walk from home to school and back along woodale avenue from bingham to scarborough road the kids have dubbed this route poo alley we do this walk with a neighbour and between us have six kids in tow without fail at least one of us steps in dog excrement one or two times a week it has gotten on shoes pants and hands resulting in tears being late for school and tons of clean up it s on the lawns and the sidewalks and along the perimeter of adam beck school it s there in the winter in the spring summer and fall it has become a predictable factor in our daily lives and it doesn t need to be this is not something new as it has been going on for at least a year and we ve reached a new level of frustration i m not sure who the irresponsible dog owner/walker is but this is not an occasional accident my children wish to pass on a message to whoever is responsible please pick up after your dog don t let your dog poo everywhere says wyatt six years old i stepped in poo on the way to school it was really gross and made me sad says connor six years old poo on the street wrecked my batman shoes it smells bad and it s always there says roarke four years old to all concerned residents keep your eyes open and don t be afraid to speak up and pass on the message that this is not acceptable tanya barrett bingham avenue i have no doubt that anyone who lives in this community or even visits the beach would agree that we are a community with an abundance of dogs and dog walkers we have many responsible knowledgable caring dog walkers who are licensed bonded insured and who abide by the defined bylaws of dog group limits and leash requirements they provide an essential service for many pet owners doing a job that is not an easy one perhaps we don t acknowledge that enough so thanks to them for what you all do and how hard you work and then there are those that shouldn t have anything to do with any animal today i witnessed another episode of a dog walker abusing one of his dogs witnessed by more than myself a chocolate lab had his ears pulled and yanked multiple times on one occasion yelping and was kicked more than once as well none of us saw the dog misbehaving just being a social enthusiastic typical lab today was not the first day i witnessed this particular dog walker mistreating his dogs the lab was never off leash the others never on leash even when walking on the boardwalk his reasoning for pulling the lab s ears was that there is an issue with this dog so that makes it okay to abuse this dog somone else s dog having seen enough i approached him and asked if he was a dog walker his answer was well not really but i do this i walk other people s dogs i asked what kind of training method involves pulling ears kicking and rough handling and said that i suspect the owners had no idea that their dogs were being mistreated it was like some internal switch was activated where in a rage i was told that i better get the f off the beach followed by expletives and threats to my personal safety all of this was said with his fist and face inches from my face this is someone that you are trusting with your dog and keys to your home in the past i have seen dogs slapped punched in the head kicked choked dragged thrown hung in the air by their leash and collar had their faces held down in the sand forced to run full out in a large pack while being pulled behind a bicycle and left in vehicles on hot days in full sun or bitter cold days while other dogs are walked i ve seen 16 dogs jammed in one van 13 dogs stuffed into a toyota corolla this and more by dog walkers yes i confront them yes i report what i see it won t stop until dog owners really check out who is looking after their dog it is the dogs who are suffering and dog owners are none the wiser if you have a dog walker do you really know how your dog is being treated if you re thinking of hiring one don t just take someone else s word check them out perhaps when they don t know you re watching for the reputation of all the great walkers in our community but most importantly for the well being of your own dog all of these dogs that have been abused belong to someone perhaps one is yours finally to those so called dog walkers who are mistreating and abusing our dogs you know who you are and we re watching janice rowley scarborough letters cont d on page village the taylor family were thrilled to celebrate the100th birthday of the matriarch of the family aldeane taylor nee moore was surrounded by family and friends to mark this incredible milestone aldeane grew up in the beach she and her three siblings went to kimberley public school her uncles owned the moore brothers lumber company which was on gerrard street east for many years she married a local boy frank taylor 19091994 whose father built many beach homes together they had seven children six girls and one boy aldeane has had quite a following of neighbours friends and her children s friends with whom she has shared many recipes household hints and sage advice on life needless to say life was very busy in the taylor home her typical day started very early when she made a huge pot of porridge got frank off to work bundled the children off to school and then started the endless loads of laundry originally with a wringer washer she would then start preparation for those who were coming home for lunch she would spend the afternoon baking and preparing supper she basically cooked for a small dinner party of nine every night of the week her baking and cooking were superb often in the evening she would spend hours ironing clothes and even the bed sheets her door was always open to anyone who dropped by for a visit she would always have fresh baked goodies coffee aldeane taylor at her 100th birthday party held at chester village in november and information on the `comings and goings of her family members her dining room buffet proudly displayed cards and pictures aldeane being the nucleus of the family was always sent postcards from her vacationing family often she would have clippings from the local newspaper of pertinent articles which also helped guide the conversation she lived on her own preparing her meals entertaining friends and family until she was 92 years old she moved in with one of her daughters for two years and was able to look after herself and participate in cocktail parties and enjoy the occasional glass of wine unfortunately aldeane fell and broke her hip which forced her to be hospitalized and bed-ridden for many weeks this accident was the cause for her move to chester village we are so blessed to have this amazing woman in our life aldeane received accolades from the queen the prime minister and the mayor on her 100th birthday she continues to live at chester village anticipating frequent visits from her friends her children her 20 grandchildren 32 greatgrandchildren and one great-great grandchild janice jones is aldeane contribute visit or email www.etba.net breech@sympatico.ca sturdy gert says goodbye turdy gert mccurdy had just returned from a visit to her old stomping grounds of red eye and i don t believe she had even set her bags down when she was asked to correct a problem with some of the clientele at the stunted pines saloon and manicure shop down on white plains boulevard she walked in sized up the situation and felled the principal troublemaker with a thunderous forearm smash to the midriff and that was the end to that believe you me on her way out she paused only long enough to introduce her latest romantic conquest a weak-chinned chap named palmer who always followed ten steps behind sturdy and invariably began trembling when she came any closer palmer seems like a nice enough chap but i really don t see a lengthy future for the relationship because i suspect that palmer cannot withstand an uupercut to the chin and that happens to be sturdy s favorite way of showing affection s it is a well known fact within our little group that she really likes you if you have been knocked cold by one of her wallops but she gets cross if you are unconscious for longer than 15 minutes it is not because of the time and effort involved in getting the loser back on his feet she explained to me it s the expense sturdy pointed out that the cost of smelling salts keeps increasing and she really can t afford to keep running around reviving her victims before they become entombed in the snow banks that dot the landscape when winter arrives by the way i happened to glance out the shop window just in time to see palmer being carted off to the train station and i fear that he did not measure up to sturdy s code of conduct he seemed like a nice enough sort of chap and i am sure he will get right back in the middle of the social scene just as soon as his facial wounds heal now that those matters have been cleared up the time has come for me to tell you that sturdy and i and all the other social miscreants that you have encountered in this column are calling it quits speaking for myself it has been a joyous run and one that has been made so thanks to the editorial freedom i have been accorded by sheila blinoff the big boss at beach metro and carole stimmell the editorial chief with whom i worked so closely through the years i learned a great deal from both of them and i hope their patient tutelage has been reflected in the offerings that i have produced over the years and before i leave i wish to thank all the other members of the beach metro staff who always treated me with unfailing politeness whenever i came to them with my inane problems thanks to all of you and my best wishes to carole s successor the well-travelled jon muldoon all the best jon and welcome back to the dedicated volunteers who carry car loads of newspaper bundles around to the volunters who distribute the paper door to door bob heighway a retired ibm man who aside from volunteering for us also works as a school crossing guard for the toronto board of education i caught up with him just after his lunch shift 1 your favourite place in the beach the neville park ravine bob lives on neville ·13 jan 24 2012 food 1/20/12 11:40 am page 1 tuesday january 24 2012 beach metro news 13 garden views y gardening gene is itching and making me long for the smell of earth and colours other than grey and while i m sure seed companies know this because it s just about now that the catalogues start pouring in bright pictures and tantalizing descriptions of wonderful new variety glorious mass of tropical-looking flowers excellent heavyyielding and disease resistant that last one s a carrot not a chicken in these pre-spring days anything seems possible of course i can grow a canna from seed a peony too and why not try astilbe seeds are a fraction of the cost of a plant after all well i m old enough to recognize the warning signs i m getting an attack of seedmania and had better put the catalogues aside and lie down in a dark room for a while and while i m there i can meditate on my gardening sins buying way more packs of seeds than i can cope with ordering seeds of plants that take forever to come up and even longer to bloom starting seeds and forgetting to water them and so on m dealing with seedmania in the dead of winter baby steps the fact is seeds mary fran are a bargain one mcquade pack is probably is a hobby gardener enough for two city and freelance writer gardeners and you can get interesting varieties that you won t find growing at the local garden store the downside is that like babies they need the right care and environment but again like babies it s a wonderful experience to grow something yourself from seed being a seed klutz i asked sandra pella head gardener at the toronto botanical garden for advice on starting plants from seed the big question when to start think mid-march for heat-loving plants later or even directly in the ground for cool-weather types the basic basic mistake is planting the seeds too deeply sandra warned cover seeds with a layer of soil as thick as one-third of the seed s height tiny little seeds really only need to be pressed into the earth with a flat piece of wood or the flat bottom of a jar they should also have good contact with the soil she added so pressing them in firmly serves a second purpose seeds don t need a fancy home by the way do what sandra does use any clean 8 to 10 cm inch pots or even yogurt containers with holes in the bottom and be sure to put fresh clean soil in there to keep the green babies free of disease warm and bright keep seeds consistently moist but not wet was her next piece of advice to keep them from floating around when you water use a small watering can with a rose attached in gardening language a rose is that spray thing with holes that fits over the end of the spout a spray bottle also works heat and light were next on her list room temperature 18°-24° c is just fine light can be a little tougher a window with full sun is great but if you don t have that go for artificial lights if you do grow under lights be ready to raise them or lower the seeds as you go along a good distance is about 30 cm from the tops of the baby plants skip the fertilizer until the first true leaves appear sandra told me the very first pair are seed leaves and don t count use a very weak solution so the plants don t burn note to newbies fertilizer that s too strong gives plants the equivalent of diaper rash out they go with the little critters happily growing there s just one last step hardening off that s more garden talk for getting seedlings used to outdoor conditions three to five days in a cold frame should do it she said don t have a cold frame rig one from a shallow box covered with glass or clear heavy plastic or search the web for instructions after that you can plant the greenies in the garden just keep as much earth around their roots as possible when you take them out of their starter pots on the child side in defence of exhausted mothers everywhere i do not consider myself a vain woman i have wash and wear hair could never be described as a fashion di christine va nor do i have a lot of yerrill time energy or heck i ll admit it money for fancy makeup nails and the like with that said i occasionally walk by a mirror glance into it and wonder who is that poor exhausted middle aged woman then i sigh and realize it s me i remember a famous quote by my favourite columnist the late erma bombeck she once wrote seize the moment remember all those women on the titanic who waved off the dessert cart i live more by that motto than the it s better to look good than to feel good motto and i can prove it i have provided following a list of what our family did/accomplished/completed in one typical insanely busy week last year celebrated the rational one s birthday finished fifth in the hurdles `swam up to cubs ate dinner with 80 of our closest scouts canada friends and family voluntarily served barbecued burgers to 300 public school kids and their families at a school event re-sodded the grass hit a homerun helped a little old lady onto the streetcar got environmentally friendly and switched to the ttc and gave up environmentally friendly transportation when i loaded my kids into the minivan to drive across town to play three on three hockey we set up the spare bedroom for my mom s grandma s coming visit washed eight loads of laundry so my mother wouldn t think my life was out of control picked up mom from the airport in rush hour watched my youngest son score eight goals at three on three hockey picked up a pound of coffee at the new starbucks at 9:59 pm whew watched my eldest play three on three with kids who were old enough to be shaving and he did great got the tire on the minivan replaced set an appointment with the allergist delivered my son to a birthday party and took the other son shopping for `skinny jeans what are they we picked up groceries drove to the cottage cut up a tree that had landed on the cabin in a thunderstorm we went swimming went tubing went tubing again had a campfire went fishing unsuccessfully tried to teach the kids to water ski had a barbecue cleared stumps cleaned up the beach raked paths and taught our kids to drive a fishing boat watched a movie played a board game lost in poker completed a project on mesopotamia that i didn t even know he had to complete attended a hockey parents party dropped off mom with my sister donated time to the community centre coached a game of baseball went to the r.e.m concert tidied up the house looked at the calendar for next week hugged my kids a bunch of times kissed my husband a bunch of times and went to bed after learning she had a terminal illness erma bombeck wrote a great column titled if i had my life to live over most poignant on the list was i would have sat on the grass with my kids and worried less about grass stains i don t want to wish for a `do-over i ve earned every dark circle and wrinkle but that s not old age that s living and i m loving nearly every minute of it don s
